This collection contains an article from Scientific American about the Bickford Family Knitting Machine. It dates to June 10, 1871. The Bickford Family Knitting Machine, patented in September 1867, allowed everyday users to knit items such as mats, shawls, trimmings, and blankets with relative ease, reduced time, and little advanced skill. It was also easy to transport and made very little noise. They were produced by the Bickford Knitting Machine Manufacturing Company of Brattleboro, Vermont. The Edenton Cotton Mill Collection is comprised of several dozen sheets of blueprints and two sets of specifications that document the selected phases of the planning and construction of the Edenton Cotton Mill in Edenton, North Carolina. There are also a few blueprints of mill village houses designed by the Aladdin Company. These materials were originally part of the North Carolina Buildings Collection (MC 00225). The Edenton cotton mill and mill village represent a rare example of industrial construction in North Carolina's coastal plain. Designed by nationally known mill engineers, C.R. Makepeace and Company of Rhode Island, the mill structure itself features popular Italianate elements, while the mass of the building expresses the functional requirements of a cotton mill. The architecture of the mill village reflects national trends in the Colonial revival style of the supervisors' and engineers' houses, and in the "operatives'" prefabricated houses from the Aladdin Company of Bay City, Michigan. Other operatives' houses reflect vernacular practices common to North Carolina's rural and urban landscape. Less

This collection includes an Engraving from Denis Diderot's Encyclopedia ("Encyclopedie"), entitled "Aiguiller-Bonnetier" ("Needle and Cap Makers"), by engraver Robert Benard. Denis Diderot was a prominent philosopher during the Enlightenment. His most famous work was the Encyclopedia ("Encyclopedie"), a massive, multi-volume compilation of world knowledge richly illustrated with engravings. The Encyclopedia was groundbreaking in its inclusion of the "mechanical arts," or crafts and trades, as exemplified in this engraving of the Needle and Cap Makers. This engraving depicts a workshop with the textiles tools and equipment shown individually underneath. It was engraved by Robert Benard, a French printmaker born in 1734. Less

Etude des Files is a bound manuscript volume containing handwritten notes in French about thread, with samples of thread and notes related to each sample. The largest part of the book is about silk but there are also pages on cottons, flax, hemp, ramie, jute, wools, and other threads. At head of title is written "Cours de tissage." A bookplate on the inside front cover says that this book was given to Wullschleger by "Th. Bon, professeur de Théorie de Tissage, Ecole industrielle de Courconig[?]" Arthur Wullschleger studied weaving in Lyon, France, in 1899-1900. He may have been from d'Aarbourg, Switzerland. Less

Founded in 1944, The Institute of Textile Technology (ITT) joins individual companies in collective support of a private educational and research institution. Through its alliance with North Carolina State University College of Textiles, these institutions offer industry support unrivaled around the globe. ITT maintained educational scholarships for undergraduates and graduates to fund students and research in literary and scientific branches of learning. This collection contains sample books of fabrics, yarns, weaving patterns, and other textiles and textile-related material. The majority of these materials are in German. The collection also includes manuals and correspondence related to Qiana nylon, a polyamide fabric developed by DuPont in the 1960s. Most materials related to Qiana nylon are in English and date to the early 1970s. Jakob Rutishauser was a textile engineer who immigrated to North Carolina from Switzerland. Less

This collection contains notebooks created by James V. Pomeroy. Included are pattern samples, textile samples, and instructional illustrations from Pomeroy's time at the Philadelphia Textile School. While the materials span the time period 1898 to 1901, most documents date from 1899 to 1900. Topics covered include textiles, textile fabrics and machinery, carding, spinning, and weaving. James Voorhees Pomeroy entered into the Philadelphia Textile School (established 1884) in 1899 as part of the First Year Regular Day Class. Pomeroy received honorable mentions for the Silver Medal for General Excellence and for the Bronze Medal for Best Results in Color Harmony and Figured Design in 1899. In 1900, upon entering into the Second Year Day Class, Pomeroy was awarded the Prize Scholarship for the 1900-1901 school year. On June 6, 1901, he received his diploma from the textile school. He also earned the New England Cotton Manufacturers' Association Medal for General Excellence for Entire Course the same year. Less

