The Sharon Curtin Papers, 1964-2020, contain photographs, newsclippings, notes, correspondence, and other materials primarily documenting the NC State University campus and the Department of Poultry Science. There is some information on Poultry Science faculty members and staff. Also included is a book that Curtin wrote about growing up near Weaverville, North Carolina, and photographs and a DVD showing her husband, Terrence M. Curtin, in 2020. Diane Sharon Saunders was born in Weaverville, North Carolina, in 1942. She came to NC State University in the 1960s and worked as a research technician in the Department of Poultry Science labs under Dr. Pat B. Hamilton for many years. From 1981 to 1986, she was in the microbiology lab of the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1987, she married Dean Terry of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Less

The records of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, include administrative records, papers of prominent former members, records of various committees, files on club and chapter affiliates, records of the Society's annual meeting, information related to the publication of the Society's journal American Scientist, files concerning the Sigma Xi Center, subject files, and audiovisual materials. Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, was formed in 1886 at Cornell University as an honor society for science and engineering; the original founders of Sigma Xi were members of the Sibley College of Mechanical Engineering at the university. Moving beyond the Society's early intention of fostering companionship, Sigma Xi has since evolved to offer the sciences a strong, unified voice in support of scientific advancement and achievement. The Slater Newman Papers, 1932-2014, contains notes, correspondence, administrative records, and other papers from the career of Slater E. Newman (1924-2015), academic cognitive psychologist and human rights organizer. The bulk of the materials in the collection were created between 1957, when Newman joined the North Carolina State University Department of Psychology, and 2014. Earlier papers relate to Newman's education and early career in research, teaching, and the United States military. Newman founded, led, and participated in many professional and human rights organizations; papers related to these organizational involvements, along with Newman's teaching and research files and his vast correspondence with fellow academics and activists, form the majority of the collection. Physically, most of the materials are typed and handwritten loose pages, notebooks, and computer printouts; there are also some newspaper clippings and bound volumes, and a small number of photographs and artifacts. Academic psychologist and human rights activist Slater E. Newman (1924-2015) was a member of the psychology faculty at North Carolina State University from 1957 to his retirement in 2003. In his research in cognitive psychology Newman investigated learning and memory, focusing in his later work on how people learn Braille and other tactile alphabets. He was an active member and leader in several professional organizations of psychologists. In addition to his academic research, Newman was deeply involved in human rights organizing. His first political projects represented in this collection dealt with academic freedom, but a major theme of his activism was international human rights, in particular promoting United States ratification of United Nations conventions. Newman helped to found and lead a number of human rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union affiliate in North Carolina and the Human Rights Coalition of North Carolina. At NC State University, he advocated for annual campus events teaching about and celebrating human rights. Less

Created in the 1950s and originally named the Society of Technical Writers and Publishers, the Society for Technical Communication (STC) is an organization "dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of technical communication" and "improving the quality and effectiveness of technical communication for audiences worldwide." The STC Records document the activities and personnel of this organization at both the national and chapter levels during the years 1956-1996. Less

This collection contains a one-page biography of Sol Williams (Doc) Newton written by his son, mementos from Newton's induction into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, correspondence and photocopies of clippings and citations regarding Coach Newton's career in intercollegiate athletics, and several obituary notices. Newton (1893-1970) played professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles and coached college football and baseball at Davidson College before becoming head football coach at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1937 to 1944. The Solar Energy Research and Education Foundation Ephemeral Publications and Audiovisual Collection is comprised of various ephemeral publications documenting the solar energy industry and the research into solar energy as an alternative energy source. The collection also includes audio and video recordings about solar energy. The Solar Energy Research and Education Foundation (SEREF) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to education, infrastructure assistance, rural development, small business, knowledge exchange, and capacity development relating to solar energy primarily in Latin America and Caribbean as well as the rest of the world. Contained here are the specifications for the Louis R. Wilson Residence in Chapel Hill. These are one of the few building specifications for North Carolina structures during this time period and one of the few records of architect Charles Barrett. The building was the house of Louis Round Wilson, librarian and first director of the School of Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was the namesake for the Wilson Library on that campus. Charles Barrett was a builder-architect who practiced in North Carolina during the early twentieth century. In Raleigh he designed the Bishop's House of St. Mary's School and houses in the Oakwood neighborhood. He also designed prominent churches in Louisburg and the Boyd-Kerr House in Warrenton. Barrett published Colonial Southern Homes (1903) and (with Frank Thompson) Plans for Public Schoolhouses. Less

Stanley Backer (1920-2003) attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning degrees in engineering and textile technology. He joined the faculty at M.I.T. in 1951 and eventually became the head of the Fibers and Polymers Laboratory. His research in textiles engineering led to a greater understanding of fiber structure and fabric behavior. Backer also led a program to develop one of the first online information retrieval systems, known as the Textile Information Retrieval Product. He died in 2003. Stanley Backer's papers consist of articles, books, papers, theses and other material reflecting his textile engineering research while attending and teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A Research Files series contains collected information on fabric mechanics, texturing, and other topics. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Special Program series contains material on programs in which Backer had participated. The Supervised Theses series includes those supervised by Backer while a professor at M.I.T. A series of Backer's published works is also included, as well as a list of his collected works. Less

