The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Plant Disease and Insect Clinic Records contain materials on plant samples sent to the clinic, clinic lab records, publications, bibliographies, and slides. Materials range in date from the 1930s to 1999. The Plant Disease and Insect Clinic at NC State University provides plant disease diagnostic and insect identification services to help the people of North Carolina grow healthy plants and crops. Homeowners, gardeners, landscape architects, and farmers may submit samples to the clinic for analysis. Specialists will then recommend ways to treat or prevent the problem.The Plant Disease and Insect Clinic was established as the Plant Disease Clinic in the Department of Plant Pathology at NC State in 1951. With the addition of entomologists from the Department of Entomology in 1970, it became the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic. This collection contains the records from the North Carolina State University Libraries' preservation activities. The major issues addressed were mold, stolen pages/materials, water damage, disaster planning, the preservation of the school newspaper, The Technician, and acid-free paper printing. The collection includes memos, letters, meeting minutes and agendas, handwritten notes, supplemental information, pamphlets and other miscellaneous materials including a list from 1968 of stolen and missing materials. In 1982 a Preservation Committee was established within the North Carolina State University's libraries. The Committee had a last meeting on 25 October 1988, wrote a report addressing concerns, and subsequently disbanded. A new structure, the Preservation Department, emerged shortly thereafter with subcommittees such as Preservation Education and Disaster Planning. The Preservation Department's stated mission is to maintain and preserve collections and the information they contain in viable and accessible formats. Less

The Southeast Dairy Foods Research Center (SDFRC), founded in 1988, is one of six national centers funded and managed by Dairy Management, Inc., a non-profit organization formed in 1995 by the National Dairy Board and the United Dairy Industry Association. The SDFRC supports basic and applied research relating to dairy products and nutrition, specifically in regard to the processing of milk into dairy products with improved health, safety, and quality. The Senior Design Center (SDC) was created in 1994 to provide Computer Science seniors with a value-added capstone course resulting in a final project. This collection contains publications, workshop notebooks, articles, conference brochures, curriculum materials, and correspondence documenting the activities of the NC State University Science House from 1986 to 2015, with the bulk of the materials from 1991 to 2015. A significant portion of the collection contains files from the office of David Haase and Sharon Schulze, former Directors of the Science House. The Science House is a project based at North Carolina State University. It sponsors teacher training programs, curriculum development, web-based experiments for use in K-12 classrooms, long-term loans of laboratory equipment, summer student research programs, and community outreach. The Science House became a national model for the interaction of university science departments and K-12 students and teachers. It began as the primary learning outreach program of NC State’s College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and its mission has been to increase student enthusiasm for science and mathematics by partnering with teachers and schools to promote hands-on, inquiry-based learning. It engages faculty and students at NC State University and other institutions to enrich teachers’ content knowledge and to help students visualize careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. The Science House has existed since 1991, and it is located in Centennial Campus with 8,400 square feet of classrooms, offices, a teaching laboratory, and a computer-learning center as well as six satellite locations throughout North Carolina. Materials range in dates from 1962 to 1991. The North Carolina State University Commencement Advisory Committee was established at North Carolina State College (later, University) in or before 1962. The Commencement Advisory Committee was renamed the Commencement Committee in or before 1989. The committee is charged with the responsibility of making a continuous review of the scheduling and programming of the various exercises held at commencement time, particularly in regard to the form and content of the commencement exercise itself. The committee is also charged with making recommendations to the Chancellor concerning all of these matters, including speakers. The committee is still active as of 2011. Less

Materials range in date from 1958 to 1962. The North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) Land-Grant Centennial took place in 1962, marking the hundredth anniversary of land-grant colleges and universities. The centennial was celebrated at both the national and state level, with efforts beginning in or before 1959. The NCSC Land-Grant Council was responsible for events throughout 1961 and 1962 relating to the centennial. Rudolph Pate acted as Chairman of the council. Less

North Carolina State University's University Government Committee Records include memos, reports, drafts and letters documenting the work of at the committee. The most prominent aspect of that work was the establishment of the Faculty Senate and the refinement of mechanisms for faculty representation in University academic administration during the years 1952-1974. There are also a single folder of materials relating to an earlier iteration of the Committee and its 1946 report, and a folder of documents from the mid-1980s regarding faculty status of librarians. Aside from this folder, the records do not document the Committee's activities after 1974, although the Committee appears to remain in existence up to the present (August 2011). A College Committee on Government and Administration was formed in 1945 to survey the governmental structure of the then North Carolina State College. It issued a report and appears to have disbanded the following year. In 1952 a Committee on College Government was formed to recommend "an instrument of faculty government." Based on its recommendations, a Faculty Senate was instituted on a three-year trial basis in 1954, and the Committee was charged with observing the faculty government and make recommendations for its improvement. The trial period was extended an additional three years in 1957, and in 1960 the Committee recommended that the Senate be established on a permanent basis. The Committee continued to observe faculty government, and made additional recommendations. Its name was changed to the University Government Committee in 1967. The committee was abolished in 2006 and its duties are now handled by the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate. Less

