The Calada News Gathering Services Collection of Video Recordings and Other Material Relating to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, includes National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) publications, photographs, and video recordings related to a variety of projects and missions. Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and Space Shuttle missions are all represented. Related materials from NASA contractors are also included in the collection. Photographs depict space craft and crew members, as well as images from space. The majority of the videos contain press conferences, mission highlights, or television programs. Many of the titles in the collection are represented in more than one format. Calada News Gathering Services was located in Houston, Texas, and moved to New Bern, North Carolina, in 1996. Materials are dated from 1982 to 2007. Ben Jennings was associate professor at Virginia Highlands Community College where he taught film appreciation and American literature. He was also served on the Arts Advisory Committee. This committee was charged with advising the vice president of Instruction and Student Services and the dean of the Division of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, regarding matters pertaining to Virginia Highlands Community College's curricular and non-curricular programs and offerings in theater, music, films, literature, dance and visual arts. Robert Cooke Papers contain a 1959 campaign button from Bob Cooke's campaign for student government vice president at NC State College, a 2013 video recording of an oral history interview in which Cooke recalls his life and career, and a 2017 listing of Cooke's publications and unpublished manuscripts and papers, and the Preface to the Directory of The Internet-First University Press, with cover letter, 2019. There are also historical materials compiled in 2022 on the occasion of Student Governments' Centennial. James Robert "Bob" Cooke served as vice president (1959-1960) and president (1960-1961) of Student Government at NC State College. He was active in numerous campus organizations such as Alpha Zeta, the College Union, and the Rules Committee. He graduated from NC State in 1961. In 1966 he began teaching at Cornell University. The Reginald D. Tillson Landscape Architecture Papers contains drawings, sketches, specifications, correspondence, notes, plant guides, and other materials that document the landscape design work of Tillson from the 1920s to the 1970s. The collection also contains an oral history interview of his son, David Tillson, in 2016. These materials encompass Tillson's work as a landscape architect, creating designs for small-scale residential locations, large-scale private subdivision, public parks, public housing projects, schools, churches, and hospitals. The collection represents Tillson's work throughout the southeastern United States, with the majority of the projects based in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region. The earlier materials from 1906 to 1928 demonstrate Tillson's beginnings in landscape architecture while gaining knowledge and experience in the field. The bulk of the collection covers Tillson's career as a practicing landscape architect between 1928 and 1969. The collection ranges from 1906 to 2016. Reginald D. Tillson was a landscape architect in High Point, North Carolina, who designed significant improvements to the built environment of High Point and other communities of the Piedmont Triad area. His early career focused on residential design work for the wealthy and upper-middle-class residents of High Point, which at the time was a prosperous center of the textile and furniture industries. In the 1950s and following decades, as North Carolina's population grew and planning and development trends evolved, Tillson's work grew in scale and complexity. He designed dozens of subdivisions and grounds for schools, churches, and hospitals. Overall, his career provides a unique view into planning and landscape architecture practice in the Southeast during decades of immense technological and social change. Less

