This collection contains the audio recordings from 1971-1998 of interviews conducted early in Wolfram’s career with speakers of Appalachian English, Puerto Rican English, Vietnamese English, Ozark English, and African-American vernacular English. The collection also features transcripts of many of the interviews and manuscripts of Wolfram’s resulting work on these dialects. Walt Wolfram is currently (2016) the William C. Friday Distinguished Professor of English Linguistics at North Carolina State University. Wolfram has pioneered research on social and ethnic dialects since the 1960s, authoring or co-authoring 20 books and more than 250 articles on varieties of American English. Since joining NC State University faculty in 1992, Wolfram's has concentrated his efforts on preserving the rich linguistic heritage of North Carolina and raising public awareness of its cultural significance. He established the North Carolina Language and Life Project (NCLLP) in 1993, a project that focuses on research, graduate and undergraduate education, and outreach programs related to language in the American South. The records of the North Carolina State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Office of the Dean contain annual plans, budget information, correspondence, department heads' meetings information, departmental reviews, enrollment data, faculty meetings information, handbooks, publications, and organizational charts. Also included are correspondence and oral history interviews relating to the book Knowledge Is Power, a history of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences published in 1987. Materials range in date from 1911 to 2019. In 1905, the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) first took up the suggestion of creating a dean for agriculture, but only under President Wallace Riddick (in 1917) was the position of dean created. In 1923, following the reorganization of North Carolina State College (later, University), the School (later, College) of Agriculture was created. In 1964, the School of Agriculture became the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Lee Marshall Smith Papers document Smith's career as a reporter, film critic, newspaper editor, educator and novelist. Also documented are some of Smith's numerous awards and honors, including the Robert Penn Warren Fiction Prize in 1991 and the North Carolina Award for Fiction in 1984. Subject files contain biographical information, including a vita, documentation from her time as Writer-In-Residence at Hollins College, and correspondence with her publishers (Harper and Row, 1968-1973). The Writings series includes extensive drafts of Smith's writings, including typescripts, manuscripts, reproductions, and handwritten notes. Among Smith's published novels are Black Mountain Breakdown (1981), Oral History (1983) , Fair and Tender Ladies (1988), The Devil's Dream (1992), Saving Grace (1995), and The Last Girls (2002). Her short stories include "Mom (Life As We Knew It)", "The French Revolution, A Love Story", "Bob, A Dog", "Me and My Baby View the Eclipse" (with accompanying artwork) and "Camera Obscura". The collection also contains plays adapted from Smith's novels and short stories. A Reviews series includes reviews and critical essays about Smith's work from 1968 to the present. The Audiovisual Materials series includes sound tapes (Lee Smith reading from books and short stories, radio interviews, etc.), a compact disc, and VHS tapes. A popular author of novels and short stories, Lee Smith earned a B.A. in English from Hollins College in 1967. Immediately after college she worked as a reporter for the Richmond News Leader and the Tuscaloosa News. Smith was an English teacher at Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, 1971-1975, and at the Carolina Friends School in North Carolina, 1975-1977. She taught creative writing at Duke University in 1977 and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1978-1981. From 1979 to 1980 she was the director of a summer writing workshop for the University of Virginia. In 1981, she came to North Carolina State University, where she taught for 19 years. Less

The Herb Schaal Landscape Architecture Papers contain sketches, drawings, reports, photographs, digital media, and correspondence from Schaal's career as a landscape architect and principal at EDAW, now AECOM. The collection particularly highlights Schaal's work on large-scale children's gardens, public botanical gardens, planning and design for university campuses, and analysis and design for key infrastructure projects such as highways and energy sites and corridors. Herb Schaal, a native of the San Francisco Bay area in California, is founding principal of the Fort Collins office of Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and Williams (EDAW, now AECOM), a landscape architecture firm. Schaal received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona and his Master of Landscape Architecture from State University of New York at Syracuse. He worked in the North Carolina State University Department of Landscape Architecture under Richard Moore, then chair of the department and previously Schaal's professor at Cal Poly Pomona. Schaal's work has included urban design studies; site planning and design for corporate facilities and campuses; highway and corridor work; and re-vegetation of difficult sites and disturbed areas. His specialty is public gardens, including educational gardens for children and contemplative gardens for healthcare facilities. The Nina Strömgren Allen Papers contain research and teaching documents, publications, photographs and slides, film, and extensive audiovisual materials pertaining to Allen's career and research in cellular biology. Dr. Allen was a professor at NC State beginning in 1995 and established the Molecular and Cellular Imaging Facility. She served as Director of the Plant Biology Graduate Program and also served as Chair of the Faculty Senate beginning in 2005 before retiring from NC State in 2008. In the 1970s she co-founded the Light Microscopy course at the Marine Biologicical Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachussetts and served as a Trustee on the Executive Committee. During this time she also co-developed the patent for Video Microscopy, greatly supporting cellular research. Jerry Turner, FASLA, AICP, graduated from the North Carolina State University School (now College) of Design in 1959 with a B. A. in Landscape Architecture. He worked as a planner for the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, Division of Community Planning, for a period of time. In 1967, Turner founded Jerry Turner and Associates, a landscape architecture firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. The David Lose Landscape Architecture Papers consists of project files and project plans for several of David Lose's landscape architecture projects dating from 2005 to 2015. These projects are located throughout the Southeastern United States, including Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. The collection also contains a binder on Lose's career and career highlights. David Lose, FASLA, was the founder and President Emeritus of the Nashville-based firm Lose & Associates. Lose is known for his planning and implementation of public parks, greenways, and recreational areas. In 1968, he graduated from NC State's College of Design with a B.A. in Landscape Architecture. One of his more notable projects was the 125,000 acre Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area located on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. Other projects include Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky and Tennessee, and the Gateway Trail greenway system in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Lose was elected Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in 1992, received many ASLA Excellence Awards, was a past chair of the National Recreation and Park Association Board of Trustees and also the Tennessee State Board of Architects, Engineers and Interior Designers. The Philip J. Kiviat Papers (1962-2010) consist primarily of technical papers related to Kiviat's work in developing the GASP and SIMSCRIPT simulation languages in the 1960s and 1970s. Other papers include conference brochures, contracts, correspondence, and writings by others. Philip J. Kiviat is the author of two books on simulation programming languages (SIMSCRIPT II and GASP) and numerous technical papers. The “Kiviat Graph” is widely used in the computer hardware and software performance field, as well as in other disciplines, to portray performance patterns and distinguish modes of behavior. Kiviat was the first technical Director of the Federal Computer Performance Evaluation and Simulation Center (FEDSIM) that was established by the United States Air Force in 1972. Less

