The Nina Strömgren Allen Papers contain research and teaching documents, publications, photographs and slides, film, and extensive audiovisual materials pertaining to Allen's career and research in cellular biology. Dr. Allen was a professor at NC State beginning in 1995 and established the Molecular and Cellular Imaging Facility. She served as Director of the Plant Biology Graduate Program and also served as Chair of the Faculty Senate beginning in 2005 before retiring from NC State in 2008. In the 1970s she co-founded the Light Microscopy course at the Marine Biologicical Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachussetts and served as a Trustee on the Executive Committee. During this time she also co-developed the patent for Video Microscopy, greatly supporting cellular research. Additionally she has written several publications for the Cell Motility and the Cytoskeleton Journal.

Biographical/historical note

Dr. Nina Strömgren Allen was born in 1935 in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1957 she earned her B.S. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin. She then went on to earn her M.S. in 1970 and PhD in 1973 in Plant Physiology from the Univerity of Maryland at College Park. Beginning in 1970 she served as a researcher and later trustee of the Executive Committee at the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachussetts, where she and her husband Robert Day Allen co-developed and patented Video Microscopy (US Patent Number 4,412,246). Allen began her teaching career in 1975 with the Biology Department at Dartmouth College, then moved on to Wake Forest University from 1984-1995. She began teaching for the Department of Plant Biology at NC State University in 1995, where she established the Cellular and Molecular Imaging Facility (1996) and served as Director of the Plant Biology Graduate Program. She also served as Chair of the Faculty Senate in 2005. She retired from NC State in 2008, becoming Professor Emeriti in 2009. Over the course of her career she has published several works on research in cellular and plant biology both on her own and with colleagues. Allen has also been vocal in advocating for women's equality, especially in the sciences, giving many lectures on the subject over the years.

Scope/content

The Nina Strömgren Allen Papers contains a variety of materials, including: research and course documents, publications, books, journals, photos, film and film reels, slides, VHS and U-Matic tapes, Zip100 and floppy disks, CDs, and diskettes. All of these pertain to biological research, teaching, and achievements or publications of Nina Allen. Topics include video microscopy, cell motility, Nitella, Acetabularia, women in science, and research from Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
