This collection is comprised of a manuscript that Chancellor Bruce Poulton wrote on the beginnings of the Centennial Campus at North Carolina State University. Also included are drafts and notes. Materials are in both paper and digital format and range in date from 2014 to 2015.

Biographical/historical note

Bruce Robert Poulton served as chancellor of North Carolina State University from 1982 to 1989. During his tenure, North Carolina State University expanded with the contract for a 750-acre area of land which was named Centennial Campus. A master plan for its development, which included conservational, educational, and recreational goals was implemented.There was also a major expansion of the university’s research budget and the establishment of substantial endowments. After stepping down as chancellor, Poulton was director of the NC State University’s Literacy Systems Center.

Born in Yonkers, New York, in 1928, Bruce Poulton was a dairy physiologist who earned three degrees from Rutgers University, including a Ph.D. in Endocrinology in 1956. Poulton served as Vice President of the University of Maine from 1971 to 1975, and Chancellor of the consolidated University of New Hampshire from 1975 to 1982. Poulton became the tenth Chancellor of North Carolina State University in 1982, and was the third scientist to lead the institution. He obtained Centennial Campus for the university, and developed a master plan for the new campus. During Poulton's tenure, the university's research budget experienced a major expansion, and a substantial endowment was established. After stepping down as Chancellor in 1989, Poulton became director of the NC State University’s Literacy Systems Center. He died on June 19, 2015.
