These models represent three buildings designed by architect George Matsumoto during the years 1955-1960 while he was still a professor of architecture at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University). These models were created for the exhibit "Simplicity, Order, and Discipline: The Work of George Matsumoto, FAIA" that was displayed at NC State University's Visual Arts Gallery (more recently known as the Gregg Museum), April 10 - June 28, 1997. The Arthur Ralph Cogswell Papers, 1966-2006, document the professional activities of Cogswell and his architectural firm. The collection is arranged into the following series: project files, office records, personal papers, and electronic media. The project files primarily contain photographic prints, negatives, or slides of individual projects, as well as reduced plans. The office records contain client lists, clippings, marketing materials, personnel materials, and photographs. The personal papers contain materials relating to the Cogswell Family Association, Inc., a non-profit genealogical organization. The electronic media series contains compact discs with digital photographs of various projects. Arthur Cogswell was born on October 29, 1930, in Jacksonville, Florida. He received a B.A. in drama from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953 and B.Arch. from North Carolina State College in 1959. He began his architecture practice in 1962, and in 1967 formed a partnership with Werner Hausler. The Chapel Hill firm received many awards for groundbreaking modernist designs, and Cogswell was known for his modern houses. In 1974 he was named a Fellow of the America Institute of Architects, and at the time he was the youngest architect to have received that honor. Cogswell died on September 29, 2010. Less

George Franklin Hackney (1905-1997) graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in Architectural Engineering in 1927 and opened an architectural firm in Durham, North Carolina, focusing on high end residences. He later taught at Duke University. He initially partnered with Charles Knott, and later continued his practice as Sears, Hackney, Keener, and Williams. The Harris and Pyne Records contain drawings, project files, photographs, and personal files documenting the professional activities of the Harris and Pyne architectural and engineering firm and its predecessor firms H. Raymond Weeks, Inc., Atwood and Weeks, and Atwood and Nash. The collection is arranged into four series: Drawings, Project Files, Photographic Materials, and Personal Files. Drawings include original pencil drawings, blueprints, and other reproductions. Project files includes various materials relating to projects, including a scrapbook, newsclippings, a financial recordbook, and supplemental documents to projects. Photographic materials includes professional black and white photographs of projects. Original documentation for many of the buildings and projects of these architecture firms is no longer in existence. Lastly, personal files include certificates, membership cards, biographical notes and obituary notes. Harris and Pyne was an architectural and engineering firm in Durham, North Carolina, from about 1958 to the 1990s, headed by engineer Wilton E. Harris and architect George C. Pyne, Jr. Its predecessor firms were T. C. Atwood (prior to 1920), Atwood & Nash, Architects and Engineers (early 1920s-early 1930s), Atwood & Weeks (1930s-1942), and H. Raymond Weeks, Inc. This collection is comprised entirely of 8 blueprints of the Colonial Revival Leak House on 909 North Elm Street in the Fisher Park neighborhood of Greensboro, North Carolina. The original owners were Minnie Lyon and Frank Leak, who married in 1901. The plans are undated, but the house was built in 1913. J. H. Hopkins, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, was a leading architect in Greensboro, North Carolina, from approximately 1905 to 1920. This collection is comprised of blueprints from May 1961 of the Charles Jeffrey Residence located on 4901 Rembert Drive in Raleigh, North Carolina. The architect was John T. Caldwell, and the home is located in the Brookhaven Development Lots. John T. Caldwell, AIA, was an architect who practiced in the Raleigh, North Carolina, area. Caldwell received degrees in architecture from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1953 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1954. The Leif Valand Architectural Papers consists of architectural drawings and small number of related items (correspondence, awards, and others). The blueprints of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church are of particular significance; Valand designed this African-American church in 1963. There is also a set of blueprints (18) for house plan types for Cameron Village. There are nine blueprints and one architectural drawing dating from 1951 of Mr. Everett Case's residence located in Cameron Village, Raleigh, North Carolina. Everett Case (1900-1966) was the North Carolina State University basketball coach from 1946 to 1964. Case led the Wolfpack to win nine straight conference titles in his first nine years, six straight Southern Conference titles, and four Atlantic Coast Conference titles. Leif Valand (1915-1985) was a prominent Raleigh architect from the late 1940s to the 1970s. He was born in Norway and immigrated to New York as a boy. Valand attended the Pratt Institute in New York City and then practiced architecture in Scarsdale, New York, prior to moving to Raleigh in the late 1940s to work on the Cameron Village Shopping Center. In his heyday, Valand was the most prolific architect in Raleigh. Some of his other works include the Cameron Village Office Buildings and Apartments, Enloe High School, the Federal Building on New Bern Ave, North Ridge Country Club, North Hills Shopping Center, the Velvet Cloak Hotel, the Central Raleigh YMCA, the State Administration Building, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, the Raleigh Women's Club, and many private residences. The MacMillan and MacMillan Architectural Papers, 1919, 1950-2010, document the professional activities of Dan and Frank MacMillan and their architectural firm. The collection consists of architectural drawings with various iterations of designs, blueprints, construction documents, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and related materials. MacMillan and MacMillan’s projects include mostly private residences, with a small number of subdivision developments. Also included in the collection are drawings of landscape architecture projects by Richard C. Bell, done in collaboration with MacMillan and MacMillan projects. There is also a series of photographs from the period (1950-1952) in which the Dorton Arena was under construction; Dan MacMillan worked on the Dorton Arena as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction. Dan (1921- ) and Frank (d. 1991) MacMillan were born in Fayetteville, North Carolina and were principals in the MacMillan and MacMillan architectural firm. Dan MacMillan graduated from North Carolina State University in 1948 and worked for several years with the architect Jim Webb and then as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction on Raleigh’s Dorton Arena. In 1952 Dan MacMillan founded his firm, Dan MacMillan Architect and Associates in Fayetteville. After his brother, Frank, received his architecture license in the early 1950s Dan partnered with him and the firm was renamed MacMillan and MacMillan. Frank MacMillan died in 1991. The MacMillans had also partnered with other architects during their career, including Brian Shawcroft. Less

