The D. J. Rose and Son Architectural Drawings and Project Files consist of architectural drawings, project files, blueprints, and other materials relating to the construction projects of D. J. Rose and Son. These materials date from approximately 1907 to 1970. The hundreds of rolls of architectural drawings include works by some of North Carolina's leading architects, such as Benton and Benton of Wilson, North Carolina, John C. Stout of Rocky Mount, NC, and Joseph F. Leitner of Wilmington, NC. The collection also contains materials relating to the business operations of D. J. Rose and Son, including bank statements, receipts, invoices, personal journals, and correspondences. David Jeptha Rose (1861-1940) was a lifelong builder who moved from Johnston County to Rocky Mount in 1890. Rose established D. J. Rose and Son which is the oldest continuously operating general contracting firm in North Carolina. Rose's sons, Ira Woodall Rose and Dillon Jeptha Rose, joined the firm in 1930. After Rose's death in 1940, Ira and Dillon led the opeations of the company. The company completed construction projects not only in Rocky Mount, but throughout the eastern United States. Among their construction projects were textile and tobacco mills, banks, courthouses, railroad stations, power plants, hospitals, churches, and many other commercial and residential buildings. They worked with clients such as Carolina Telephone and Telegram, Atlantic Coastline Railroad, financial institutions, and pharmaceutical companies. The year 2015 marked D. J. The Dale Blosser Collection on Synergetics, Inc. and Other Projects consists of architectural and structural drawings and related documentation on Synergetics, Inc. projects throughout the United States. Among the drawings and records are plans for structures in North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Georgia, and Louisiana.There are also booklets from the North Carolina Division of School Planning as well as brochures, notes, correspondence, and some photos. A major part of the collection is architectural and structural drawings of New York's World Fair, Electric Power & Light Exhibit, also called the Tower of Light. The collection includes some materials that were not produced by Synergetics, Inc. The collection dates from 1952 to 1981. Dale Blosser was born in Brussels, Belgium on October 3, 1927. In 1956, Blosser graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Architecture. Prior to North Carolina State College, he attended Clemson College (1945) and Carnegie Institute of Technology (1947-1949). He worked for Synergetics, Inc. from 1957 to 1963. The Dale E. Sayers papers document Sayers' career as a researcher and educator, from his work as an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley to his teaching and research career as a professor of physics at North Carolina State University. Sayers was a co-developer of the modern extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique, which, according to Sayers, "allows atomic structural information to be determined in complex systems." In addition to EXAFS, his research interests included x-ray absorption spectroscopy, amorphous materials, mammography technology, synchrotron radiation, and environmental science. Sayers' extensive planning work on the NC STAR Storage Ring Project (North Carolina Storage Rings for Advanced Research) is one of the main subjects documented here. Other research project files included in these papers are Joint Economic Development Initiative - Advanced Light Technologies (JEDI-ALT) and the Department of Defense's Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP). These research files also include information on Sayers involvement in projects with the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the Canadian Light Source (CLS), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems). Sayers was active professionally in and beyond N.C. State. He published more than 200 articles in journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Materials Research, Journal of Synchrotron Radiation, and Thin Solid Films. He was active in organizations such as International XAFS Society and the American Physical Society, was awarded a patent on his "Stable Silicide Electrical Contacts on Si" invention, presented invited talks and seminars at more than sixty national and international conferences, and served as a consultant for groups such as Mobil Research and Development. During his tenure at N.C. State, Sayers was involved in grant projects with institutions such as Exxon, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, Procter & Gamble, the United States Department of Agriculture, the United States Department of Energy, and the University of Connecticut. Included in this collection are papers from Sayers' colleague Rodney McCormick, also of the NC State Physics Department. Dale Edward Sayers began his studies at the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his bachelor's degree in physics. He continued his studies at the University of Washington, where he completed his master's and doctoral degrees in physics. Sayers was named assistant professor of physics at North Carolina State University in 1976, associate professor in 1979, and professor in 1984. This collection is comprised of 30 digital photographs (JPEG) taken by Cary, NC, based photographer Dan Jahn. The photographs are in color and depict the North Carolina Sate University Majorettes at football games. Brief descriptions of the images exist in accompanying README text files. Dan Jahn is a professional photographer based in Cary, North Carolina. In 2003 he became the photographer of the North Carolina State University Marching Band. Marching bands have existed at North Carolina State University since the 1890s, and they have had drum majorettes since at least the 1940s. Less

