This records subgroup contains correspondence among North Carolina State University College of Textiles faculty, staff, and administrators and other files relating to the operations of the school; budget material, and Textile Extension correspondence. Documentation in the academic series includes information regarding Textiles College and extension projects and research, and Textiles College brochures and catalogs. Budget material includes monthly and year-to-date budget and expenditure reports of the College, the North Carolina Textiles Foundation, as well as other personnel and financial aid paperwork. The Textiles Extension correspondence series consists of correspondence to and from textile industry representatives regarding applied research requests and information on instructional services provided by the College of Textiles. This subgroup was formerly numbered UA 130.5.
The Office of Textile Extension and Applied Research works to enhance the relationship between the North Carolina State University College of Textiles and the textile industry. The Extension office offers continuing education opportunities to industry partners. The Applied Research program sponsors research projects to supplement education and encourage participation in industrial research and development. The Associate Dean oversees the programs and is a primary contact person for industry partners interested in education or research opportunities.
The Office of Textile Extension and Applied Research (TEAR) in the North Carolina State University College of Textiles works to enhance the relationship between the College and the textile industry. Textile research and extension activities have taken place since early in the history of North Carolina State University. In 1968, the Office of Textiles Extension and Applied Research (TEAR) was established in the College of Textiles. The Extension branch of TEAR continues to offer short courses, seminars, conferences, and other continuing education opportunities on and off campus to alumni, textiles executives, and other industry partners. In collaboration with private industry partners, the Applied Research branch sponsors textiles research projects intended to supplement traditional education and encourage participation in textile industry research and development. The Associate Dean is actively involved in the development and operation of the extension and research programs and is a primary contact person for industry partners interested in continuing education programs and research opportunities.

A series of academic files contains correspondence, brochures, and documentation showing extension efforts and faculty conference participation. Correspondence is mostly among North Carolina State University College of Textiles faculty, staff, and administrators and relates to the operations of the school. Documentation also includes information regarding the first experimental off-campus courses taught via television. Textiles College brochures and catalogs dating from 1908 to 1926 and 1946 to 1984, college research reports, and a high school textile program survey and evaluation are also included. Budget material, dated from 1964 to 1975 covers monthly and year-to-date budget and expenditure reports of the College and the North Carolina Textiles Foundation. Personnel and financial aid paperwork dated from 1965 to 1978 is also included in this series. The Textiles Extension Correspondence series consists of correspondence to and from textile industry representatives regarding applied research requests and instructional services provided by the College of Textiles. Much of the correspondence concerns visits to the college, the development of credit courses and short-course training programs, and the Textiles Off-campus Televised Education (TOTE) program. Press releases, news articles and other information are included in most company profiles. A number of press photographs and a few fabric samples can be found in the collection, accompanied by requests for fabric analyses or other research. Correspondence between Dame S. Hamby and Governor James B. Hunt concerns the future of the textile economy in North Carolina. The correspondence in Series 3. is dated from 1961 to 1982, and also includes several undated documents.

The bulk of the series is correspondence among North Carolina State University College of Textiles faculty, staff, and administrators relating to the operations of the school, including course scheduling, budgets, and research. The files included the correspondence of Dean David W. Chaney, Associate Dean Dame S. Hamby, and Extension Specialist Horace W. Wilson. Of notable mention is documentation regarding the first experimental off-campus courses taught via television. This series also includes Textiles College brochures and catalogs dating from 1908 to 1984, college research reports, and a high school textile program survey and evaluation conducted by Wilson.
Series 2. Budget, 1964 - 1978 is CLOSED until further notice.
Material includes monthly and year-to-date budget and expenditure reports. Reports contain documentation of salaries, travel, equipment, and other overhead expenses for basic textiles research, education, and extension. Monthly and year-to-date budget reports are also available for the North Carolina Textiles Foundation, including extension and recruiting, as well as noise control and Fort Bragg programs. Information on the College's payroll budget, salary assignments and adjustments, and payroll changes are included. Personnel summaries describe positions and responsibilites, and individual faculty research budgets. Also included are faculty and temporary employee appointment letters and documentation of financial aid recipients.
The Textiles Extension Correspondence series consists of correspondence to and from textile industry representatives regarding applied research requests and instructional services provided by the College of Textiles. Noteworthly correspondents include Burlington, Cannon, Cotton Incorporated, Dow, Dupont, Johnson and Johnson, Monsanto, and a number of southeastern textile mills. Much of the correspondence concerns visits to the college, as well as the development of credit courses and short-course training programs, including the Textiles Off-campus Televised Education (TOTE) program. Press releases, news articles, and other information are included in most company profiles. A small file includes research findings on byssinosis (brown lung disease). Nominations for and other information on the Cannon and Harrelson Professorships is included. A couple fabric samples can be found in the collection accompanied by requests for fabric analyses or other research. Correspondence between Dame S. Hamby and GovernorJames B. Hunt concerns the future of the textile economy in North Carolina. And several photographs are scattered throughout the series, including head and shoulder shots of DeanChaney, and textile executives and researchers on a tours of Albany Felt Company and the Millikin textile plant.