This subgroup contains materials relating to the Home of the Month project which ran in the Raleigh News and Observer. Files include both digital and print versions of articles, entry forms, plans, and photographs. Materials range in date from 2005 to 2010. The Home of the Month project was a collaboration between the North Carolina State University College of Design’s Home Environments Design Initiative and the Raleigh News and Observer. The aims of the project were to educate and inspire the public about the benefits of good home designs, inform the public about the value architects bring to home building, support and expand ideas of what a home can be for potential homeowners, represent diversity for architecturally designed homes (in price, size, design approach, values and priorities), and support a growing residential market and residential architectural community. All of the homes selected were designed and built by North Carolina architects in or after 2000. The first article in the series was published in January 2006. Less

The Reginald D. Tillson Landscape Architecture Papers contains drawings, sketches, specifications, correspondence, notes, plant guides, and other materials that document the landscape design work of Tillson from the 1920s to the 1970s. The collection also contains an oral history interview of his son, David Tillson, in 2016. These materials encompass Tillson's work as a landscape architect, creating designs for small-scale residential locations, large-scale private subdivision, public parks, public housing projects, schools, churches, and hospitals. The collection represents Tillson's work throughout the southeastern United States, with the majority of the projects based in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region. The earlier materials from 1906 to 1928 demonstrate Tillson's beginnings in landscape architecture while gaining knowledge and experience in the field. The bulk of the collection covers Tillson's career as a practicing landscape architect between 1928 and 1969. The collection ranges from 1906 to 2016. Reginald D. Tillson was a landscape architect in High Point, North Carolina, who designed significant improvements to the built environment of High Point and other communities of the Piedmont Triad area. His early career focused on residential design work for the wealthy and upper-middle-class residents of High Point, which at the time was a prosperous center of the textile and furniture industries. In the 1950s and following decades, as North Carolina's population grew and planning and development trends evolved, Tillson's work grew in scale and complexity. He designed dozens of subdivisions and grounds for schools, churches, and hospitals. Overall, his career provides a unique view into planning and landscape architecture practice in the Southeast during decades of immense technological and social change. Less

In doing so, he collected a number of architectural plans and project files that comprise the Richard Hall Architectural Drawings Collection.
