This scrapbook, entitled, "Life on our Farm...1937", includes photographs, narrative text written by Helen Boney and newspaper clippings documenting a year on the Boney Family farm, 1937, located near Teachey in Duplin County, North Carolina. The scrapbook documents various farm activities including pig raising, crop planting, and production of related goods such as lard. The scrapbook also contains photographs relating to home demonstrations held on the farm including a tile work demonstration. The Boney family were long-time participants of the yearly Farm Home Week in Duplin County, North Carolina, and were active in cooperative extension and home demonstration work. In 1937 Mrs. Boney served as president of the State Home Demonstration Federation of North Carolina and in 1938, Mr. Boney was elected president of the Farmers' Convention. The Edward M. Hodges Farm Papers contain the income, expense, and tax records of the Edward M. Hodges Farm from 1953 to 2000 with a few items related to soil and water conservation and four acreage maps of the farm. Edward M. Hodges, an alumnus of North Carolina State University, farmed from 1952 until he retired for health reasons and sold the farm in 2000. He began farming with his father, James Edward Hodges, when he returned from the Korean War. At that time the farm was known as the Green Meadows Farm. The farm was located on the south side of North Carolina Highway 33 about 7 miles east of Chocowinity toward Aurora (what is known as the Hodges Stretch). The farm was originally a portion of the William Augustus Blount plantation, Meadowville. During the 1940s, before Ed joined the farming operation, his father raised turkeys on the farm and had a contract to supply turkeys to North Carolina State College. Less

This collection includes two scrapbooks that contain photographs, newspaper clippings and letters from the Future Farmers of America Coats Chapter, Coats High School, Coats, North Carolina, documenting the organization from 1959 to 1962. The scrapbooks were created during the time when Murry O. Phillips taught vocational agriculture at Coats High School and contain letters to Phillips from business and civic leaders and from his state department of public instruction supervisors as well as other items documenting Phillips's life and career, especially his work with the Future Farmers of America organization. Future Farmers of America, later known as the National FFA Organization, was founded in 1928. The organization brings together students, teachers and agribusiness to solidify support for agricultural education in middle and high schools where members are engaged in a wide range of curriculum and FFA activities leading to career opportunities in agriculture. There was an active chapter of Future Farmers of America in at Coats High School in Harnett County, North Carolina, during the time when Murry O. Phillips taught vocational agriculture there. Less

The John Ray Eaton papers contain personal correspondence, photographs of the farm at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, a copy of Massey's Garden Book for the Southern States, and a farming log book. John Ray Eaton (1884-1918) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1910 and became the superintendent of its farm. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Horticultural Science contain newsletters, budget information, academic and administrative reports, departmental publications, memoranda, information regarding departmental programs and events, slides, photographs, lantern slides, and glass plate negatives. Also included are publications produced with the North Carolina Commercial Flower Growers' Association. Materials range in date from the 1900s to 1990s.This collection also includes a large amount of photographic materials including Kodachrome slides, lantern slides, photographs, and negatives. Much of this material is undated. The Kodachrome slides appear to be from the 1940s to the 1970s. The lantern slides and glass plate negatives date to the early twentieth century and depict the planting, harvesting, sorting, packaging, and selling of crops. The lantern slides were hand colored by Effie Brown Earll Slingerland, an artist and advocate for women's suffrage. With the founding of NC State College in 1889, five academic divisions were created, one of which was the department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany. Following the general reorganization of the School of Agriculture in 1923, the horticultural extension work performed outside the department became fully integrated with the academic and research activities of the department. Today, the Department of Horticultural Science occupies Kilgore Hall (constructed in 1952), employs over fifty faculty, and continues to play an important role in state-wide horticultural research and extension. This collection consists of glass negatives and lantern slides chiefly depicting various aspects of agriculture in North Carolina and buildings on the campus of N.C. State University. Subjects include agricultural extension work, agricultural research, farms and farm life, animal husbandry, botany, horticulture, and crop science. One set of slides shows the university's first nuclear reactor; another comprises song slides that were presumably used at 4-H meetings or camps in the state. Many of the slides are hand-colored. Also included in the collection are photographic prints made from some of the negatives, manuscript material from the original storage containers, and examples of the original storage envelopes. The North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts was founded as the state's land-grant institution in 1887, and formally opened its doors two years later. Renamed the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1917, the school became part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina (later the University of North Carolina System) in 1932. The institution was restyled North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1963, and two years later renamed North Carolina State University (officially the North Carolina State University at Raleigh).
