North Carolina State University, Office of the Chancellor, Larry King Monteith Records 1989-1998

The Chancellor is the chief administrative and executive officer, leader and spokesperson of North Carolina State University. The Chancellor, who has complete executive authority for the university, subject to the direction of the president and the board of trustees, defines the scope and authority of faculties, councils, committees, and officers of North Carolina State University, is a member of all faculties and other academic bodies of the university, and has the right to preside over the deliberations of the legislative bodies of the faculties of the institution. The Office of the Chancellor retains authority in faculty and EPA personnel, student matters, contracts, leases, and other agreements, and the acquisition and disposition of property.

The title of the head of North Carolina State University has changed over time. First the university was led by a president (1889-1934), then a vice president of the Consolidated University (1934), then a dean of Administration (1934-1945), and finally a chancellor (1945-present).

Larry King Monteith was born in 1933 in Bryson City, North Carolina. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State College in 1960 and 1962, respectively. Monteith went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1965. In 1966, Monteith returned to NC State to join the faculty as a professor of electrical engineering, and headed the Department of Electrical Engineering from 1974 to 1978. He later served as Dean of the College of Engineering from 1978 to 1989.

In 1989, Monteith became Interim Chancellor, and in 1990, the UNC Board of Governors selected him as permanent Chancellor, a position he held until 1998. During his tenure, the Division of Undergraduate Studies and the First Year Experience Program began, and the College of Management was established.

During Monteith's tenure, enrollment reached a new high, and the College of Textiles was relocated to Centennial Campus. NC State received nationwide recognition and assumed a prominent role in research and education, partly as a result of research grants and fellowships. Some other accomplishments include the establishment of the university's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the expansion of Centennial Campus and the construction of the Engineering Graduate Research Center (later named the Monteith Engineering Research Center). In 1995, the NCAA reinstated full certification for the NC State Athletics Program.

Topics include the relocation of the College of Textiles to Centennial campus and increased enrollment . Many centers were created to strengthen programs of research and instruction. Several construction projects and multiple renovations were finished during the time period of these records. In 1995, construction began on the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Center (later RBC Center), home of the NC State University basketball team. Enrollment for African American students increased, partly as a result of the Minority Presence Grant Program.
