The Frederick Schenck Barkalow Papers include materials related to Barkalow's career, research, and service in environmental and conservation organizations. The papers include correspondence, materials on environmental issues, organizational materials, teaching materials, photographs, published material, and Barkalow's extensive research into the gray squirrel. Frederick Schenck Barkalow Jr. (1914-1982) served as a professor of zoology at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1947 to 1979. The Frederick Siler Sloan Papers consist of course outlines and notes on Agricultural Extension classes at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) during Sloan's tenure as senior staff member of that department, 1950-1962. Frederick Siler Sloan (1907-1983) received his B.A. in Horticulture from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1928. He served as an agricultural official and professor at North Carolina State's Agricultural Extension Service from 1928 to 1969. He also served as North Carolina State College contact officer for foreign visitors. In this capacity he helped arrange programs for about 4,000 students and visitors from 135 countries. Less

The Fund For Animals Records includes mainly press clippings about hunting, trapping, shooting, legal testimonies and court opinions, and animal rights. Also included are files about hunting policies in various states. The Fund for Animals, an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States, is an animal protection organization dedicated to ending cruel practices toward animals, caring for animals in crisis through rehabilitation centers, and participating in building a stronger global animal welfare movement. Some of their campaigns include ending trophy hunting, animal lab testing, and animal fighting. They support improving the lives of farm animals, humane eating, and advocating for captive wild animals, among other issues. Less

This collection includes two scrapbooks that contain photographs, newspaper clippings and letters from the Future Farmers of America Coats Chapter, Coats High School, Coats, North Carolina, documenting the organization from 1959 to 1962. The scrapbooks were created during the time when Murry O. Phillips taught vocational agriculture at Coats High School and contain letters to Phillips from business and civic leaders and from his state department of public instruction supervisors as well as other items documenting Phillips's life and career, especially his work with the Future Farmers of America organization. Future Farmers of America, later known as the National FFA Organization, was founded in 1928. The organization brings together students, teachers and agribusiness to solidify support for agricultural education in middle and high schools where members are engaged in a wide range of curriculum and FFA activities leading to career opportunities in agriculture. There was an active chapter of Future Farmers of America in at Coats High School in Harnett County, North Carolina, during the time when Murry O. Phillips taught vocational agriculture there. Less

This collection contains a notebook used by the college student G. M. Sloan for a lab for a course in textile dyes. The item dates from approximately 1915. G. M. (Graham Munroe) Sloan was a textile student at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), from approximately 1915 to approximately 1919. He grew up in Swannanoa, North Carolina, and served in the military during World War I. Later, he may have worked at Beacon Manufacturing. Less

The G. Milton Small Papers contain architectural drawings and photographs of projects and structures designed by architect G. Milton Small between 1950 and 1981. The collection primarily consists of architectural drawings of Small's designs, many of which were constructed on the North Carolina State University campus and elsewhere in the Raleigh, North Carolina, region. The collection also contains photographs taken by architectural photographers Joseph Molitor and Holland Wright, as well as Small's writings on computerized parking systems. Two additional series were added in 2015, which include project files and specifications for some projects as well as catalogs and related materials from architectural firms. Milton Small Jr. (1916-1992) was a student of Mies van der Rohe and was one of the foremost modernist architects working in the southeastern United States in the later half of the 20th century. Small was born in Collinsville, Oklahoma. He graduated with a bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and a masters from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied under Mies van der Rohe. In Chicago he worked for the firms Perkins and Will, and Hudgins Thompson and Ball. Small relocated to North Carolina in 1948 to head the architectural office of William Henley Deitrick, at that time Raleigh's largest architectural firm and the most committed to modernist design. Small was recommended for the position by a former professor at the University of Oklahoma, Henry Kamphoefner, who was himself relocating to Raleigh to take over the deanship of North Carolina State University's new School of Design. Small headed Deitrick's office for two years, during which time he produced several important modernist designs, principally, a new clubhouse for the Carolina Country Club, which was the subject of a Life magazine article, "New Country Club" (31 July 1950. p. 70). Small started his own practice, G. Milton Small Architects, in 1949. His first design was a residence which was constructed in 1950 for Raleigh businessman Robert I. Rothstein. Less

This compilation volume includes an outline for a course on agricultural economics, a series of lecture outlines for the course, and an imcomplete three-page typescript of "The Theory of the Lest Cost Combination," all by G. W. Forster, as well as a typed copy of "Standards of Production in Agriculture" by Arthur W. Ashby, originally published in the Edinburgh Review, January 1922. G. W. (Garnet Wolsey) Forster (1887 - 1961) founded the Department of Agricultural Economics at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1923 and served as its head until 1950. He earned his bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1914, his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1917, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1923. Before coming to N.C. State, Forster was a professor of Agriculture and Economics at the University of Kentucky from 1919 to 1920, assistant chief of Farm Management and Farm Economics, United States Department of Agriculture from 1920 until 1921, and acting chief of the same department from 1922 to 1923. In 1957, he received the "Distinguished Fellow" award from the American Farm Economics Association for being one of the ten outstanding farm economists in the United States. Less

The G. Will Armfield Architectural Blueprints for the Harden Thomas Martin House, 1908-1909, consists of seven blueprints of this home. This Greensboro home located on 204 N. Mendenhall Street is a frame, two-and-a-half story Colonial Revival residence with a hip roof. This house was nominated to be on the National Register of Historic Places. G. Will (George Williamson) Armfield (1849-1927) was a Greensboro architect and contractor who turned to full-time architecture and building in the late 1890s or 1900s. His best known work is the Alumni Hall (1914) at the Oak Ridge Institute in the village of Oak Ridge in Guilford County. Less

