The Alexander Isley Papers, 1967-2020, contains materials related to Alexander Isley’s childhood, schooling, and career as a graphic designer at M&Co., Spy magazine, and Alexander Isley, Inc. These materials include design sketches and drafts, final design samples, financial records, correspondence, press clippings, school records and coursework, memorabilia, and a website. Alexander Isley (1961- ) is a graphic designer from Durham, North Carolina, who, as of 2019, is creative director of Alexander Isley, Inc. He holds a degree in Environmental Design from the School of Design at North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union in New York City. From 1984 to 1986 he was the senior designer at the New York City design firm M&Co., then in 1987 became the first full-time art director of Spy, the New York-based satirical monthly magazine. He left Spy in 1988 to start his own design firm, Alexander Isley Inc. Isley has received several design awards, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Medal in 2014. The Bill Baron Papers contain design sketches, photographs, architectural drawings, correspondence, and slides that relate to some of the graphic design, industrial design, and landscape architecture work that Bill Baron completed in the 1960s while he was a professor at the North Carolina State University School (now College) of Design. Work that is particulary well documented is Baron's design of the Tallywood Shopping Center sign and canopy in Fayetteville, and his design of the Aqua-Aid flotation device. The papers also relate to Baron's work on such notable projects as the North Carolina State Capital Plan, the Fayetteville Market Square, and the Whispering Pines Village. Baron worked on the Tallywood Shopping Center with landscape architect Richard Bell and architects MacMillan and MacMillan; on the North Carolina State Capital Plan with landscape architect Lewis Clarke; and on the Market Square development and Whispering Pines Village with landscape architect Richard Moore. Bill Baron was born in Chicago and studied Industrial Design at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign. Baron taught Industrial Design at North Carolina State University's School (now College) of Design in the 1960s, when the school was led by Dean Henry Kamphoefner. Baron is nationally recognized for his art, which has been displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and at the North Carolina Museum of Art. The Charles M. Ellertson Research and Study Collection on Typography contains books, serials (including a run of The Association of American University Presses Book and Jacket Show), booklets and leaflets on graphic design, typography, fonts, and graphic designers, and some papers related to Ellertson's work in typography. The collection also includes a set of Merganthaler Linotype negatives from Ellertson's early career. Materials range in date from 1956 to 2022. Charles M. Ellertson (1945-2022), a typographer and typesetter, co-founded Tseng Information Systems in Durham, NC in 1980 and was vice-president of the firm until its closure in 2021, setting type for university presses throughout the U.S. Using Fontographer and later FontLab, Charles created special characters and diacritics for non-Romanized languages; his work enabled the publication of Native American research and literature. The Gerald Orlando Theodore Erdahl Papers document Erdahl's military career, his work as a cartoonist, and his tenure as the Director of the North Carolina State College Student Union. It also contains materials relating to Erdahl's professional and civic involvement and leadership, as well as his personal and family life. Gerald Orland Theodore Erdahl (1916-1961) was graduate of the University of Wisconsin, 1940. Erdahl served as Director of the North Carolina State College Student Union, 1949-1961. The James Holcomb Collection of North Carolina State University College of Design Flyers, Brochures, and Posters contains ephemera including flyers, posters, brochures, mailers, and postcards. These materials were designed by North Carolina State University, School of Design (now College) students and faculty. The items publicized events such as exhibits, lectures, and classes. The Martha Scotford Research and Study Collection on Graphic Design contains materials from 1896 through 2010 including design works and ephemera, publications, files documenting Scotford’s projects, and design-related reference materials relating to graphic design, book design and typography. Martha Scotford was a professor of graphic design in the College of Design at North Carolina State University until 2013; she began as a visiting lecturer in Visual Design in 1981. She was raised in New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont, and received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Oberlin College in 1966 and both her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Graphic Design from Yale University in 1970. She has published numerous books related to design. In 2001, she spent five months in India as a Fulbright lecturer. In 2007 she received NC State University's Distance Education and Learning Technologies Gertrude Cox Special Merit Award. Martha Scotford donated this collection to the University to be used as a research and study collection for design and the history of design. Meredith Davis has been a professor of graphic design at North Carolina State University since 1989. She served for ten years as the chair of the Department of Graphic Design (now the Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design) and four years as head of the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Design program. Her research explores the ways in which design can be used in educational reform efforts in K-12 schools, and the relationship between design and cognition.
