The Clyde F. Smith Papers contain literature, reprints, articles and books primarily pertaining to the insect family Aphididae, of the Order Homoptera. Two books, Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World (1972) and An Annotated List of Aphididae (Homoptera) of North America (1978) are indexes of the papers. Research materials consist of literature by noted authors from around the world who study aphids, their life cycles, reproduction variables, climate conditions, host plants and biological and chemical control. This collection is an extension of the Zeno Metcalf Collection. Also included are index cards on various Aphididae, which include an annotated generic and specific index to all literature cited in Smith's 1972 Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World, a host plant index indicating the aphids associated with each host and the source citing this association, and an index of aphid-parasitoids associations. Clyde F. Smith joined the faculty of the North Carolina State College Entomology Department in September 1939. He served as Head of N.C. State's Entomology Department from 1950 to 1964. Smith received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University (then Utah State Agricultural College). He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1939. Reprints and papers used by George Hepting in preparation of his book Diseases of Forest and Shade Trees of the United States (1971). Also included in this collection are similar later reprints, reprints of Hepting's own articles, Hepting's resume, and a few other papers. George Henry Hepting (1907-1988) retired from the United States Forest Service as Chief Plant Pathologist at the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station in 1971. From 1967 through 1984 he served as Visiting Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and the School of Forest Resources at North Carolina State University. Hepting did research on heartrot diseases of forest trees; the impact of fire scars, basal wounds, and stump sprouts on infection and spread of decay in many species of trees; the mechanisms by which trees restrict the development of decay and discoloration in tree stems; fusarium wilt disease of Mimosa; the role of mating types in oak wilt fungus; fungal discolorations in felled timber and lumber of southern pines; the impact of discolorations and decay on the strength of wood veneers used in military aircraft; rust, twig, and foliage blights; pitch canker disease of southern pines; sweetgum blight; the ineffectiveness of actidione as a control for white pine blister rust; development of practical controls for annosus root rot and for management of nursery diseases with fumigant chemicals; cause of a serious dieback disease of pines in New Zealand; aspects of littleleaf disease of southern pines. He also directed pioneering research on the role of ozone and other photo-chemical oxidants as causes of diseases in forests. Less

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Plant Disease and Insect Clinic Records contain materials on plant samples sent to the clinic, clinic lab records, publications, bibliographies, and slides. Materials range in date from the 1930s to 1999. The Plant Disease and Insect Clinic at NC State University provides plant disease diagnostic and insect identification services to help the people of North Carolina grow healthy plants and crops. Homeowners, gardeners, landscape architects, and farmers may submit samples to the clinic for analysis. Specialists will then recommend ways to treat or prevent the problem.The Plant Disease and Insect Clinic was established as the Plant Disease Clinic in the Department of Plant Pathology at NC State in 1951. With the addition of entomologists from the Department of Entomology in 1970, it became the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic. The North Carolina Agricultural Extension and Research Services Photograph collection includes photographs and negatives relating to areas of animal husbandry, animal science, the agriculture school, 4-H Youth Development clubs, forest resources, crop and soil science, the extension service, insect management, and farm forestry. While each program has its own distinctions, all are involved in the research and education of North Carolina individuals, families, and communities. Programs in animal husbandry was established in the 1920s and later became the Department of Animal Science.