The Alvin Marcus Fountain Papers, 1889-2002, contain records relating to Fountain's career at North Carolina State College (later University) as a student, faculty member, and alumnus. Although a majority of the documents relate to the university, the papers also include records describing Fountain's community involvement. A small number of the documents concern Fountain's wife Maxine and other family members. Alvin Marcus Fountain (1900-1989), was an educator, technical writer, author, and statistician. He was a member of the English faculty at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), 1925-1965, and developed courses in technical writing and public speaking for engineering students. The James B. Hunt Papers, 1945, 1953-2018 include videotapes, films, compact discs, audiotapes, photographs, correspondence, speeches, news clippings, ad slicks, position papers, advertisement scripts, cue sheets, stickers, buttons, artifacts, and brochures relating to the personal life and political campaigns of James Baxter Hunt Jr., who was a Democratic lieutenant governor, 1973-1976, and four-term governor of North Carolina, 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. The largest portion of the collection is manuscripts, which feature debates, speeches, correspondences, advertisements and personal notes. The bulk of the materials include Hunt’s 1976 and 1980 gubernatorial campaigns, his unsuccessful 1984 bid to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United State Senator from North Carolina, and his 1992 and 1996 gubernatorial campaigns. Also included are materials documenting Hunt’s acts post-governorship, including the establishment of the Smart Start program, the Institute for Emerging Issues, and The Hunt Institute. Not included are any materials specifically documenting Hunt’s official acts as governor. James Baxter Hunt, Jr. (1937- ) was the Democratic governor of North Carolina from 1977 to 1985 and 1993 to 2001. After serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1973 to 1977, he served two terms as Governor, from 1977 to 1981 and 1981 to 1985. In 1984 he waged an unsuccessful campaign to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United States Senator from North Carolina. The closely contested race, which Helms eventually won with 52% of the vote, garnered national attention as both sides engaged in negative campaigning. The campaign ultimately cost a combined $22 million, making it the most expensive Senate race in American history to that point. Hunt returned to elected office in 1993, winning a third term as Governor by defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor James C. Gardner. In 1996, he was elected to a fourth term over Republican state Representative Robin Hayes. Hunt left the office of the governor in 2001. Less

The Doris Elizabeth King Papers (1950-2014) contain 124.5 linear feet of correspondence, photographs, publications, article drafts, notecards, news clippings, photocopies, course files, and audiotapes. Most of these materials document King's research on the history of the American hotel and motel industry. This includes hotel/motel directories from the 1960s and 1970s and reel-to-reel audiotapes of King's interviews (1960s) with industry leaders. There are also files from King's service on North Carolina State University's Committee on Institutional History and Commemoration (1980s-1990s). There are a few personal files in this collection. King's research on Mary Yarbrough and the naming of Mary Yarbrough Court on the NC State University campus exist in the Mary Yarbrough Papers. Doris Elizabeth King (1925-2015) was a longtime professor of history at North Carolina State University. Born in Cairo, Georgia, she graduated (1945) as valedictorian of Georgia State Women's College at Valdosta. She later attended Duke University, where she earned M.A. (1947) and Ph.D. (1952) in history, and she was one of the first women awarded a scholarship for Ph.D. studies at Duke. She taught at Campbell College, Stephen F. Austin State College, and Wesleyan College from 1951 to 1962. She was the official historian of the American Hotel and Motel Association from 1962 to 1966. She joined the NC State University faculty in 1966 and remained until retirement in 1991. Her research focused on the history of the American hotel and motel industry. King was a friend of Mary Yarbrough, one of the first women to earn a degree from NC State, and she played an instrumental role in the naming of Mary Yarbrough Court on the university's campus. Less

The Animal Rights Network Records contains correspondence, office files, reports, clippings, publications, mailings, and audiovisual resources documenting the activities of the Animal Rights Network in advocating for the ethical and humane treatment of animals. Issues addressed by the organization include live animal experimentation, exploitation of animals for sport and entertainment, intensive breeding and slaughter of domestic animals for food, and irresponsible pet ownership. The Animal Rights Network (ARN) published a bimonthly magazine, The Animals' Agenda, which contained original content and also served to assist smaller animal rights organizations network with members of the animal rights community, as well as maintained a library and archives component. ARN encouraged its members to collect and maintain their own collections documenting the animal rights and animal welfare movements, and many members donated their collections to ARN. The bulk of the material dates from the 1950s to 1990s. In 1979, several Connecticut-based animal rights activists withdrew from Friends of Animals, Inc., to found the Animal Rights Network (ARN). ARN joined forces with the animal rights magazine Agenda, and together they worked to unite local, national, and international animal rights groups to achieve common goals. ARN's main objectives incorporated the central issues confronting the animal rights movement. These objectives included live animal experimentation, exploitation of animals for sport and entertainment, intensive breeding and slaughter of domestic animals for food, and irresponsible pet ownership. The group used its financial resources to develop advertising campaigns and publications in order to educate the public about animal rights issues. In 2001, the board of directors determined that the role of ARN as a movement building and networking tool was no longer necessary, and formed a new organization called the Institute for Animals and Society (IAS) to advance animal advocacy issues in public policy development by conducting scholarly research and analysis, providing education and training, and fostering cooperation with other social justice movements and interests. IAS merged with Society and Animals Forum to create the Animals and Society Institute in 2005. Less

