Shout-outs From My Colleagues

The implementation of new software for TRLN Direct meant the Discovery Systems Unit had to touch almost all of the systems they manage: the Catalog, My Account, Sirsi, ILLiad, NCIP connections, and more. Adam, Josh, Dawn, and Kristen brought creative and user-focused ideas to every puzzling edge case, helped us work with our TRLN colleagues, and even took the opportunity not just to replace what we had before, but improve upon it. The end result was a smooth implementation. I am grateful that I get to work with this team regularly!

Dawn helped us improve our process for connecting with students as part of the Personal Librarian Program. When we consulted with her about our data issues, she helped identify a new solution that will save the folks working on the Personal Librarian program a lot of time. I highly appreciate and value Dawn's contributions to the Libraries. Her work on the technical side of the library may not be easily seen by students and faculty but she is always helping us do our jobs better and more efficiently.

A recently published article describes the incredibly thoughtful and practical approaches that this multi-departmental, 4-person team took to create user-centered library email notifications. A quote I love from the article: "As we evaluated and rewrote our email templates, we considered how a stressed user or a user in crisis would react to the email. We repeatedly asked ourselves questions beginning with “What about a user who…” or “What if the user…?” We aimed to find a way to add the least amount of stress to our users’ already stressful lives, while still suggesting that they take action in response to some of these email templates." Check it out: Davis, R.
