Photocopies of certificates, clippings, and photographs dated between 1957 and 1993 documenting the career of architect Harry Kirk McGee. Most items are photocopies of clippings about award of contracts or progress of construction on projects for which McGee was the architect. Most of the projects were in Johnston County, North Carolina, and a few were in neighboring counties. These included houses, shopping centers, hospitals, schools, and other public buildings. Harry Max Markowitz was born on August 24, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He received his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D.(1955) in economics from the University of Chicago with a thesis on the portfolio theory. Markowitz joined the RAND Corporation in 1952. Less

Harry Sheldon Welby, a consultant for pistachic culture for Standard Oil Company, from 1920 until at least 1952, was a graduate of the Biltmore Forest School. He was a member of the Northern Nut Growers Association, an organization seeking to develop better nut trees. The Harry Sheldon Welby Diaries and Photograph contains two diaries written by Harry S. Welby in 1910-1912 and one photograph of Harry S. Welby and Dr. Carl A. Schenck circa 1911-1912. The content of the diaries range from discussions between Mr. Welby and Dr. Schenck on topics covering the forest industry to Mr. Welby's research of various types of wood specimens. Less

The Harry Sweetbaum silk industry photographs, circa 1930-1941, consist of photographs of a silk plant in China, pictures of the silk making process, Japanese postcards of the Nishimura Filature, and photographs and a booklet from the AAA Silk Laboratory in New York City. Images are of workers, machinery, and some photographs of silkworms. Harry Sweetbaum, born in Odessa, Russia, emigrated to the United States in 1904. He grew up in New York City and received a degree in accounting from the City College of New York. He began his career as an accountant but while employed at a silk firm changed vocations and became an importer of raw silk from the 1920s to 1941. He worked for the Han Kow Silk Company which had facilities in Patterson, New Jersey, where the silk was thrown. His company used the AAA Laboratory in New York City to test silk. Sweetbaum strongly advocated the use of silk as opposed to synthetic fibers, but went out of business in 1941 due to the increase of silk imported from Japan. Less

Lyon Design Library. The collection is organized into four series: Architectural Works, Guidelines and Regulations, Publicity, and Design Competitions and Projects. Architectural works includes books, serials, brochures, essays, and other materials relating to buildings, projects, and other architectural works. Guidelines and regulations include books, serials, manuals, and other materials relating to architectural guidelines, regulations, and other specifications in various subject matters. Publicity material includes books, brochures, and other materials that publicize the lives and works of various architects and architectural firms. Design competitions and projects includes reports, manuals, and other publications relating to design competitions and projects. Few items relate to the School of Design. The dates of this collection range from 1939 to 1992; several items are undated. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University College of Design and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. Contained in these drawings are the original 1941 designs for the house at 2871 Rosedale Avenue in Raleigh and the plans for the 2002 renovation of the building. They were collected by Harvey Charlton, owner of the house in 2008. Harvey J. Charlton has been a professor of mathematics at North Carolina State University. Ross Edward Shumaker was an architect and a professor at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (1920-1955). He began the architecture program there, and he designed several buildings on campus. Owen F. Smith has been an architect based in Raleigh. The Harwell Hamilton Harris Architectural Drawings and Photographs consist of blueprints and architectural drawings including sketches that document residences located in North Carolina, Texas, and California. Included are also digitized oversized poster boards which do not exist in physical form and are only digitally available. Harwell Hamilton Harris (1903-1990) was born in Redlands, California. He apprenticed with the noted modernist architects Richard Neutra and Rudolf Schindler until 1933, at which time he established his own practice in Los Angeles. In 1943, he taught for one year at Columbia University before returning to California. From 1952 to 1955, he was the Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1962, he accepted a teaching position at North Carolina State University, where he remained until his retirement. Harris was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects (1965) and a recipient of the Richard Neutra Medal for Professional Excellence (1982) and is remembered for his influential modernist-style architectural works in California, Texas, and North Carolina. The Harris Lecture Series at North Carolina State University is named in his honor. Less

The Hayes-Howell and Associates Architectural Drawings are comprised of architectural drawings from the Hayes-Howell and Associates firm spanning from the 1950s to the 2000s. The bulk of the collection contains residential drawings, with some commercial and university buildings present. In the early 1950s, NC State alumnus Thomas Thurmon “Tommy” Hayes, Jr., and Calvin Howell formed the architectural firm Hayes-Howell Architects based in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The firm played a significant role in constructing the built environment of Southern Pines and surrounding areas, while designing and building residential and commercial buildings throughout North Carolina. The collection contains drawings for notable buildings in North Carolina, such as the North Carolina State Hospital and United Telephone Company of the Carolina offices. In the 1950s and 1960s, Hayes-Howell & Associates designed and renovated several buildings on NC State University’s campus, including the Weisiger-Brown General Athletics Facility and Married Student Housing (E.S. This collection contains material documenting the career of Hayne Palmour, North Carolina State University Professor Emeritus of Ceramic Engineering. Included are biographical files, general correspondence, manuscripts, patents, administrative files, and research material generated by Palmour over a period of nearly six decades, from 1948 to 2004. Hayne Palmour began his career at North Carolina State University in 1958, retiring in 1994. During his tenure at North Carolina State, Palmour was active as a researcher, educator, advisor, and administrator. Specific research interests included mechanisms of flow and fracture in spinel structured ceramics, materials processing and rate controlled sintering, and precision digital dilatometry. His focus was in the development of processes for the firing of complex ceramics. His involvement with the international scientific and technical research community and many contributions that he made to the field of advanced ceramics engineering, the defense industry, and the world of nuclear power are documented in the collection. The Heidi Prescott Papers contain legal files, lobbying materials, photos, VHS videotapes, cassette tapes, and other materials related to animal rights protection. The largest part of the collection includes materials created by the Fund for Animals (FFA), where Heidi Prescott served as the National Director. Heidi Prescott has been the Senior Vice President for Companion Animals at HSUS since 2021. She previously served as the Senior Vice President of Campaigns from 2005 through 2021. Prescott was the National Director of the Fund for Animals from 1989 to 2005 before this organization merged with the HSUS. Less

