In 2011, the NC State University Libraries and African American Cultural Center introduced the Red, White, and Black walking tour of campus, highlighting locations of historical significance in the lives and experiences of Black students and the larger community. The tours were led by Toni Harris Thorpe (commonly known as “Mama Thorpe”), who was then Program Coordinator of the African American Cultural Center, and Walter Jackson, Associate Professor of History.
On October 3, 2016, 70 students participated in a "Black Out" protest at football game in Carter-Finley Stadium. The students wore black in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement and raised their fists during the National Anthem as a display against systemic racism.
"The students that are able to accomplish a lot, number one, understand that being a leader means that you empower the masses."
