The Raleigh Chamber Music Guild in Raleigh, North Carolina, has presented chamber music concerts since 1941. As of 2006, the Guild presents nationally and internationally known artists as well as North Carolina musicians. The Guild also offers events for local musicians and composers, including master classes for and performances by young, student musicians, competitions for chamber music composers, and sponsorship of concerts by local musicians. Included are conference papers, class lecture notes, talking points, reports, publication drafts, schedules, research and reference files, and article reprints. The collection contains materials on the following topics: low level radioactive waste management, buckling, radon, criticality, reactor analysis, kinetics, and migration. In various series are papers that Dr. Murray prepared in conjuction with North Carolina State University, various government agencies, and contract work he did with such companies as Bechtel. Raymond Leroy Murray was born on February 14, 1920, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and died on June 22, 2011, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He received a B.S. in education, 1940, and M.S. in physics and mathematics, 1941, from the University of Nebraska, and a Ph.D in physics from the University of Tennessee, 1950. That same year he joined the new nuclear engineering program at North Carolina State College (later University) as a physics professor. He was a key figure in establishing and operating the University's nuclear reactor, which was the first operated on a college campus. From 1963 to 1974 he headed NC State University's Department of Nuclear Engineering. He had many research interests and edited six editions of textbooks about nuclear energy. He worked as a consultant for companies interested in the history of nuclear energy, disasters of nuclear power plants, the development of the atomic bomb and how to safely deal with radioactive waste.

Also included in this collection are articles and book chapters from Mansmann's published work, annual reports, employee files, and office files. Richard A. Mansmann, DVM, Ph.D., is the Director of Outreach for, and founding Director of, the Equine Health Program at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He authored several books including Equine Medicine and Surgery (3rd. ed.), and is an expert in equine podiatry, metabolic and respiratory treatment, rehabilitation, lameness prevention, and equine disaster medicine. Mansmann retired from NC State University in 2010 and reopened his private practice, working with chronic equine lameness and foot problems.

North Carolina-based architect Richard Burke Schnedl specialized in residential design, especially at Bald Head Island, North Carolina. Schnedl received a B.Arch. from North Carolina State College and went on to work with Leslie N. Boney, Edwin Schnedl (Schnedl & Schnedl), Hayes, Howell & Associates, and later ran his own firm called Richard B. Schnedl, Architect and Richard B. Schnedl & Partner (later John W. Thompson, Architect, P.A.).

MoreThe Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials, 1924-2017, document the professional activities of landscape architect Richard C. Bell. The collection consists of landscape plans and planting details, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and web content, as well as associated architecture plans created by partnering architectural firms. A small number of project files, which document both residential and public spaces, are also found in the collection. Bell’s projects include private residences, subdivision developments, municipal and civic structures, various businesses, and some two dozen college and universities. Richard C. (Richard Chevalier) Bell (1928- ), a native of Manteo, N.C., received a degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University's College of Design (then, the North Carolina State College School of Design) in 1950. Afterwards, he apprenticed under Simonds & Simonds of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frederick B. Stresau of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At the age of 21, he became the youngest designer to receive the Prix de Rome, allowing him to study in Europe for two years. He became a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In 1954, Bell became a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and he was elected to Fellowship in the organization in 1980. In 1955, Bell founded his first firm in Raleigh, N.C., and for many years operated the business from its award-winning office space, Water Garden Office Park. His son-in-law Dennis Glazener worked for the firm, and eventually became a partner. Bell retired in 2007.

Richard M. Felder joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University in 1969. He is currently (2021) Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus in the department.

MoreThe Richard Montali Papers document Montali's 29-year career as the chief veterinary pathologist at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., as well as his work at the Taronga Zoo in Australia, at Johns Hopkins Medical School, with the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Also documented are many conferences Montali attended or presented at. The collection includes slides, photographs, reports, conference proceedings, and other research materials. While the majority of the collection has documents ranging from the 1970s through to the 2010s, there are a few items that date back as far as 1908. Richard Montali worked for 29 years as Chief Pathologist for the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., where he performed diagnostic pathology, investigated zoo animal and wildlife diseases, and provided residency training for veterinarians working in zoo and wildlife pathology. Montali has written (or co-authored) more than 240 scientific articles about zoo and wild animal diseases. His research interests have included infectious diseases of carnivores (especially red and giant pandas), New World primates (especially tamarins and marmosets), and ungulates (especially elephants and black rhinoceros) with an emphasis on mycobacterial and viral infections.

Robert P. Upchurch's personal military records, 1948-1967, are included in the collection, as are the Upchurch Bulletin, 1980-2006, and Englandia, 1996-1999, family history quarterlies edited and published by Robert Phillip Upchurch. Also included are publications and other materials of the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST), and the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH). Robert Phillip Upchurch, 1928-2020, was born in Wake County, North Carolina, on February 9, 1928. He graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) with a B.S. in Crop Science in 1948. He received a master's degree in 1949 and in 1953 was awarded a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of California, Davis. Upchurch was a member of the faculty at North Carolina State College from 1949 to 1965. From 1955 to 1957 Upchurch served in the United States Air Force with the rank of second lieutenant. From 1965 through 1975 he worked for the Monsanto Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri. From 1975 to 1990 Upchurch was a professor and head of the Plant Sciences Department at the University of Arizona.

