Also included are publications produced with the North Carolina Commercial Flower Growers' Association. Materials range in date from the 1900s to 1990s.
This collection also includes a large amount of photographic materials including Kodachrome slides, lantern slides, photographs, and negatives. Much of this material is undated. The Kodachrome slides appear to be from the 1940s to the 1970s. The lantern slides were hand colored by Effie Brown Earll Slingerland, an artist and advocate for women's suffrage.
With the founding of NC State College in 1889, five academic divisions were created, one of which was the department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany. Following the general reorganization of the School of Agriculture in 1923, the horticultural extension work performed outside the department became fully integrated with the academic and research activities of the department. Today, the Department of Horticultural Science occupies Kilgore Hall (constructed in 1952), employs over fifty faculty, and continues to play an important role in state-wide horticultural research and extension. The department assumed its current name in 1962.

With the founding of NC State College in 1889 were created five academic divisions, one of which was the department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany. Around the same time, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture created a division of horticulture in the Agricultural Experiment Station. W. F. Massey was named to head both positions in 1889, and would serve State College until 1907. The department was housed in Primrose Hall after its construction in 1896, remaining there until 1905 when it relocated to Agricultural Hall (demolished 1956). Under Massey's leadership, students were trained in theory as well as the practice of horticulture, and he used his position in the Experiment Station to give his students the hands-on training they needed. In 1901, a separate Division of Biology was formed and the department began to be known as the Department of Horticulture.
Following the general reorganization of the School of Agriculture in 1923, the horticultural extension work performed outside the department became fully integrated with the academic and research activities of the department. After that time the department moved once again, this time relocating to Polk Hall. The department also maintained a farm on college grounds, between Polk and Dan Allen Drive, south of Hillsborough Street to the railroad. The department used it to conduct research experiments and as a demonstration farm for cultural practices.
From that time until the years following World War II, the department faculty would remain small in number, despite the variety and importance of academic, research, and extension work performed. Today, the Department of Horticultural Science occupies Kilgore Hall (constructed in 1952), employs over fifty faculty, and continues to play an important role in state-wide horticultural research and extension. The department assumed its current name in 1962.
Additional information and resources on the history of the Department of Horticultural Science can be found through the NC State University Historical State website.

This series contains slides, lantern slides, photographs, and glass plate negatives. The Kodachrome slides date from 1940 to circa 1975. Most depict fruit and vegetable crops, both in the field and after being harvested. Also included are images of greenhouses, department trips, farmworkers, and agricultural equipment.
The majority of the lantern slides depict the planting, harvesting, sorting, packaging, and selling of crops, especially peaches and apples, and the people involved. Several contain images of transportation and family life. Also included are a few images of children, a diagram of a peach sorting table, nutrition information, and images of family dinner tables. One slide is dated 1905. The rest are undated but also appear to date from the early twentieth century. Most of the slides are black and white, although some have been colored.
The glass plate negatives also depict crops. Included are negatives measuring 5x7 inches and 8x10 inches. Several are identified as dating from the 1900s and 1910s and others are undated but also appear to date from this era.
The photographs, many of which are accompanied by negatives, depict a wide range of departmental activities and range in date from the 1900s to 1991. Many relate to work done at the Department of Horticulture's Experiment stations in the 1920s and 1930s, and these include a large number addressing fruit tree pruning. Also included are images of Kilgore Hall, faculty photographs and a handmade booklet with photographs of Field Day in Willard, North Carolina in 1933.
This sub-series contains pages 35 MM slides housed in sleeves. The subjects include crops, farmland, trees, domestic and foreign travel, and harvesting.

Some of the lantern slides have been colorized by Effie Brown Earll Slingerland, who began painting lantern slides in 1904 for nature studies and college agricultural departments. Her first husband, Mark Vernon Slingerland, was a professor of entomology at Cornell University, from which she also graduated from 1893. She helped create the Homemaker's Club of Manchester, New Hampshire in 1915 and became president. She was a watercolor artist and a member of social and philanthropic clubs such as the Woman's Alliance, Woman's Educational and Industrial Union of Auburn, New York, Ithaca Woman's Club, Child Study, Campus Club of Cornell University, and Cornell Woman's Club. She has been described as a universalist and a supporter of women's suffrage. In 1924, she became the first woman to be re-elected to the New Hampshire Legislature.
This sub-series contains lantern slides and large and small glass negatives about crops, farming, harvesting, people, packing, and orchards. Some slides are identified with North Carolina locations. The unidentified slides are presumed also to depict North Carolina locations.
