Also included are a small number of government documents. The Institute of Textile Technology transferred its library to North Carolina State University's Burlington Textiles Library when it moved its operations to the NC State University Centennial Campus. The Burlington Textiles Library had maintained for years a vertical file for quick reference. The Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill Collection of Papers and Artifacts contains exhibit labels, a drawing, Articles of Agreement, and an iron spindle, all pertaining to the Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill, the first textile mill in North Carolina. Materials range in date from 1813 to 1871, with some documentation dating from 1991. The first textile mill in North Carolina was built before 1813 in Lincoln County, 1.5 miles east of Lincolnton. Michael Schenck built the mill and later partnered with Absolom Warlick to build a second in 1816. Through the 1820s and 1830s the profitable operation of the Schenck mills was a model to many more in North Carolina. The Schenck-Warlick Mill firmly established the Southern Textile industry. Less

Founded in 1944, The Institute of Textile Technology (ITT) joins individual companies in collective support of a private educational and research institution. Through its alliance with North Carolina State University College of Textiles, these institutions offer industry support unrivaled around the globe. In addition to the fabric samples, the collection contains notes, notebooks, correspondence, and a news clipping, as well as both domestic and international reports on textile production, manufacturers, fabric weaving, and fabric costs. This collection contains black-and-white photographic prints depicting the North Carolina State College (later University) School (later College) of Textiles. Represented in the photographs are faculty, students, and equipment, as well as lab facilities in Nelson Hall and David Clark Labs. Most images are undated, but all appear to have been created during the 1950s and early 1960s. Likewise, there is little information on the photographers, but all appear to have been created by photographers employed or contracted by the college. This collection contains pages from a notebook for classes Textiles 341 and 342, Fabric Design and Analysis, taught by J.A. Porter. The notebook includes fabric samples, design sheets with drawn and colored weaving designs, and fabric analysis sheets containing numerical analysis of fabric. It also includes laboratory reports, dated October and November 1950, submitted by Paul L. Cabrey. Paul L. Cabrey of Nabertha, Pa., was a student in the School of Textiles, North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering. Textiles 341 and 342, Fabric Design and Analysis, was a course required of juniors in textile manufacturing. The course covered construction of fancy weaves, fabrics backed with warp or filling, fabrics ornamented with extra warp or extra filling, regular and fancy piques, and methods of producing new designs. Students learned to analyze samples of fancy fabrics for design, drawing-in draft, reed plan and chain plan and to calculate how to reproduce fabrics when only a small sample was available. Less

Of special interest in this collection is correspondence with then-Democratic presidential nominee Franklin Delano Roosevelt, correspondence with a North Carolina State alumnus serving in World War II, and a signed 4th edition of Nelson's book, Practical Loom Fixing. Thomas Nelson (1872-1953) worked as educator, administrator, and textile technologist. He served the Textiles Department at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1901 to 1949, originally as an instructor, then Head of the Textiles Department, and later as the first Dean of the School of Textiles. The William Edward Shinn Papers, 1929-1975, contains items relating to Shinn's career at North Carolina State College (later University) as a student, professor, and department head. The majority of the materials document Shinn's professional teaching career at the university as well as his research on various textile and knitting technologies. A small number of personal materials are also included. William Edward Shinn (1900-1995) received a B.S. in Textiles from North Carolina State College (later University) in 1924, and later that year organized and taught the first knitting course offered by NC State. Shinn received an M.S. in Textiles from NC State in 1929, and taught courses in knitting technology at Clemson University from 1929 to 1935, and then at NC State from 1935 to 1969. In 1942, Shinn was promoted to Head of the Department of Knitting Technology at NC State. Shinn had numerous publications during his career, and made a valuable contribution to medicine in the 1950s when he produced the first knitted artificial aorta. Less

This collection contains technical bulletins from the Calco Chemcial Division of the American Cyanamid Company and Courtaulds Limited, which manufactured Courtelle. The dates of the bulletins range from 1937 to 1988. New Jersey’s Calco Chemical Company was founded in 1915 at a site close to the town of Bound Brook, New Jersey, almost adjacent to the Raritan River, to manufacture coal-tar intermediates required to make synthetic dyestuffs. After 1918, Calco also successfully embarked on the manufacture of synthetic dyestuffs by processes that were far more complex than hitherto used in American chemical industry. After 1945, American Cyanamid’s Calco Chemical Division specialized in vat dyestuffs, fluorescent whitening agents, polyurethane and acrylic polymers, and the invention of herbicides. In 1993, Cyanamid finished its transformation from a chemical to a drug and agricultural products company. Courtelle was an acrylic fabric resembling wool that was developed and manufactured by Courtaulds Ltd., a United Kingdom-based manufacturer of fabric, clothing, artificial fibers, and chemicals. Stanley Backer (1920-2003) attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning degrees in engineering and textile technology. He joined the faculty at M.I.T. in 1951 and eventually became the head of the Fibers and Polymers Laboratory. His research in textiles engineering led to a greater understanding of fiber structure and fabric behavior. Backer also led a program to develop one of the first online information retrieval systems, known as the Textile Information Retrieval Product. He died in 2003. Stanley Backer's papers consist of articles, books, papers, theses and other material reflecting his textile engineering research while attending and teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A Research Files series contains collected information on fabric mechanics, texturing, and other topics. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Special Program series contains material on programs in which Backer had participated. The G. Milton Small Papers contain architectural drawings and photographs of projects and structures designed by architect G. Milton Small between 1950 and 1981. The collection primarily consists of architectural drawings of Small's designs, many of which were constructed on the North Carolina State University campus and elsewhere in the Raleigh, North Carolina, region. The collection also contains photographs taken by architectural photographers Joseph Molitor and Holland Wright, as well as Small's writings on computerized parking systems. Two additional series were added in 2015, which include project files and specifications for some projects as well as catalogs and related materials from architectural firms. Milton Small Jr. (1916-1992) was a student of Mies van der Rohe and was one of the foremost modernist architects working in the southeastern United States in the later half of the 20th century. Small was born in Collinsville, Oklahoma. He graduated with a bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and a masters from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied under Mies van der Rohe. In Chicago he worked for the firms Perkins and Will, and Hudgins Thompson and Ball. Small relocated to North Carolina in 1948 to head the architectural office of William Henley Deitrick, at that time Raleigh's largest architectural firm and the most committed to modernist design. Small was recommended for the position by a former professor at the University of Oklahoma, Henry Kamphoefner, who was himself relocating to Raleigh to take over the deanship of North Carolina State University's new School of Design. Small headed Deitrick's office for two years, during which time he produced several important modernist designs, principally, a new clubhouse for the Carolina Country Club, which was the subject of a Life magazine article, "New Country Club" (31 July 1950. p. 70). Robert McKinley, who worked at the Kellwood Company for ten years, was in possession of the documents found in this collection. However, many documents, patents, agreements, and financial records originally belonged to Robert M. Matthews. The collection contains both business-related documents as well as documents, photos, slides, and samples pertaining specifically to the garments themselves. There are many articles within the collection. The bulk of the material comes from the 1980s about twenty years after the company was established. Robert McKinley began by working for Sears as a buyer in New York and Chicago. McKinley worked at Kellwood Company in Siler City, North Carolina for ten years. Robert M. Matthews worked for Robert McKinley. During his career at Kellwood Company, he was able to acquire two patents regarding hosiery and panty-hose creation and material during early 1970s.Kellwood Company was formed in 1961 due to the merger of Sears and other companies. Kellwood company still exists today and is acquired by a Hong Kong-based investor group. Less
