The Chinqua-Penn Plantation records contain the papers of the Penn family (1863-1975, bulk 1923-1946) as well as the records of the management of the property by the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, North Carolina State University, and the Chinqua-Penn Foundation (1921-1926, 1957-2002, bulk 1965-2002). This collection includes correspondence, reports, financial records, property and animal records, architectural drawings, photographs and scrapbooks, audio-visual materials, newspaper clippings, marketing materials, and inventories of the art, artifacts, and furniture collections, among other items. Within the materials dating from the management period are extensive records from research conducted on the property and the Penn family. Named for the chinquapin, a dwarf chestnut tree, Chinqua-Penn Plantation was built by Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Penn and Margaret Beatrice "Betsy" Schoellkopf (Schwill) Penn during the 1920s. The large house reflected their lifestyle of entertaining and traveling, and it showcased the art and furniture they collected from around the world. The plantation's grounds evolved into an exotic horticultural collection of both native and imported plants. Chinqua-Penn was maintained by the University of North Carolina, Greensboro from 1965 to the late 1980s. NC State University took over its management and reopened it shortly thereafter. In 1991, the Chinqua-Penn Foundation was formed to preserve the house and open it to visitors. The foundation secured the plantation's status as a National Historic Landmark. Although NC State University continues to administer the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center on the mansion grounds, further funding problems forced the foundation to close the museum's doors. The records also contain a number of audiovisual formats, including photographs, slides, and video cassettes of various types (VHS, Betacam SP, MBU 5s, UCA60), documenting broadcasts, press conferences, public service announcements and other media presentations. The materials date from 1896 to 2007. As of 2013, the Office of Public Affairs consisted of three divisions: Communications Services, News Services, and Web Communications. The News Services division uses a wide variety of methods to promote NC State University on local, national, and international levels. Staff members utilize traditional press releases, news tips, and direct contact with journalists to give the university, its scholarship and its research more visibility. The records of the Early Chancellors in the Office of the Chancellor of, at first the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and then North Carolina State College, include correspondence, telegrams, annual reports, policy statements, booklets, financial records, programs, photographs, newspaper clippings, blueprints, and various professional papers related to education and agriculture in North Carolina. Topics include military training and discipline, the naming of dormitories in honor of former students of the College who died overseas in the World War, budget records, and the consolidation of three North Carolina higher educational institutions. The records of the first five administrations range in date from 1891 to 1934. The “Early Chancellors” include the first five chief executives, or presidents, of first the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and then North Carolina State College. Alexander Quarles Holladay was the first chief executive of North Carolina College for Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (1889-1899). The second chief executive was George Tayloe Winston (1899-1908). The third chief executive was Daniel Harvey Hill, Jr. (1908-1916). Wallace Carl Riddick was the fourth chief executive of the College (1916-1923). The records of John William Harrelson's administration in the Office of the Chancellor at North Carolina State College (later, University) include correspondence, financial records, and other general administrative paperwork. Topics include the consolidation of the University of North Carolina, post-World War II veteran enrollment, the design and and construction of the nuclear reactor on NC State's campus, and other general history of the campus during the time period of these records, 1933-1953. John William Harrelson was selected to head North Carolina State College in 1934 under the new title of Dean of Administration. His title changed to Chancellor in 1945, and he served that position until 1953. During his leadership, Harrelson participated in the consolidation of North Carolina's institutions of higher education. With the advent of World War II, military training played an expanding role at NC State. After 1945, the College saw expanded growth with the establishment of the School of Design and the School of Forestry, as well as the construction of a nuclear reactor. Harrelson died in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1955. Less

The Park Scholarships were established at North Carolina State University in 1996 with a grant from the Park Foundation of Ithaca, N.Y., to fund an inaugural class of 25 scholars. The Park Scholarships program was named for Roy H. Park, NC State University class of 1931. The Program was established to provide a superb educational opportunity for exceptionally talented and well-prepared young men and women who merit the intellectual challenge of a distinguished faculty and a superior university. In 1955, the position of Dean of Faculty was first established at North Carolina State College (University). In 1967, the title changed to Provost, and in 1971, to Provost and Vice Chancellor. The Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost is NC State's chief academic officer, supporting faculty and programming that make the university a higher education leader. As executive vice chancellor, the provost is the senior executive responsible for NC State’s day-to-day activities. The provost is responsible for the university’s 10 colleges and 12 critical corollary units. This collection contains personnel files of faculty, graduate students, and other EPA (exempt from state personnel act) employees who "separated" (left employment) with the university before 1970. Included are some visiting lecturers for this time period. The files contain records of the full employment period of these employees, some of whom began employment with NC State in the 1930s and earlier. Documents most likely found in these files are personnel action forms, faculty information forms, and curriculum vitae (CVs). Files for English and Design faculty are also likely to contain correspondence. Also included in this collection are a few statistical reports on faculty salaries, degrees, and other topics. UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, EACH FOLDER MUST BE REVIEWED BY SPECIAL COLLECTIONS STAFF BEFORE ACCESS IS GRANTED. Redaction of some documents may occur before access is granted, and a few folders may be restricted in their entirety. Under the Provost, an EPA Personnel Office existed from at least 1992 to 1994. It had become Academic Personnel by September 1995 and Academic Personnel Services by August 1996. Materials range in date from 1887 to 2023. The records also include the Office of Finance and Administration website. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration at North Carolina State University was formerly known as Bursar, Treasurer, Controller, and Business Manager. The mission statement of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration is "By stewarding financial assets, optimizing physical resources and investing in human capital, we will work with university constituencies to position NC State as a premier land grant university and world-class institution." As of 2020, the Office consists of the following units: Budget and Resource Management, Campus Enterprises, Environmental Health and Public Safety,Facilities, Finance, Human Resources, and Real Estate and Development. These units report to the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business, and they provide infrastructure services essential to supporting the students, faculty and staff of the university.
