The Dennis Werner Collection of Seed Catalogs contains approximately 90 annual publications from W. Atlee Burpee & Co. and contains 17 annual publications of other nursery and seed companies, including Gurney's, Schell's, and Iowa Seed. The date span is 1883 to 2013, but there are some gaps. In addition to the annual catalogs, the collection contains such ephemeral materials as envelopes, order forms, inserts about products, price lists, money order forms, catalog request forms, and other materials. Dennis Werner, a professor in the Horticultural Science at North Carolina State Univeristy, has collected historical seed catalogs (primarily Burpee Seed) throughout his career. W. Atlee Burpee (1858-1915) began a mail-order company in the 1870s, and he experimented with selective breeding and hybridization for the improvement of animals and plants. By the 1890s Burpee had became the largest seed company in the world. The business's annual catalog (begun by 1881) was an important marketing tool, and it played a significant role in the company's success. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century other nurseries and seed companies also became famous, in part, because of their catalogs. Seven loom catalogs, 1932 - 1949, and a volume of labelled photographs of sections of looms, from the Draper Corporation for the Textile School at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University), Raleigh, N.C. The catalogs each contain a copy of a loom order, followed by a detailed list of parts and labelled photographs of portions of the looms. The orders are dated 1937 Jan. 15 - 1949 Oct. 31. The Draper Corporation, based in Hopedale, Massachusetts, was incorporated in 1916, but predecessor companies had been manufacturing loom parts and other textile items, including temples and spindles, in Hopedale since the early 1800s. The Milton M. Leonard papers, 1934-1990, contains Dr. Milton Moot Leonard's research files and research papers written by him documenting the contributions he made during his years as a veterinarian in Asheville, North Carolina. Also included are medical pamplets, catalogs, animal x-rays, business correspondences, animal vendor catalogs, NC State University vet school catalogs, and black and white photos. Dr. Milton Moot Leonard (1893-1984) opened a veterinary practice in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1914. Active in veterinary circles, Leonard became the president of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA) in 1917 and served in every office of the association. In 1957 Dr. Leonard was named Veterinarian of the Year by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA). In 1978, he was awarded the Distinguished Veterinarian Award by the NCVMA. Leonard practiced for more than twenty-six years and attended twenty-six national conventions of veterinarians. He died in October 1984 at the age of ninety-one in Asheville, North Carolina. Less