The University Planning Committee Records contain meeting agendas and minutes, memos, calendars, reports, and other documents produced by and about the North Carolina State University, University Planning Committee from 1948 to 1991 with a gap from 1953 to 1983. While the purpose of the committee was to plan the development of the university, the contents within the collection are primarily about the committee itself. According to the contents of the collection, the North Carolina State University, University Planning Committee was meant to develop university-wide, long-range goals that serve as guidelines for the development of departments, colleges, schools, and administrative units. These goals were related to research, graduate education, diversity, and several other subtopics. The earliest documentation from 1948 calls the entity the Planning Committee of the School of Engineering of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering at the University of North Carolina, indicating that the committee was originally formed only for the School of Engineering and later expanded to serve the university as a whole. There is no record of when this committee began or who started it; from the collection, it is clear that it existed in some form as of 1948. The University Planning Committee appears to have existed as late as 2005 but in the present, as of 2012, it has been replaced by the Strategic Planning Committee started in 2010 by Chancellor Randy Woodson. This committee serves the same functions as the University Planning Committee. Less

The North Carolina State University, Division of Academic and Student Affairs, Department of Performing Arts and Technology Records contain office files, audio recordings of various performances made by groups associated with the Music Department, programs from performances, news releases and newspaper clippings, and files pertaining to the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild. Materials range in date from 1901 to 2023. The Department of Music provided educational and performance opportunities for student and community participants through a variety of musical experiences and academic courses. It also served as a cultural resource for the university and the greater community through performances and presentations offered by NC State University students, student and community groups, and by University faculty. In 2023, the Department of Performing Arts and Technology was formed, unifying arts entrepreneurship, dance, music, and music technology under the same department. Less

The North Carolina State University, Division of Student Affairs, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Records contain correspondence, reports, memoranda, committee meeting notes, and artifacts from Evelyn Q. Reiman, former Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. These materials range in date from 1955 to 2012. The Division of Student Affairs at North Carolina State University provided programs and services for students and the larger community to enhance quality of life, facilitate intellectual, ethical and personal growth, and create a culture which engenders respect for human diversity. Through these activities the Division of Student Affairs support student learning with the principle of “Students First.” In 2011, the Division of Student Affairs merged with the Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs to become the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA). This collection contains announcements, annual reports, applications, architectural drawings and specifications, brochures, bulletins, constitutions, contracts, correspondence, handbooks, manuals, membership lists, minutes, programs, scrapbooks, time reports, and work plans. The records document the activities of the office from 1903 to 1989. From 1908 to 1974, the office of Religious Affairs was nearly synonymous with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), as the records indicate. Hence, the collection also includes the records of the Danforth Chapel from 1955 to 1976, the International Student Center from 1955 to 1965, and the Self-Help Bureau from 1932 to 1941. The Office of Religious Affairs grew out of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the leadership of Edward S. King, who served North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) through the YMCA from 1919 to 1955. The campus branch of the YMCA was established in 1889 and was the site of the following activities and events: regular Sunday services; Bible study classes; a published montly paper; a handbook for freshmen and prospective students; speakers and discussion groups; a game room for students; a barbershop; and the Self-Help Bureau, which helped students secure employment while in college. The YMCA branch existed on campus until 1982. Less

The records document the activities of University Dining from 1972 to 1998 and are arranged in alphabetical order by subject. University Dining offers a variety of on-campus dining options. Students can choose from all-you-can eat dining halls, several fast-food chains, convenience stores, and a restaurant. University Catering, a branch of University Dining, provides specialty food service to hundreds of functions throughout the North Carolina State University campus each year. The General Faculty Meeting Records are primarily comprised of the minutes from meetings held by the President, later Chancellor, and faculty at North Carolina State University. The minutes cover all aspects of running the university, and include discussions of the curriculum, organization of the academic calendar, finances, requirements for admittance and withdrawal, scheduling for the school year, and issues between students and professors, among many other topics. Also included in the collection are general faculty bylaws and a small amount of correspondence and resolutions. Materials date from 1889 to 1980. Alexander Holladay, J.R. Chamberlain, W.F. Massey, W.A. Withers, D.H. Hill Jr., and J.H. Kinealy comprised the entire administration of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts when the faculty met for the first time on Oct. 13, 1889. Alexander Quarles Holladay was the first chief executive of the (then) college. In 1889, Holladay applied to the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts for the position of professor of English, but the Board of Trustees appointed him as the first college president instead. President Holladay and the faculty met regularly to discuss all matters of running the college, including any issues with the student body, which was only 50 students at the time. Holladay served the institution until failing health forced his retirement in 1899. He died in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1909. Less

Materials range in date from 1889 to 2007. The Chancellor is the chief administrative and executive officer, leader and spokesperson of North Carolina State University. The Chancellor defines the scope and authority of faculties, councils, committees, and officers of North Carolina State University. The Office of the Chancellor retains authority in faculty and EPA personnel, student matters, contracts, leases, and other agreements, and the acquisition and disposition of property. Less

This collection is artificial, and has been maintained by Special Collections staff. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931 the College greatly reworked its curricula as it underwent consolidation. Along with North Carolina College for Women and the University of North Carolina, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina,. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system, having received university status, and, after some controversy, assumed its current name in 1965. As of 2007, N.C. State had a student body of nearly 30,000, nearly two thousand faculty, and research and program expenditures of over $440 million. Less