The Dan Sears Collection of Landscape Architecture and Greenways Projects, 1963-1999, documents the professional activities of landscape architect Dan Sears. The collection consists of proposals, project manuals, designs, development plans, and landscape architectural drawings created by Dan Sears and partnering architectural firms. Sears' projects include private residences, municipal buildings, public parks, and campuses. Sears Design Group was founded by Dan C.L. Sears, ASLA, in 1979. Over the years the firm has worked on projects largely in North Carolina but also in Georgia, Virginia, and even Wyoming. Sears Design Group has developed successful streetscapes for downtown areas as well as landscapes for private residences. In collaboration with Fitch Creations, Sears Design Group has provided landscape design and land use planning for the village of Fearrington in Chatham County, North Carolina. Dan C.L. Sears received the 2009 North Carolina Award from the North Carolina American Society of Landscape Architects at its meeting in 2009. Sears also worked with landscape architect Richard C. Bell; as a result, some of the same projects can be found in the Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Material. Less

The Dan U. Gerstel Papers contains numerous scientific publications on a variety of topics related to the study of genetics, cytology, plant pathology, and crop science, collected by Dan U. Gerstel during his career as a member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State University and in the genetics department of the Weizmann Institute of Science (Mekhon Vaitsman le-mada) in Rehovot, Israel. The material is international in scope and covers a period of six decades. In addition to scientific publications, the collection contains personal and professional correspondence, a diary, genealogical research materials, newspaper clippings, and articles related to stamp collecting. Cytogeneticist Dan U. Gerstel, Ph.D., served as a professor of crop science at North Carolina State University, 1950-1980. He specialized in the study of tobacco and cotton. Less

The Dana Latch Papers contains items relating to Latch's career as Associate Professor of Mathematics at North Carolina State University, in the Department of Mathematics. The materials include teaching materials, departmental correspondence, annual faculty reports, and seminar abstracts. While the majority of the materials document Latch's teaching career, reports reflect her expansive research relating to mathematics, 1989-1994. Dana May Latch received her B.A. at Harpur College, State University of New York (SUNY) in 1965, her M.A. in Mathematics at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY) in 1967, and her Ph.D. in Mathematics at City University of New York (CUNY), Graduate School in 1971. Latch served as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Rutgers University, Lawrence University and North Carolina State University. Her professional career also included positions as Professor of Computer Science and Program Director in Theoretical Computer Science. Her career included instructional innovations, papers published in refereed journals, grants, and seminar talks. Less

The Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859 - 1924) Papers, 1883 - 1955, contain items relating to Hill's career at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as an English professor, Vice President, and President. Many of the materials document Hill's professional career, particularly his appointment to and resignation from the presidency of the College. There are also manuscript drafts of texts Hill wrote on the Civil War and on his father, General Daniel Harvey Hill. A small number of personal materials are also included. The bulk of the materials dates from 1908 to early 1920s. Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859-1924) was an educator, college president, writer, and historian. He received a B.A., M.A. and Doctor of Literature degree from Davidson College. In 1908 he became the third president of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, where he served from 1908 to 1916. The D. H. Hill Library on the NC State campus was named for him. Less

The Daniel William Greenlee Journals document the life of a plantation owner in western North Carolina during the Reconstruction era and into the post-Reconstruction era. The journals span January 1st, 1874-March 23rd, 1891 with two gaps in coverage: January 6th, 1881-April 26th 1883 and April 13th 1884-February 15th 1885. His journals comment chiefly on the weather, a variety of farming and business activities, social visits to neighbors and relatives, and his personal and religious thoughts. Daniel William Greenlee resided on the family's Burke County (present-day McDowell County) plantation, called Turkey Cove, in close proximity to his father, brother, sister, and aunt. He raised a variety of crops, such as wheat and corn, as well as hogs and cattle. Less

