This collection contains printed textile mill maintenance and inspection notes from the Textile Development Company. These notes include maintenance and inspection procedures for machinery in card rooms, spinning rooms, and weaving rooms. Also included in this collection is a handwritten 4 month plan for inspections and employee training at an unidentified mill. Sidney Small Paine, a cotton manufacturer from Boston, organized and was president of the Textile Development Company in 1924. The company had offices in Boston and Greensboro, North Carolina. The Textile Development Company surveyed all aspects of textile mills operations, making recommendations and supervising their implementation for textile mills in the United States and abroad. Textile industry-produced marketing materials, reports, brochures, catalogs, etc., complete, in many cases, with textile samples documenting the effectiveness of particular dyestuffs on the various fabrics. Also included are a small number of government documents. The Institute of Textile Technology transferred its library to North Carolina State University's Burlington Textiles Library when it moved its operations to the NC State University Centennial Campus. The Burlington Textiles Library had maintained for years a vertical file for quick reference. After the merger of the two libraries, the Burlington Textiles Library transferred the historically valuable materials from both collections to the NC State University Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill Collection of Papers and Artifacts contains exhibit labels, a drawing, Articles of Agreement, and an iron spindle, all pertaining to the Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill, the first textile mill in North Carolina. Materials range in date from 1813 to 1871, with some documentation dating from 1991. The first textile mill in North Carolina was built before 1813 in Lincoln County, 1.5 miles east of Lincolnton. Michael Schenck built the mill and later partnered with Absolom Warlick to build a second in 1816. Through the 1820s and 1830s the profitable operation of the Schenck mills was a model to many more in North Carolina. The Schenck-Warlick Mill firmly established the Southern Textile industry. Less

The Institute of Textile Technology Lab Manual for Advanced Knits collection contains the laboratory manual for the Advanced Knits course in the Institute of Textile Technology from Spring 1994. The manual contains exercises in operating a master sampler circular machine, an OVJA 24 double knit machine, a TM single knit machine, a TM double knit machine, and a four track single knit machine. Samples of created fabrics are also included. The Institute of Textile Technology (ITT) is a center for research, consulting services, and continuing education with a focus on helping the textile industry improve performance and global economic competitiveness. Founded in 1944, The Institute of Textile Technology (ITT) joins individual companies in collective support of a private educational and research institution. Through its alliance with North Carolina State University College of Textiles, these institutions offer industry support unrivaled around the globe. ITT maintained educational scholarships for undergraduates and graduates to fund students and research in literary and scientific branches of learning. In the 1800's new job opportunties were available to women on factory floors. Women in the garment and textiles industry faced difficult working conditions. They were underpaid and earned only one half to one third of male wages. They worked about sixteen hours a day, six days a week. There were often fatal machine accidents and fires. In the 1850's, advocates worked to improve conditions for women in garment factories. They advocated for safety regulations as well as higher pay. Less

The files that comprise this collection once made up Gary Mock's website devoted to the history of textile mills, people and companies in the United States, chiefly in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. That website's URL http://textileshistory.org/ is no longer active. The digital files that comprised Dr. Mock's website were transferred to the NC State University Libraries by the Wilson College of Textiles in 2019. The Wilson College of Textiles took over Dr. Mock's content a few years ago, modified it considerably, added to it, and now hosts it on their website at https://sites.textiles.ncsu.edu/history/. NC State University Libraries captures that website quarterly as part of NC State University Web Sites Web Archive. Gary N. This collection contains notebooks created by James V. Pomeroy. Included are pattern samples, textile samples, and instructional illustrations from Pomeroy's time at the Philadelphia Textile School. While the materials span the time period 1898 to 1901, most documents date from 1899 to 1900. Topics covered include textiles, textile fabrics and machinery, carding, spinning, and weaving. James Voorhees Pomeroy entered into the Philadelphia Textile School (established 1884) in 1899 as part of the First Year Regular Day Class. Pomeroy received honorable mentions for the Silver Medal for General Excellence and for the Bronze Medal for Best Results in Color Harmony and Figured Design in 1899. In 1900, upon entering into the Second Year Day Class, Pomeroy was awarded the Prize Scholarship for the 1900-1901 school year. On June 6, 1901, he received his diploma from the textile school. He also earned the New England Cotton Manufacturers' Association Medal for General Excellence for Entire Course the same year. Less

This collection contains black-and-white photographic prints depicting the North Carolina State College (later University) School (later College) of Textiles. Represented in the photographs are faculty, students, and equipment, as well as lab facilities in Nelson Hall and David Clark Labs. Most images are undated, but all appear to have been created during the 1950s and early 1960s. Likewise, there is little information on the photographers, but all appear to have been created by photographers employed or contracted by the college. Floyd probably collected these images when he was employed at the college. During the 1950s and 1960s, Gene G. This collection contains pages from a notebook for classes Textiles 341 and 342, Fabric Design and Analysis, taught by J.A. Porter. The notebook includes fabric samples, design sheets with drawn and colored weaving designs, and fabric analysis sheets containing numerical analysis of fabric. It also includes laboratory reports, dated October and November 1950, submitted by Paul L. Cabrey. Paul L. Cabrey of Nabertha, Pa., was a student in the School of Textiles, North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering. Textiles 341 and 342, Fabric Design and Analysis, was a course required of juniors in textile manufacturing. The course covered construction of fancy weaves, fabrics backed with warp or filling, fabrics ornamented with extra warp or extra filling, regular and fancy piques, and methods of producing new designs. Students learned to analyze samples of fancy fabrics for design, drawing-in draft, reed plan and chain plan and to calculate how to reproduce fabrics when only a small sample was available. Less

The Subhash K. Batra papers contain correspondence, publication drafts, and reprints of published articles reflecting Batra’s work on nonwovens manufacturing technology and textile and fiber systems. Dr. Subhash Kumar Batra began his education in India and earned advanced degrees from MIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States. He joined the NC State University textiles faculty in 1977 and served as the director of the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center (now the Nonwovens Institute) at NC State University from 1991 to 1999.
