Charles M. Horton (1912 - 1987) was a furniture designer in Statesville, North Carolina. He graduated from Statesville High School and never studied furniture design in a formal setting. He began his career working with his brother and his father, Fred Horton. As his father's successor, he became a free-lance furniture designer in one of the most prosperous furniture manufacturing centers in the country. He designed individual pieces and suites for manufacturers throughout the Southeast. Among his clients were Lexington Chair Company and Burlington Furniture Company in North Carolina, Pulaski Furniture in Virginia, Trogdon Furniture in Georgia, and Williams Furniture Corporation in South Carolina. Henry Brower Smith (1917-1992) was a chemical engineer from Durham, North Carolina. After a career that included positions as director of research at General Foods Corporation and vice president of Armour Grocery Products, he was a professor of chemical engineering, associate dean of engineering, and then vice provost and dean for research at North Carolina State University from 1965 to 1983. The collection provides information about Harrelson's military career, 1917-1919; his tenure as a faculty member and administrator at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), 1919-1929 and 1933-1953; and his service as director of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, 1929-1933. The Leslie N. Boney Architectural Papers document the work of Wilmington, North Carolina, architects Leslie N. Boney Sr., and Leslie N. Boney Jr. from projects done in conjunction with architect James F. Gause in the 1920s through projects of Boney Architects, Inc., in the 1980s. Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996. The bulk of these papers document the corporate activities of the North Carolina Farm Bureau between 1936 and 1999. The North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation, North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, North Carolina Farm Bureau Service Company, and North Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association are all represented in the documents of this collection. Also, a substantial amount of material testifies to the activities of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Women's Committee. Formats include correspondence, corporate documents, publications, financial ledgers, legal documents and transcripts, scrapbooks, photographs, film reels, audio recordings, and miscellaneous artifacts. Organized in 1936 as a chapter of the American Farm Bureau, the North Carolina Farm Bureau was created to be a grassroots organization that would give farmers a unified voice on agricultural issues. Its Women's Committee was established in 1942. In 1953, the North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company was established. Beginning in 1962, the North Carolina Farm Bureau pioneered creation of a group purchase program that was managed by the North Carolina Farm Bureau Service Company. The following year, the North Carolina Farm Bureau further expanded with the establishment of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association. Because of the organization's involvement in legal and legislative matters, a Legal Foundation for the North Carolina Farm Bureau was created in 1983. In 1987, a Political Action Committee was also added. Educational programs of the Farm Bureau include the R. Flake Shaw Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders, and "Agriculture in the Classroom." Less

The Northup & O'Brien Architectural Records document the work of Northup & O'Brien, an architectural firm in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and its successors. The collection consists primarily of architectural drawings and job specifications, 1917-1980, as well as financial material, 1917-1956. The drawings represent the variety of projects undertaken by Northup & O'Brien in Winston-Salem as well other locations across the state, including residences, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches, and public and educational buildings. Most of the drawings are original, and characterize the different kinds of materials used for architectural drawing over the twentieth century. The firm of Northup & O'Brien was established in Winston-Salem by Willard Close Northup and Leet Alexander O'Brien in 1916. The partnership and its successor firms designed and constructed buildings in Winston-Salem and throughout North Carolina, as well as outside the state. In addition to residences--particularly fine homes--the partnership also specialized in commercial structures, schools, hospitals, churches, and municipal, county, and state government buildings. The Perry-Wynns Fish Company Records contain the business records, including financial, payroll, sales, and fishing information, of the Perry-Wynns Fish Company (alternatively known as the Perry-Wynns Fishery) of Colerain, North Carolina, on the Chowan River. The papers date from 1947 to 2002. The Perry-Wynns Fish Company was formed in 1952 when L. D. Perry and Leo Wynns formed a partnership to run a herring packing plant in Colerain, North Carolina on the western shore of the Chowan River. Incorporated in 1966, the company was, for decades, the largest freshwater herring fishery in the world, packing both herring and herring roe under the Tidewater Brand, the Bertie Brand and Chowan's Best. In September 2003, Hurricane Isabel destroyed nine of the fishery's eleven buildings, putting the company out of business. Less

The collection contains documents on the residence at 106 John Street, Louisburg, North Carolina, designed by G. Milton Small and originally owned by the Wheless Family. It includes construction and architectural contracts, land deeds, invoices (for furnishings, landscaping, and contractors), and drawings (plot plans, floor plans, construction plans, property and subdivision surveys), and photographs of the Wheless residence. Also included is 1 CD that contains 118 survey photographs taken by Laura A. W. Phillips for the National Register of Historic Places. In 1954, Thomas and Lois Wheless contracted with architect G. Milton Small to design a residence for them in Louisburg, North Carolina. The house is one story and has three bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. It is considered an excellent example of mid-twentieth century modern architecture in North Carolina. Less

The William Alfonso Withers Papers documents Withers' professional career and activities as well as his personal life. The collection contains materials on his employment as a professor of pure and agricultural chemistry at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts from 1889-1923, along with materials covering his employment at various other state, federal, and private organizations. It also contains materials on Withers' personal activities with extensive personal correspondence with friends and family. Withers received his A.B. and A.M. from Davidson College, and did graduate work at Cornell University. He was a Professor of Pure and Agricultural Chemistry at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts from 1889-1923 and served as Acting Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station from 1887 to 1899.
