The Banks Talley Papers consists of personal and professional papers of Dr. Banks C. Talley, Jr. This collection contains correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, agendas, and other documents dated from 1922-2012, though the bulk of the materials are from 1969-1983. The professional papers are from Dr. Talley's position as Dean of Students and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at NC State University, and from his position as executive assistant to North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt. Included are two diaries kept by Talley during the time that he worked for the governor. Banks C. Talley, Jr., 1926-2017, was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, in 1926. After military service in World War II, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a B.A. in history (1950), an M.A. (1956), and a Ph.D in education (1966). In 1951 he became assistant dean of students at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). He later served as coordinator and director of student activities, associate dean and dean of student affairs, and finally vice chancellor for student affairs, beginning in 1974. The Brian Shawcroft Papers, 1958-2017, contain drawings and other materials documenting the professional activities of modernist architect Brian Shawcroft and associated architecture firms Holloway-Reeves; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames; Environmental Planning Associates; Shawcroft-Taylor; and McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft Associates. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, professional files, photographic materials, project records, and slides. Drawings include original drawings, reproductions, and CAD printouts of process (or design) drawings and construction documents such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Professional files include a list of completed projects, reproductions of photographs of projects, and supplemental materials to projects, Shawcroft’s curriculum vitae, and awards. Photographic materials include black-and-white and color prints and photographs of projects. Most photographs were taken by Shawcroft. Brian Shawcroft, born in England in 1929, is a modernist architect. Shawcroft studied architecture at the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art in London from 1949 to 1953. In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following this, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked with various firms throughout his career. He is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Research Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. Contained in this collection are an NC State decal and football ticket from Charles "Les" Britt's years as a student at North Carolina State College (1950). Also included is a 2017 memoir Britt wrote for his children. In it he recounts his life and career, including his student years at NC State College (later NC State University) and his membership in Kappa Sigma fraternity. Charles Leslie "Les" Britt, Jr. (1930-2017), had a long career in aviation and aeronautical electronics. Working for General Electric, he oversaw the payload of the first successful Atlas missile launch at Cape Canaveral. In 1962, he joined Research Triangle Institute (RTI), where he researched and designed radar techniques, electronic systems, and large computer applications. In 1979, he founded the RTI Virginia Office, and worked with NASA, the FAA, and manufacturers to develop, test, and certify the lifesaving airborne wind shear radar detection system that became required for all U.S. commercial aircraft. He retired from RTI in 2006. Less

The Edward T. Funkhouser Photographs consists of color photographs, taken by Funkhouser, depicting the campus of North Carolina State University and nearby parts of Raleigh, North Carolina, 2001-2015. Also included are a few images of Fayetteville, NC, sites (Gen. Shelton statue, Veterans Park, Bragg Boulevard), 2014. Most of the photographs are digital images in JPG format. Edward Truman Funkhouser (1946- ) has been a professor of speech and communication at NC State University since 1977. He has also served as an administrator in the university’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a B.S. from Madison College, an M.A. from Memphis State University, and a Ph.D. from Ohio University. He has been the public address announcer for NC State football and women's basketball games. His interest in photography has resulted in the creation of thousands of images of the NC State campus; Raleigh, North Carolina; and other locales. Less

The John David Smith Papers document Dr. Smith's involvement in the establishment of the Public History degree program at NC State University. Included in this collection are his correspondence, notes, and minutes related to the classes he taught, conferences he attended, and committees of which he was a member. In addition to these materials, this collection includes newsletters, clippings, and articles he retained that were related to his work at NC State University and the background research he did while developing the Public History degree program. John David Smith has taught at Indiana University-Purdue University, the University of South Carolina, Southeast Missouri State University, and NC State University before accepting a position at UNC Charlotte. Prior to teaching, he graduated with both a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1973 and 1977 respectively. By the end of his NC State University career, which began in 1982, he rose through the ranks of the history department to graduate alumni distinguished professor of history and eventual director of the Master's in Public History program, specializing in the Civil War and the history of race relations in the United States. This collection contains oral histories gathered from Kannapolis, North Carolina, residents as well as persons associated with the North Carolina Research Campus. Interviews were conducted in 2008. These histories present a detailed picture of the transformation of work and community in Kannapolis. Kannapolis was once home to Cannon Mills, at one time the largest manufacturer of sheets and towels in the world. In 2003, the Pillowtex Corporation, the last owner of the textile company, closed its doors. This was the largest one-day layoff in North Carolina history. In December 2004, David Murdock purchased the former Cannon Mills Plant One at auction, and then in 2005 in partnership with the University of North Carolina system, he announced plans for a $1.5 billion scientific and economic revitalization project. The result is the North Carolina Research Campus, which houses biotechnology firms and partners them with North Carolina research universities. Through interviews with a variety of people, these oral histories chronicle changes in Kannapolis and the early development of the North Carolina Research Campus. Less

This collection contains three 8 inches x 10 inches photographs of North Carolina State College baseball players (1942) and one newsclipping about Bones McKinney, Wake Forest University basketball coach and former NC State basketball player. The same photographs appear in the 1942 Agromeck yearbook. Ralph Clyde Heath was a student at North Carolina State College (later called North Carolina State University) from 1940-1942, and he played on the baseball team.