The Stanley George Stephens Papers, 1941-1984, contain papers, publication list, journal articles, and reprints and one book. Stanley George Stephens (1911-1986), known as "Steve," joined the faculty of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1949, serving first as a professor of agronomy, then as head of the Faculty of Genetics from 1951 to 1957. In 1967 he became the first NC State faculty member elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He retired in 1974 as a professor emeritus after 25 years at the university. Less

The State Sentinel Newspaper Collection contains bound volumes of the newspaper which ran from August of 1973 to August of 1974. This collection is comprised of volume 1 numbers 1- 55; Summer Edition numbers 1-3; and volume 2 number 1, the final issue. The newspaper reported NC State news including athletics (particularly football and basketball), student government, campus and local events, and school policies. The State Sentinel offered some different content from the Technician in its more extensive coverage of local politics. There are many articles and editorials on this topic. Ralph James Irace, Jr. was the editor of the State Sentinel. In the first issue, he describes the paper as "of, by, and for the students of N.C. State University." It was funded entirely by advertising, not student fees, to present other viewpoints and opinions to those being represented in the Technician student paper. It was published Tuesdays and Thursdays and owned by the State Sentinel Corporation, chartered as a non-profit student organization. The State Sentinel halted publication in August of 1974 due to financial duress. In April of that year, the Student Media Authority rejected a proposal for them to take over the publication (and its debts). Less

The Stephen G. Rea Papers (1976-1987) are comprised of 0.2 linear feet of photocopies of correspondence, certificates, newsclippings, programs, photographs, and other documents. These materials document Rea's involvement in ASME, Engineers Council, Golden Chain, and other NC State University student organizations. Also included are materials from internships, soccer, the Army National Guard, and the City of Raleigh. A native of Goldsboro, NC, Stephen G. Rea ("Steve") was a student at North Carolina State University during the 1970s and 1980s. He majored in mechanical engineering, and he received his BS in 1980 and MS in 1987. After leaving NC State Rea worked for Carolina Power & Light. He then worked more than 25 years for Heyward Incorporated, eventually becoming Senior Vice President of Power Capital Sales. For his service to the North Carolina power industry, the governor bestowed on Rea the Order of the Longleaf Pine. Less

Drafts and offprints of articles, 1978-1998, and reviews, 1982-1996, written by Steve F. Sapontzis, as well as drafts of speeches and presentations by Sapontzis, reviews of his book, Morals, Reason, and Animals, clippings of articles by or about Sapontzis, and flyers and leaflets advertising events at which Sapontzis was to speak. Steve F. Sapontzis, professor emeritus of philosophy at California State University East Bay (formerly California State University Hayward), taught philosophy at California State University Hayward from 1971 until 1999. Sapontzis is the author of Morals, Reason, and Animals (1987) and editor of Food for Thought: the Debate Over Eating Meat (2004). Since 1984, he has been a co-editor of Between the Species: A Journal of Ethics. Less

Contained in this collection are Spiker's grant proposals and seminar files from 1980 to 2006. The grant proposals were submitted to the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and grant-awarding units within North Carolina State University. The seminar files contain materials from Spiker's seminars given throughout the world, including handwritten notes and printouts of notes, powerpoint slides, and papers. Steven Spiker (1941-) has been a professor of genetics at North Carolina State University, where he has taught and conducted research, since 1981. He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. Less

Contained in this collection are digital files (audio) for sixteen interviews conducted by StoryCorps and about the NC State University Libraries. In January 2017, StoryCorps, a national oral history program, visited the NC State University Libraries to record stories from students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and collaborators from the NC State campus and across the country. The honor came as part of the Libraries winning the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). In the interviews, people discussed the roles that libraries, and the NC State University Libraries in particular, have played in their lives. This collection contains the professional papers of Stuart McGuire Noblin, including those related to his professorship at North Carolina State University, and on topics of his research, including farmers' movements, the National Grange, and the role of churches in constructive race relations. Also contained in this collection are Noblin's personal papers from his involvement in the North Carolina Chess Association. Stuart Noblin was a professor in the Departments of History and Political Science at North Carolina State University from 1947 to 1976. He also served as part-time University Archivist from 1957 to 1964, as well as chairman of the Committee on the History of the College, and was a member of the Faculty Senate from 1957 to 1961. The Student Leaders Oral Histories contains digital audio and video recordings of interviews conducted with former NC State student leaders as part of the Student Leadership Initiative. This multi-year program has chronicled the experiences and impact of former student leaders through the collection of video oral histories, biographical essays and digitized images. The 2010 Cathy Sterling interviews contain audio only, while the remainder of the interviews also include video. Interviews were conducted by Genya O'Gara, Jonathan Holloway, Samantha Rich, Kelly Murray , and Todd Kosmerick beginning in 2010. Contains oral histories gathered as part of the Student Leadership Initiative, a project undertaken by the Special Collections Research Center to chronicle the experiences and impact of former North Carolina State University students. The Subhash K. Batra papers contain correspondence, publication drafts, and reprints of published articles reflecting Batra’s work on nonwovens manufacturing technology and textile and fiber systems. Dr. Subhash Kumar Batra began his education in India and earned advanced degrees from MIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States. He joined the NC State University textiles faculty in 1977 and served as the director of the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center (now the Nonwovens Institute) at NC State University from 1991 to 1999. Dr. Batra is now Professor Emeritus at the College of Textiles. Less
