This collection contains notebooks created by James V. Pomeroy. Included are pattern samples, textile samples, and instructional illustrations from Pomeroy's time at the Philadelphia Textile School. While the materials span the time period 1898 to 1901, most documents date from 1899 to 1900. Topics covered include textiles, textile fabrics and machinery, carding, spinning, and weaving. James Voorhees Pomeroy entered into the Philadelphia Textile School (established 1884) in 1899 as part of the First Year Regular Day Class. Pomeroy received honorable mentions for the Silver Medal for General Excellence and for the Bronze Medal for Best Results in Color Harmony and Figured Design in 1899. In 1900, upon entering into the Second Year Day Class, Pomeroy was awarded the Prize Scholarship for the 1900-1901 school year. On June 6, 1901, he received his diploma from the textile school. Represented in the photographs are faculty, students, and equipment, as well as lab facilities in Nelson Hall and David Clark Labs. Most images are undated, but all appear to have been created during the 1950s and early 1960s. Likewise, there is little information on the photographers, but all appear to have been created by photographers employed or contracted by the college. This collection contains pages from a notebook for classes Textiles 341 and 342, Fabric Design and Analysis, taught by J.A. Porter. The notebook includes fabric samples, design sheets with drawn and colored weaving designs, and fabric analysis sheets containing numerical analysis of fabric. It also includes laboratory reports, dated October and November 1950, submitted by Paul L. Cabrey. Paul L. Cabrey of Nabertha, Pa., was a student in the School of Textiles, North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering. Textiles 341 and 342, Fabric Design and Analysis, was a course required of juniors in textile manufacturing. The course covered construction of fancy weaves, fabrics backed with warp or filling, fabrics ornamented with extra warp or extra filling, regular and fancy piques, and methods of producing new designs. Students learned to analyze samples of fancy fabrics for design, drawing-in draft, reed plan and chain plan and to calculate how to reproduce fabrics when only a small sample was available. Less

The Extension office offers continuing education opportunities to industry partners. The Applied Research program sponsors research projects to supplement education and encourage participation in industrial research and development. This is an artificial collection and is maintained by Special Collections staff. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931 the College greatly reworked its curricula as it underwent consolidation. Along with North Carolina College for Women and the University of North Carolina, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina,. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system, having received university status, and, after some controversy, assumed its current name in 1965. The materials date from 1896 to 2007. As of 2013, the Office of Public Affairs consisted of three divisions: Communications Services, News Services, and Web Communications. The News Services division uses a wide variety of methods to promote NC State University on local, national, and international levels. Staff members utilize traditional press releases, news tips, and direct contact with journalists to give the university, its scholarship and its research more visibility. The Student Media Authority at North Carolina State University oversees creation of campus student publications at North Carolina State University, which include a yearbook, a daily newspaper, literary magazine, and African American student newspaper. It also oversees the student radio station, WKNC, and student television station, Wolf TV. The Publications Board was formed at North Carolina State College in or before 1933 to oversee creation of student publications. By 1937, it included representatives from student publications such as the Agromeck, Technician, Wataugan, Southern Engineer, and Agriculturist. By the late 1940s, it also included representatives from the student radio station WVWP. In the following decades, the organization continued to oversee the finances and leadership of student publications at North Carolina State University. This collection contains blueprints, drawings, notes, sketches, memoranda, surveys, master plans, and photographic slides, prints, and negatives relating to projects and initiatives undertaken by the Office of Campus Planning and Strategic Investment (formerly the Office of the University Architect). The majority of materials correspond to Edwin F. Harris’s tenure as Campus Planning Consultant, beginning in 1966, and later as director of Facilities Planning Division, a title which eventually became University Architect. However, the collection includes materials that pre-date Harris, as well as more recent additions to the collection. The University Archives contains architectural plans, drawings, and other materials for university buildings; however, federal and state law restricts access to certain types of documents in these categories. The Special Collections Research Center of the NC State University Libraries will handle access requests for those materials on a case-by-case basis, with the intention of providing as much access as possible to researchers.