Dr. David A. Jessup is a wildlife veterinarian who earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology at the University of Washington in 1971. After receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Washington State University veterinary school in 1976 and spending ten months in a pathology residency at the University of California-Davis, he was hired by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) as its first wildlife veterinarian. He served CDFG in various capacities for more than 33 years, the last 15 in Santa Cruz, California, as Senior Wildlife Veterinarian and Supervisor of the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center. During his career he took time out to earn a Master's degree in Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at U.C. Davis and get Board certified in Zoological Medicine. He retired from CDFG in November 2010 and was hired as the Executive Manager of the Wildlife Disease Association (WDA), an international non-profit scientific organization. The David A. Jessup Papers contain materials collected by David A. Jessup including oil spill response workbooks, materials from the Oiled Wildlife Care Network, manuals for rehabilitating oiled wildlife, laboratoring manuals, documents about the California-Nevada Section and related records. The papers of David A. Young, professor of entomology at North Carolina State University, contain mostly correspondence with other scientists and organizations about David Young’s research and information requests (some in German, Spanish and French). Also included are plans of graduate work for graduate students and a drawing of a Cicadellinae. Papers date from 1950 to 1983. David A. Young, Jr. (May 26, 1915 - June 8, 1991) was a professor of entomology at North Carolina State University. Young received a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Kansas in 1950. He served as insect taxonomist at the United States National Museum in Washington, D.C., before joining the faculty at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1957. Young taught courses in insect morphology, taxonomy, and systematics. He was known for being a leafhopper specialist. Through trips to Peru, California, and Europe, Young added thousands of specimens to the North Carolina State University Insect Collection. Young officially retired from North Carolina State University in 1980, but continued as professor emeritus until 1986. He was a fellow at the Washington Academy of Science, as well as a member of numerous entomological societies. Less

The David Alexander Lockmiller papers consists of newsclippings and correspondence relating to Lockmiller's History of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering of the University of North Carolina, 1889-1939, and the University's 50th and 60th anniversary commemorations. Also included is a copy of R. C. Lawrence's review of Lockmiller's book, as well as a copy of the 1959 Founder's Day address. The majority of the materials are from 1939. David A. Lockmiller (1906 - 2005) received B.Ph. (1929) and A.M. (1928) degrees from Emory University, an LL.B. from Cumberland University (1929), a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina (1935), and an LL.D. from Cumberland University (1940). He joined the North Carolina State College faculty in 1935 as an instructor in History and Political Science. From 1940 to 1942, he served as department head. From 1942 to 1959, Lockmiller was the president of the University of Chattanooga. He then served as the president of Ohio Wesleyan University from 1959 to 1961. Lockmiller's publications include History of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering of the University of North Carolina, 1889-1939 and The Consolidation of the University of North Carolina. The David C. Fischetti Papers, 1962-2011, document the professional career of David Fischetti and the work of his professional engineering firm, DCF Engineering, Inc. This collection is arranged in three series: drawings, project files, and professional files. The collection consists primarily of architectural drawings and paperwork associated with client projects and Fischetti’s professional development. The projects include covered bridges, historic structures, parks, university campuses, churches, civic facilities, and a few residences. Also included are book and presentation drafts, conference ephemera, photographs, and testimony given by Fischetti in several lawsuits. Geographically, the project files represent projects located primarily, though not exclusively, throughout the eastern seaboard. David Carmichael Fischetti (1946-2011) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Clemson University in 1969. In 1975, Fischetti opened his own firm, DCF Engineering, Inc., in Cary, North Carolina, which he operated until his death. He was registered as a Professional Engineer in nineteen states. Fischetti’s engineering projects often focused on historic structures, including covered bridges, churches, and historic properties. His best known project in North Carolina was the twenty-year-long effort to relocate the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, for which he was the engineer of record. For his preservation work, Fischetti was lauded with scores of awards from various state preservation societies and national professional associations.Fischetti was an active member of state- and national- level professional engineering and historic preservation associations. He gave numerous conference presentations, published scholarly papers, and taught several courses. He was a Professional Fellow of the Historic Resources Imaging Laboratory, School of Architecture at Texas A&M University and received the Orthogonal Medal from the faculty of Graphic Communications at North Carolina State University in 2000. In 2009, Fischetti published a textbook, “Structural Investigation of Historic Buildings.” Fischetti died in March of 2011. Less