The GE Nuclear Energy Standard Safety Analysis Reports Collection, 1994, contains large oversized books documenting standard safety analyses of nuclear power plants. The reports consist mostly of diagrams of various buildings and nuclear systems. Two of the six volumes in the collection are unbound. GE built its first Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR), a Generation III boiling water reactor, at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Japan in 1992 and 1993, however approval had not yet been granted for energy contracts in the United States. The work detailed in these volumes eventually allowed GE to get their final design for the Advanced Boiling Water Reactor approved by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 1997. Less

This collection of oral histories contains audiocassette tapes, 2003-2004, of interviews with GI Bill veterans who attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). The interviewees were twelve servicemen and -women who were in the armed forces during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War eras, and later. The interviews cover the subjects' military service, educational experiences, GI Bill benefits, and professional careers. Also included for some interviews are tape logs--typed partial transcripts with abridged or paraphrased questions and answers, along with tape counter numbers. Interviews were conducted by Anna Dahlstein, NC State University Libraries Fellow, and Robert Serow, Professor, Education Research, College of Education, North Carolina State University. The interviews in the GI Bill Oral Histories were conducted in conjunction with Transforming Society: The GI Bill Experience at NC State, an exhibit prepared by the North Carolina State University Libraries to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the original GI Bill of Rights, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, and to honor those whom the legislation and its subsequent reenactments enabled to attend the university. The files that comprise this collection once made up Gary Mock's website devoted to the history of textile mills, people and companies in the United States, chiefly in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. That website's URL http://textileshistory.org/ is no longer active. The digital files that comprised Dr. Mock's website were transferred to the NC State University Libraries by the Wilson College of Textiles in 2019. The Wilson College of Textiles took over Dr. Mock's content a few years ago, modified it considerably, added to it, and now hosts it on their website at https://sites.textiles.ncsu.edu/history/. NC State University Libraries captures that website quarterly as part of NC State University Web Sites Web Archive. Gary N. The Gaston Vance Jones Photograph of the North Carolina State College Thalerian German Club includes an original photograph that was reproduced on page 220 of the 1918 Agromeck. Gaston Vance Jones was a student at North Carolina State College (now University) from 1918 until about 1920. He was in Leazar Literary Society, Pi Kappa Alpha, Tompkins Textile Society, and the Thalerian (also spelled Thalarian) German Club pictured in the photograph. Jones was from Newark, New Jersey. This collection contains black-and-white photographic prints depicting the North Carolina State College (later University) School (later College) of Textiles. Represented in the photographs are faculty, students, and equipment, as well as lab facilities in Nelson Hall and David Clark Labs. Most images are undated, but all appear to have been created during the 1950s and early 1960s. Likewise, there is little information on the photographers, but all appear to have been created by photographers employed or contracted by the college. Floyd probably collected these images when he was employed at the college. During the 1950s and 1960s, Gene G. The Geoffrey Duart McLean Landscape Architecture Photographs and Drawings includes digital files that are scans of original drawings, photographic prints, and slides. The scans were done in 2012; the original photographs date from 1963-circa 1990. These images show McLean's projects on the North Carolina State University campus and Raleigh's Eastgate Park. McLean's work for landscape architect Lewis Clarke and architect A. G. Odell is also included. Additional unprocessed materials (drawings, slides, etc.) have also been added that document McLean's landscape architecture projects. Geoffrey McLean graduated from the North Carolina State University School of Design in 1969 with a degree in landscape architecture. He studied under noted landscape architect Lewis Clarke. His firm, Geoffrey McLean & Company, commenced business in 1971. In addition to being a licensed landscape architect, McLean is also a professional engineer. He has been a member of the Wake County Planning Board and Board of Supervisors for the Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects from 1979 to 1981. Less

The George A. Gullette Papers contain documents from the beginning and end of the NC State career of this social studies professor. There is correspondence from 1947 regarding the college's interest in hiring Gullette to commence its social studies program (beginning with a contemporary civilization course modeled on one at Columbia University). Gullette's responses give insight into salary negotiations of the time period. A Lecture Given by the Late George A. Gullette To a Class in Social Studies is a printed version of a talk Gullette gave at North Carolina State University on January 13, 1969. The title Gullette gave this lecture is Prospects for the Future--The Next Twenty-Five Years. On March 19, 1970, the Friends of the Library distributed copies of the lecture at its annual banquet. In addition, portions of the lecture were read at Gullette's memorial service. George Albert Gullette (1909 - 1969) was the founder and head of the Social Studies Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (after 1965, North Carolina State University) from 1947 to 1969. He received his B.A. in English literature from Harvard University in 1933, his M.A. from Vanderbilt University in 1934, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1944. Before coming to NC State, Gullette taught at the University of Toledo (1936-1946) and Lincoln College (1946-1947). Less

George Franklin Hackney (1905-1997) graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in Architectural Engineering in 1927 and opened an architectural firm in Durham, North Carolina, focusing on high end residences. He later taught at Duke University. He initially partnered with Charles Knott, and later continued his practice as Sears, Hackney, Keener, and Williams. This collection is comprised of specifications for the F. G. Hall Residence in Durham, North Carolina, 1939, designed by George F. Hackney, Architect. Less
