This collection contains an article from Scientific American about the Bickford Family Knitting Machine. It dates to June 10, 1871. The Bickford Family Knitting Machine, patented in September 1867, allowed everyday users to knit items such as mats, shawls, trimmings, and blankets with relative ease, reduced time, and little advanced skill. It was also easy to transport and made very little noise. They were produced by the Bickford Knitting Machine Manufacturing Company of Brattleboro, Vermont. This collection is made up of correspondence, professional administrative papers, instructional materials, technical reprints, and research reports belonging to North Carolina State University emeritus professor Charles William Stuber, who conducted research in the use of molecular markers that aid in the identification and mapping of corn genes. Most of the collection contains reprints, papers, and articles authored by other scientists and collected Stuber. Nebraska native Charles William Stuber earned a B.S. in 1952 and an M.S. in 1961 at the University of Nebraska. He received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Experimental Statistics from North Carolina State University in 1965 and was a member of the genetics faculty at North Carolina State University from 1965 to 1998. The Dale E. Sayers papers document Sayers' career as a researcher and educator, from his work as an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley to his teaching and research career as a professor of physics at North Carolina State University. Sayers was a co-developer of the modern extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique, which, according to Sayers, "allows atomic structural information to be determined in complex systems." In addition to EXAFS, his research interests included x-ray absorption spectroscopy, amorphous materials, mammography technology, synchrotron radiation, and environmental science. Sayers' extensive planning work on the NC STAR Storage Ring Project (North Carolina Storage Rings for Advanced Research) is one of the main subjects documented here. Other research project files included in these papers are Joint Economic Development Initiative - Advanced Light Technologies (JEDI-ALT) and the Department of Defense's Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP). These research files also include information on Sayers involvement in projects with the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the Canadian Light Source (CLS), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems). Sayers was active professionally in and beyond N.C. State. He published more than 200 articles in journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Materials Research, Journal of Synchrotron Radiation, and Thin Solid Films. He was active in organizations such as International XAFS Society and the American Physical Society, was awarded a patent on his "Stable Silicide Electrical Contacts on Si" invention, presented invited talks and seminars at more than sixty national and international conferences, and served as a consultant for groups such as Mobil Research and Development. During his tenure at N.C. State, Sayers was involved in grant projects with institutions such as Exxon, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, Procter & Gamble, the United States Department of Agriculture, the United States Department of Energy, and the University of Connecticut. Included in this collection are papers from Sayers' colleague Rodney McCormick, also of the NC State Physics Department. Dale Edward Sayers began his studies at the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his bachelor's degree in physics. He continued his studies at the University of Washington, where he completed his master's and doctoral degrees in physics. Sayers was named assistant professor of physics at North Carolina State University in 1976, associate professor in 1979, and professor in 1984. The FabriCAD Collection documents the activities of FabriCAD Consulting, a company established by Alison Grudier Hardy in the 1990s to provide consulting services to companies in the fashion and textile industries interested in using Computer Aided Design (CAD). Materials in the collection include information on various CAD systems, articles about FabriCAD, CAD systems, the textile industry, company publications, and fabric samples of CAD printing. Reprints and papers used by George Hepting in preparation of his book Diseases of Forest and Shade Trees of the United States (1971). Also included in this collection are similar later reprints, reprints of Hepting's own articles, Hepting's resume, and a few other papers. George Henry Hepting (1907-1988) retired from the United States Forest Service as Chief Plant Pathologist at the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station in 1971. From 1967 through 1984 he served as Visiting Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and the School of Forest Resources at North Carolina State University. Hepting did research on heartrot diseases of forest trees; the impact of fire scars, basal wounds, and stump sprouts on infection and spread of decay in many species of trees; the mechanisms by which trees restrict the development of decay and discoloration in tree stems; fusarium wilt disease of Mimosa; the role of mating types in oak wilt fungus; fungal discolorations in felled timber and lumber of southern pines; the impact of discolorations and decay on the strength of wood veneers used in military aircraft; rust, twig, and foliage blights; pitch canker disease of southern pines; sweetgum blight; the ineffectiveness of