The Bruce Schmeiser Papers, circa 1923-2014, document various aspects of Dr. Schmeiser's work in the field of computer simulation, where he has made notable contributions to simulation theory, methodology, and various forms of practical applications. He had been a leader in initiating and sustaining the primary ongoing activities of the INFORMS Simulation Society and the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC). Dr. Bruce Schmeiser received his B.A. in mathematical sciences from the University of Iowa (1969), his MS in industrial and management engineering from the University of Iowa (1971), and his Ph.D. from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech (1975). Upon completing his Ph.D., Schmeiser worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Southern Methodist University (1975-1978), later becoming an associate professor in the same department (1978-1979). Schmeiser took an associate professorship within the School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University (1979-1984), later becoming a full professor in the same department (1984-2012). Dr. Schmeiser is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) and a recipient of the I-Sim Distinguished Service Award (1997) and the David F. Malecha Papers contains drawings, concept sketches, models, correspondence, speeches, articles and papers, publications, personal notes, conference notes, presentation materials, photographs, and other materials related to Malecha's career in architecture, design teaching, and research. The bulk of the collection, comprised of faculty papers and architectural drawings and sketches, highlights Malecha's career as an educator and an architect. These papers document Malecha's tenure as a faculty member and Dean of the School of Design (later the College of Design) at North Carolina State University. Additional materials cover Malecha's position as President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), as well as his involvement with various architectural associations such as the European Association of Architectural Education (EAAE), the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), and the European Network of Heads of Schools of Architecture (ENHSA). Malecha (1949-2020), former dean of North Carolina State University’s College of Design and professor of architecture, has had a multi-faceted career encompassing administration, education, research, professional service, authorship, and practice as an architect. Malecha served as Dean of the College of Environmental Design at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona for more than a decade before taking over the position of dean at NC State University's School (later College) of Design in 1994. Throughout his career, he was involved in a number of professional associations and organizations related to architecture and architecture education. From 1989 to 1990, he was president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and was elected from 2008 to 2009 to serve as First Vice-President/President Elect of the AIA. In 2009, he was officially elected as President of the AIA. He regularly attended meetings, workshops, and conferences held by organizations such as the AIA, the European Association of Architectural Education (EAAE), the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), and the European Network of Heads of Schools of Architecture (ENHSA). The Arthur W. Cooper Papers, 1929, 1962-2014, contains correspondence, manuscript drafts, and research related to the publication Smith Island and the Cape Fear Peninsula: A Comprehensive Report on an Outstanding Natural Area (1964) by Cooper and Sheafe Satterthwaite. One folder contains correspondence with David Stick, who also wrote a book about Smith Island and Cape Fear. Also contained in this collection are correspondence, research, and writings about B. W. Wells, the move of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and the Mont Alto School of Forestry and its relationship to the North Carolina State University College of Natural Resources. A photograph of B. W. Wells is also found in this collection. While the materials span the time period 1929 to 2014, most documents date from 1962 to 1999. Arthur ("Art") W. Cooper earned bachelor and master of arts degrees in 1953 and 1955 from Colgate University and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1958. He then became a professor at North Carolina State University. In North Carolina, he developed a friendship with botanist B. W. Wells. Cooper eventually headed North Carolina State University's Department of Forestry, 1979-1994. In the late 1990s, he was a member of the Ad Hoc Committee to Update the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Study, a committee of six North Carolina State University faculty, tasked with updating a study that recommended options for preserving the lighthouse. The collection contains drawings and plans for a number of Schnedl’s projects and several historic buildings designed by other architects, which include site plans, floor plans, electrical and plumbing plans, elevations, sections, and details. The remaining records are grouped as project files, office records, and personal papers. North Carolina-based architect Richard Burke Schnedl specialized in residential design, especially at Bald Head Island, North Carolina. Schnedl received a B.Arch. from North Carolina State College and went on to work with Leslie N. Boney, Edwin Schnedl (Schnedl & Schnedl), Hayes, Howell & Associates, and later ran his own firm called Richard B. Schnedl, Architect and Richard B. Schnedl & Partner (later John W. The Bernard P. Zeigler Papers, 1962-2017, consists of files containing technical reports and early journal articles from when Zeigler was a graduate student and assistant professor at the University of Michigan. It also includes files from unpublished books, as well as presentations and related materials. Bernard P. Zeigler is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona. In 1962, he received a B.S. in Engineering Physics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964, and a Ph.D. in Computer/Communication Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1968. Zeigler is best known for his theoretical work concerning modeling and simulation performed according to general systems theory, and is well published in his field. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Michigan (1969-1975, 1980-1981), the Weizmann Institute in Israel (1975-1980), Wayne State University (1981-1984), The University of Arizona (1985-2010), and Arizona State University (2005-2008). While in Arizona, Zeigler served as Co-Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Modeling and Simulation (ACIMS).