The North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation, North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, North Carolina Farm Bureau Service Company, and North Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association are all represented in the documents of this collection. Also, a substantial amount of material testifies to the activities of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Women's Committee. Formats include correspondence, corporate documents, publications, financial ledgers, legal documents and transcripts, scrapbooks, photographs, film reels, audio recordings, and miscellaneous artifacts. Organized in 1936 as a chapter of the American Farm Bureau, the North Carolina Farm Bureau was created to be a grassroots organization that would give farmers a unified voice on agricultural issues. Its Women's Committee was established in 1942. In 1953, the North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company was established. Beginning in 1962, the North Carolina Farm Bureau pioneered creation of a group purchase program that was managed by the North Carolina Farm Bureau Service Company. The following year, the North Carolina Farm Bureau further expanded with the establishment of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association. Because of the organization's involvement in legal and legislative matters, a Legal Foundation for the North Carolina Farm Bureau was created in 1983. In 1987, a Political Action Committee was also added. Educational programs of the Farm Bureau include the R. Flake Shaw Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders, and "Agriculture in the Classroom." Less

Collection includes diaries, correspondence, field notes, manuscripts, articles, student records, photographs, negatives, photo albums, and artifacts, dating from 1865-1955. While the bulk of the material is in English, a substantial number of items, including a portion of the correspondence, diaries, and writings, are in German. This collection documents the professional and personal activities of Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck. These activities include his work at the Biltmore Estate and Forest and logging operations throughout Europe and the United States. In addition, this collection also provides significant information on the Biltmore Forest School and its students. Carl Alwin Schenck (March 25, 1868–May 17, 1955) was a forester and pioneering forestry educator in North America. Schenck was known for his contributions as the forester for George W. Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate and as the founder of the Biltmore Forest School, the first forestry school in the United States, in 1898. After the Biltmore Forestry School closed in 1913 Schenck returned to Germany and served in the German army during World War I. After the war, Schenck spent most of the 1920s and 1930s travelling across Europe and the United States giving tours and lectures to forestry students. Schenck made his last visit to the United States in 1952. Less

The Max Desfor Photographs and Papers contain photographs taken by Max Desfor while he was employed with the Associated Press from 1940 to 1968. There are also newspaper clippings, personal correspondence, business correspondence and other files dating from 1942 to 2008 as well as numerous photographs and negatives dating from 1936 to 2008. Also included in the collection are many photographs and negatives dated from 1936 to 2008 documenting Desfor's experiences in Korea, Japan, India and many other places, foreign and domestic. Some are photographs Desfor took for AP jobs while others are personal. The collection also contains Desfor's Pulitzer Prize-winning war photo, "Flight of Refugees Across Wrecked Bridge in Korea," taken in 1950, of Korean refugees fleeing along the twisted girders of a bombed bridge. The collection also contains videocassettes and CDs ranging in dates from 1985 to 2008, although most of them are undated, as well as slides from 1969 and 1972. Max Desfor was born in New York City on November 8, 1913. He studied at Brooklyn College in New York. He started his career at the Associated Press in 1933 as a darkroom assistant. In 1938, Desfor became staff photographer at the Associated Press bureau in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1939 he joined the Associated Press staff in Washington, D.C. In 1942 he was promoted to photo editor and in 1944 he was promoted to war correspondent and assigned to photograph Admiral Nimitz's command in the Pacific Ocean area. Less