actidione as a control for white pine blister rust; development of practical controls for annosus root rot and for management of nursery diseases with fumigant chemicals; cause of a serious dieback disease of pines in New Zealand; aspects of littleleaf disease of southern pines. This collection contains architectural drawings and specifications, 1928-1977, documenting the works of William Henley Deitrick and his successor, Guy E. Crampton. Included are Deitrick's competition winning design for Needham Broughton High School (1928), his modernist Carolina County Club (1948), the prize winning Dorton Arena (with Matthew Nowicki, 1950 to 1951), and public housing pojects for the Raleigh Housing Authority. Crampton's designs include several buildings for Elon College (1965), the Wake Forest College Stadium (1966), numerous projects for the Wachovia Bank & Trust Co., and many public school buildings. The specifications are for buildings designed by Guy E. Crampton and Associates, including the Wake Forest College Stadium and public schools. William Henley Deitrick was born in Danville, Virginia, in 1895. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1916. Then he worked as a high school principal for a year in Georgia. During World War I, Deitrick served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army . After the war, he worked as a building contractor from 1919 to 1922. He entered Columbia University, New York in 1922 and studied architecture there until 1924. In 1926 he began practicing architecture. During his professional career Deitrick earned many distinctions. He sold his firm to associate Guy E. Crampton upon his retirement in 1959. Guy Edwin Crampton, Jr., was born in Washington, D.C. on 19 September 1913. From 1934 to 1940 he was a draftsman in the Supervising Architect's Office of the Federal Works Agency. He graduated from George Washington University with a bachelor of architecture in 1939. Between 1940 and 1949 Crampton worked for several different architectural firms. In 1950 he became an associate of William Henley Deitrick and Associates. In 1959 the firm changed its name to Guy E. Crampton and Associates with Crampton as a general partner. Crampton retired in 1976. Less

The Jim E. Riviere papers contain research notebooks from experiments with the IPPSF (isolated perfused porcine skin flap), a novel in vitro alternative animal model for studies in cutaneous toxicology, dermatology, physiology, oncology, percutaneous drug absorption, and metabolism. Included as well are research notes from different projects and experiments involving pharmacology and toxicology, grant reports and study reports pertaining to Riviere's work with pharmacology and toxicology for North Carolina State University, the United States Department of Defense, the United States Army Medical Research Acquisition Agency, and several private corporations. The collection also contains copies of published articles, conference programs and computer-printed drafts of textbooks and textbook chapters written and co-written by Jim E. Riviere and his wife and co-researcher, Nancy A. Monteiro-Riviere, Lab Notebooks for IPPSF Department of Defense (including Laminin), and other Studies. As of January 2007, Jim E. Riviere was Burroughs Wellcome Fund Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology; Director, Center for Chemical Toxicology Research and Pharmacokinetics, College of Veterinary Medicine; and Director of the Biomathematics Program of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. His research interests relate to applying biomathematics to problems in toxicology, including the risk assessment of chemical mixtures, pharmacokinetics, absorption of drugs and chemicals across skin, and the food safety and pharmacokinetics of tissue residues in food producing animals. The collection dates range from 1891 to 1987, but the bullk of the material is from 1940-1965. The Lisa Finlay Papers contains materials documenting Finlay's interest and participation in both the animal rights and ecofeminist movements. Some items are related to general animal rights or philosophical issues, but the majority focus on ecofeminism or the intersection between feminism and animal rights. Included are a variety of published and unpublished written materials, as well as materials from various animal rights and ecofeminist groups and events and audiovisual materials. The bulk of these audiovisual materials are the only known video copies of the 1993 ANGFAR (A New Generation for Animal Rights) Conference. Lisa Finlay is an animal rights advocate with a specific interest in feminism. When she was a graduate student at North Carolina State University, animal rights activist Tom Regan served as a thesis advisor for her self-designed degree: "Forms of Oppression: Sexism, Racism, and Speciesism." As the coordinator and contact for the 1993 ANGFAR conference, Finlay was instrumental in the organization of this event. A long-time member of Feminists for Animal Rights (FAR), Finlay was hired as the organization's first director in 1994 and went on to serve the organization in a number of different capacities. Less

The Roy Samuel Ingle Papers, 1940-1985, contains correspondence and personal memorabilia related to Ingle's life as a student at North Carolina State College (later University), his service in the United State Army Air Corps during World War II, and his experience as a geological engineer. Also in the collection are Ingle's student pilot logbooks, ration books from World War II, photographs, and memoirs. Roy Samuel Ingle was born in 1918 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina.
