Included in this collection are his correspondence, notes, and minutes related to the classes he taught, conferences he attended, and committees of which he was a member. In addition to these materials, this collection includes newsletters, clippings, and articles he retained that were related to his work at NC State University and the background research he did while developing the Public History degree program. John David Smith has taught at Indiana University-Purdue University, the University of South Carolina, Southeast Missouri State University, and NC State University before accepting a position at UNC Charlotte. Prior to teaching, he graduated with both a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1973 and 1977 respectively. By the end of his NC State University career, which began in 1982, he rose through the ranks of the history department to graduate alumni distinguished professor of history and eventual director of the Master's in Public History program, specializing in the Civil War and the history of race relations in the United States.