This collection is comprised of notes and records of the National Textile Center from 1992-2000. These records include correspondence, meeting and committee notes, budget proposals, and funding information. The National Textile Center (NTC) is a clustered research consortium of four universities--North Carolina State University, Auburn University, Clemson University, and Georgia Institute of Technology--located in the heart of the U.S. textile industries manufacturing base. The institutions share human resources, equipment and facilities to serve the Fiber/Textile/Fabricated Products/Retail complex. The Center provides the knowledge base for the continuing viability of the U. S. industry through innovative research and collaborative partnerships. These records contain files pertaining to the activities and administration of the North Carolina State University Burlington Textiles Library including correspondence and reference files kept by the library, clippings, brochures, and other information about topics related to the College of Textiles. They also include slide sets, a portrait of Wallace W. Riddick, Jr., the Dedication Plaque for the Burlington Textiles Library, the Quick Response Collection, Textile World Charts, and panels from past exhibits. Materials range in date from 1911 to 2010. From 1988 to 2013, the Burlington Textiles Library was located in room 4411 of the College of Textiles complex on the Centennial Campus at North Carolina State University. The Library provided services to the faculty and staff, students, and NC State Centennial Campus community and university affiliates. The Library supported the curriculum and research programs in textile chemistry, textile materials and management, and fiber and polymer science. This collection is comprised entirely of GEDRT conference notes and records from 1992-2000; the conferences were held throughout the world. GEDRT (Groupe Europeen d'echange d'experiences sur la Direction de la Recherche Textile) is an international textiles organization. The organization describes itself as "an exclusive club or association the membership of which consists of some 40 plus individually elected personal members chosen among European professors and directors of universities and research institutions in textiles....The aim of the association is to exchange views on subjects difficult to deal with within international congresses and which preoccupy primarily university professors and leaders of research organisations in running their internal policies as well as the external cooperation with other institutions especially industry." This collection includes documents and hosiery samples from the Kellwood Company of Siler City, North Carolina. Robert McKinley, who worked at the Kellwood Company for ten years, was in possession of the documents found in this collection. However, many documents, patents, agreements, and financial records originally belonged to Robert M. Matthews. The collection contains both business-related documents as well as documents, photos, slides, and samples pertaining specifically to the garments themselves. There are many articles within the collection. The bulk of the material comes from the 1980s about twenty years after the company was established. Robert McKinley began by working for Sears as a buyer in New York and Chicago. McKinley worked at Kellwood Company in Siler City, North Carolina for ten years. Robert M. Matthews worked for Robert McKinley. During his career at Kellwood Company, he was able to acquire two patents regarding hosiery and panty-hose creation and material during early 1970s.Kellwood Company was formed in 1961 due to the merger of Sears and other companies. Kellwood company still exists today and is acquired by a Hong Kong-based investor group. Less

The Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill Collection of Papers and Artifacts contains exhibit labels, a drawing, Articles of Agreement, and an iron spindle, all pertaining to the Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill, the first textile mill in North Carolina. Materials range in date from 1813 to 1871, with some documentation dating from 1991. The first textile mill in North Carolina was built before 1813 in Lincoln County, 1.5 miles east of Lincolnton. Michael Schenck built the mill and later partnered with Absolom Warlick to build a second in 1816. Through the 1820s and 1830s the profitable operation of the Schenck mills was a model to many more in North Carolina. The Schenck-Warlick Mill firmly established the Southern Textile industry. Less

The Subhash K. Batra papers contain correspondence, publication drafts, and reprints of published articles reflecting Batra’s work on nonwovens manufacturing technology and textile and fiber systems. Dr. Subhash Kumar Batra began his education in India and earned advanced degrees from MIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States. He joined the NC State University textiles faculty in 1977 and served as the director of the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center (now the Nonwovens Institute) at NC State University from 1991 to 1999. Dr. Batra is now Professor Emeritus at the College of Textiles. Less