Contained in this collection are agricultural publications (ca. 1920 - ca. 1960); pamphlets, brochures, and flyers for agricultural equipment and other agricultural information (ca. 1920 - ca. 1960); and correspondence, other papers, and memorabilia of David C. and Edgar W. Worth (1916 - 1990). This collection formerly contained publications, brochures, etc. produced by NC State College/University (1920s – 1980s) but these have been moved to the University Archives. Brothers David Crenshaw and Edgar Wilson Worth graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later NC State University), the former with a B.S. in Agriculture (1927) and M.S. in Animal Husbandry (1930) and the latter with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. David was the owner/operator of Oakhurt Dairy Farm in Wake County, NC, from 1927-1956. He was a prominent member of various dairy organzations in North Carolina. Less

The collection includes both David H. Howells' writings and his photographic work, with photography making up the bulk of the collection. This collection is divided into two series. The first series, Environmental Research Papers, is comprised primarily of Howells' writings, both published and unpublished. Topics include water quality management and planning, sediment pollution control, water pollution from toxics, ground water management, and water pollution from agriculture. The second series, Photography, includes negatives, prints, slides taken of black-and-white prints on display, and color slides. Information on Howells' participation in photography exhibits is also included, as well as some examples of published photographs. The subject matter of the photographs varies greatly, but there is a strong emphasis on water and the natural world. There are also photographic portraits of more than thirty people. David H. Howells was the first director of the Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) of the University of North Carolina system. During his tenure at WRRI, Howells also served as Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State University and Professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. In addition to his work within the state, Howells served on several national and international water program evaluation commissions. He received numerous honors for his contributions to water pollution control, including the U.S. Public Health Service Commendation Medal and a Presidential Citation. Howells was also well known for his considerable skills as a black-and-white photographer, his water photos were often featured in WRRI publications. Less

The David Hill Oral Histories of George Matsumoto is a collection of oral histories conducted by NC State School of Architecture Dean David Hill with George Matsumoto in 2009. During the oral histories, Matsumoto discusses his early life, living in an internment camp, studying at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, and his architecture and teaching career in North Carolina and California. The oral histories discussing Matsumoto’s career in North Carolina and California have been redacted to protect the privacy of the interviewee. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese-American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. At the time of the interview, David Hill, AIA, was an Associate Professor of Architecture and Co-Director of the Coastal Dynamics Design Lab at the NC State University College of Design where he taught full-time since 2007. As of 2017, David Hill is the Dean of the College of Design. While at NC State, Hill has led graduate and undergraduate design studios, digital representation courses, and seminars that focus on integrative digital simulation processes, architectural prototypes, and design strategies for coastal regions. The David Lose Landscape Architecture Papers consists of project files and project plans for several of David Lose's landscape architecture projects dating from 2005 to 2015. These projects are located throughout the Southeastern United States, including Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. The collection also contains a binder on Lose's career and career highlights. David Lose, FASLA, was the founder and President Emeritus of the Nashville-based firm Lose & Associates. Lose is known for his planning and implementation of public parks, greenways, and recreational areas. In 1968, he graduated from NC State's College of Design with a B.A. in Landscape Architecture. One of his more notable projects was the 125,000 acre Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area located on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. Other projects include Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky and Tennessee, and the Gateway Trail greenway system in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Lose was elected Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in 1992, received many ASLA Excellence Awards, was a past chair of the National Recreation and Park Association Board of Trustees and also the Tennessee State Board of Architects, Engineers and Interior Designers. Lose retired in 2008 and sold his firm to four of his associates. He died in June 2017. Less