The Henry Brower Smith Papers consist of correspondence and related materials, 1970-1972, involving the Medical Plastics Corporation of America and the company's development and marketing of a line of products containing the controversial antibacterial agent hexachlorophene. Henry Brower Smith (1917-1992) was a chemical engineer from Durham, North Carolina. After a career that included positions as director of research at General Foods Corporation and vice president of Armour Grocery Products, he was a professor of chemical engineering, associate dean of engineering, and then vice provost and dean for research at North Carolina State University from 1965 to 1983. From 1970 to 1972, Smith was as a member of the board of directors of the Medical Plastics Corporation of America. Less

The Henry Eli Kendall papers consist of photographs of Kendall and childhood friends and memorabilia from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now North Carolina State University), including ribbons, correspondence, news clippings, registration cards, a grade report, and an athletic ticket book. Henry Eli Kendall Jr. (1905-1981) was an engineer, North Carolina state government official, director of the State Employees' Credit Union, and a World War II veteran. The Henry Emil Bonitz Papers contains copies of a 1948 letter from Bonitz's son, John H. Bonitz to J. W. Harrelson and Harrelson's reply. The collection also includes receipts for board at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), which Henry Emil Bonitz paid in 1889 and 1890. The Henry Knox McIntyre Papers, 1905-1913, consist of one diary, two household account books, and a bound notebook containing an inventory of household items with values, from a faculty member at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). Henry Knox McIntyre received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1899 from Columbia University. He joined the faculty of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as an Assistant Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering in 1910, and served in varying professorships through 1926. Henry Leveke Kamphoefner was dean of the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) School of Design, 1948-1973, and continued to teach architecture at North Carolina State University until 1979. Kamphoefner practiced architecture in Sioux City, Iowa, 1932-1936; was associate architect for the Rural Resettlement Administration in Washington, D.C., 1936-1937; and taught architecture at the University of Oklahoma, 1937-1948. The collection of letters and clippings may have originated from architect Brian Shawcroft, but was donated by George Smart and the North Carolina Modernist Houses. Less

The Henry Sanoff Papers contain student research project notebooks developed for a course where NC State University students attempted to create strategies for dealing with the planning problems unique to small rural communities. The Community Development Group, originally a course entitled "Model Cities Workshop," was created in 1969 to provide 5th year architecture students with a valuable real world collaborative experience. The students worked with local governmment, diverse rural populations and with the North Carolina Extension Service to develop plans and strategies of development for rural communities. The Senior Design Center (SDC) was created in 1994 to provide Computer Science seniors with a value-added capstone course resulting in a final project. The SDC provides an opportunity for companies to sponsor a particular project, resulting in a collaboration between students and private enterprise.Dr. Henry Sanoff, AIA, Distinguished Professor of Architecture at the School of Architecture at the College of Design, earned his B.A. in Architecture in 1957 and M.A. in Architecture in 1962 from the Pratt Institute in New York. He came to the NC State University School of Design in 1966. He taught courses relating to community participation, social architecture, design research, design methodology, and design programming. Sanoff has lectured around the world and in the United States at more than 85 institutions. He is widely published and has been a visiting scholar at a number of institutions around the world. Sanoff has also worked as an architectural consultant in the programming and design of children's centers. Less

The Herb Schaal Landscape Architecture Papers contain sketches, drawings, reports, photographs, digital media, and correspondence from Schaal's career as a landscape architect and principal at EDAW, now AECOM. The collection particularly highlights Schaal's work on large-scale children's gardens, public botanical gardens, planning and design for university campuses, and analysis and design for key infrastructure projects such as highways and energy sites and corridors. Herb Schaal, a native of the San Francisco Bay area in California, is founding principal of the Fort Collins office of Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and Williams (EDAW, now AECOM), a landscape architecture firm. Schaal received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona and his Master of Landscape Architecture from State University of New York at Syracuse. He worked in the North Carolina State University Department of Landscape Architecture under Richard Moore, then chair of the department and previously Schaal's professor at Cal Poly Pomona. Schaal's work has included urban design studies; site planning and design for corporate facilities and campuses; highway and corridor work; and re-vegetation of difficult sites and disturbed areas. His specialty is public gardens, including educational gardens for children and contemplative gardens for healthcare facilities. Dozens of Schaal's projects have been recognized for awards by the American Society of Landscape Architects, of which he is a Fellow. Less