This collection contains the audio recordings from 1971-1998 of interviews conducted early in Wolfram’s career with speakers of Appalachian English, Puerto Rican English, Vietnamese English, Ozark English, and African-American vernacular English. The collection also features transcripts of many of the interviews and manuscripts of Wolfram’s resulting work on these dialects. Walt Wolfram is currently (2016) the William C. Friday Distinguished Professor of English Linguistics at North Carolina State University. Wolfram has pioneered research on social and ethnic dialects since the 1960s, authoring or co-authoring 20 books and more than 250 articles on varieties of American English. Since joining NC State University faculty in 1992, Wolfram's has concentrated his efforts on preserving the rich linguistic heritage of North Carolina and raising public awareness of its cultural significance. He established the North Carolina Language and Life Project (NCLLP) in 1993, a project that focuses on research, graduate and undergraduate education, and outreach programs related to language in the American South. The Harry Charles Kelly Papers include correspondence, articles, reports, speeches, awards, photographs, artifacts and other items related to Kelly's career as a physicist, science administrator, and educator. Harry Charles Kelly (1908-1976), physicist, educator, science administrator and author, was educated in physics at Lehigh University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1945, Kelly accepted the position of Chief of Science and Technology for the Special Projects Unit of the United States Army. His work helped strengthen cooperative scientific ventures between Japan and the United States. Kelly later worked for the National Science Foundation and, resuming his academic career, served as Provost at North Carolina State University. Less

The Les Thornbury Interviews of Early North Carolina State University College of Design Faculty and Alumni contains DVDs and videotapes with video oral history interviews of early NC State University College of Design faculty and students conducted during the 1990s. These interviews have been converted to digital files and are accessible to researchers in that format. Leslie Arden Thornbury is a filmmaker and an alumnus of the NC State University School of Forest Resources and School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He was born on December 19, 1947, in Raleigh, N.C. He attended radio school in San Diego, California and served as a radioman in the Vietnam War in the late 1960s. After his military service, Thornbury completed his education, received a bachelor of conservation from North Carolina State University in 1974 and embarked on his career as a television producer. During the 1990s he worked on a proposed video documentary of the history of the College of Design which included these video oral history interviews with early faculty and students. Less

The Herb Schaal Landscape Architecture Papers contain sketches, drawings, reports, photographs, digital media, and correspondence from Schaal's career as a landscape architect and principal at EDAW, now AECOM. The collection particularly highlights Schaal's work on large-scale children's gardens, public botanical gardens, planning and design for university campuses, and analysis and design for key infrastructure projects such as highways and energy sites and corridors. Herb Schaal, a native of the San Francisco Bay area in California, is founding principal of the Fort Collins office of Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and Williams (EDAW, now AECOM), a landscape architecture firm. Schaal received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona and his Master of Landscape Architecture from State University of New York at Syracuse. He worked in the North Carolina State University Department of Landscape Architecture under Richard Moore, then chair of the department and previously Schaal's professor at Cal Poly Pomona. Schaal's work has included urban design studies; site planning and design for corporate facilities and campuses; highway and corridor work; and re-vegetation of difficult sites and disturbed areas. His specialty is public gardens, including educational gardens for children and contemplative gardens for healthcare facilities. Dozens of Schaal's projects have been recognized for awards by the American Society of Landscape Architects, of which he is a Fellow. Less

The Nina Strömgren Allen Papers contain research and teaching documents, publications, photographs and slides, film, and extensive audiovisual materials pertaining to Allen's career and research in cellular biology. Dr. Allen was a professor at NC State beginning in 1995 and established the Molecular and Cellular Imaging Facility. She served as Director of the Plant Biology Graduate Program and also served as Chair of the Faculty Senate beginning in 2005 before retiring from NC State in 2008. In the 1970s she co-founded the Light Microscopy course at the Marine Biologicical Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachussetts and served as a Trustee on the Executive Committee. During this time she also co-developed the patent for Video Microscopy, greatly supporting cellular research.