There are also materials, including conference programs, documenting Sargent’s involvement with the Winter Simulation Conference and other professional organizations and meetings. A list of books related to simulation donated to NC State University Libraries by Robert Sargent and individually cataloged may be found here. Robert G. Sargent studied simulation methodology and modeling at the University of Michigan. After completing his Ph.D. in 1966, he joined the faculty at Syracuse University, where he taught simulation until retiring in the late 1990s. Sargent made significant contributions to several areas of simulation research and software development and was widely involved in professional service activities.

Roger H. Clark (1939- ) is a practicing architect and ACSA Distiguished Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University. Clark received a B.S. in architecture in 1963 from the University of Cincinnati and a M.Arch. in 1964 from the University of Washington. Clark taught at the University of Virginia from 1964 to 1969, and at North Carolina State University beginning in 1969. His publications include Kinetic Architecture and Precedents in Architecture. Clark practiced architecture individually and with several firms in the Raleigh-Durham area including John D. Latimer and Associates, Inc., O'Brien/Atkins Associates, PA, and Cannon Architects. Clark has chaired the Committee on Design for the American Institute of Architects, both for the national organization and the North Carolina Chapter. He has also chaired the AIANC Awards Committee. Clark is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and has received numerous professional awards and honors.

These photographs were taken by Christer Berg for his publication People with Purpose. Ben Williams was the first curator of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design. He was previously curator of the North Carolina Museum of Art and helped found the Friends of the College series at NC State University as well as the Gregg Museum. Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright was curator of art at North Carolina State University from 1982 to 1985, and became director of the Visual Arts Center at North Carolina State University in 1985. She was director of the Gregg for 27 years. Roger Manley was curator of the Gregg Museum from 2010 to 2023. Manley led the Gregg Museum through major changes, including the move from the Talley Student Center to the former Chancellor's Residence.

Included are materials that document Sederoff's role in the Forest Biotechnology Group and the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University. Topics of the materials include DNA transfer in forest trees, lignin biosynthesis, tree genomes, agricultural applications of genetic research, and forest biotechnology. Materials range from 1953 to 2016. Ron (Ronald Ross) Sederoff is an emeritus faculty member for the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He previously served as Distinguished University Professor and Edwin F. Conger Professor of Forestry and Environmental Resources, Associate Member of the Department of Genetics and the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry, as well as co-director of the Forest Biotechnology Group. His earlier research interests included mutational mechanisms, gene expression, and chromosome structure in bacteriophage T4 and Drosophila. His interest in large woody plants resulted from studies on the mitochondrial DNA of maize. His more recent research interests relate to studying the genomics of forest trees, genetic regulation of lignin biosynthesis, molecular mechanisms in the formation of the plant cell wall, and gene expression in differentiating wood.

Also included are black and white photographs and negatives, newspaper articles, pamphlets, bound reports on research projects, glass slides, slides, film reels, annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) Council Meeting correspondence from the 1940s to 2000 and beyond, and articles and reference material dating back to 1863. The records provide insight into Braham's research on cloud precipitation physics, his engagement with other scientists, scholars, and institutions, like the University of Chicago and North Carolina State University, and his involvement with professional organizations. Roscoe R. Braham Jr. is a pioneering meteorologist, educator, expert in cloud precipitation physics, and visiting professor at North Carolina State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in geology in 1942 from the Ohio University. Braham completed his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Chicago, joined the University of Chicago staff in 1952 as a research meteorologist and retired in 1991 after thirty-seven years, twenty-six of them as a full professor. Braham has published more than eighty scientific reports, books, and monographs during his academic career. Braham joined the American Meteorological Society in 1945 and served as its president in 1988. He is credited for the discovery of the cell organization of thunderstorms as well as the coalescence-freezing mechanism of precipitation formation in natural clouds.

There is some information on Poultry Science faculty members and staff. Also included is a book that Curtin wrote about growing up near Weaverville, North Carolina, and photographs and a DVD showing her husband, Terrence M. Curtin, in 2020. Diane Sharon Saunders was born in Weaverville, North Carolina, in 1942. She came to NC State University in the 1960s and worked as a research technician in the Department of Poultry Science labs under Dr. Pat B. Hamilton for many years. From 1981 to 1986, she was in the microbiology lab of the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1987, she married Dean Terry of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Newman founded, led, and participated in many professional and human rights organizations; papers related to these organizational involvements, along with Newman's teaching and research files and his vast correspondence with fellow academics and activists, form the majority of the collection. Physically, most of the materials are typed and handwritten loose pages, notebooks, and computer printouts; there are also some newspaper clippings and bound volumes, and a small number of photographs and artifacts. Academic psychologist and human rights activist Slater E. Newman (1924-2015) was a member of the psychology faculty at North Carolina State University from 1957 to his retirement in 2003. In his research in cognitive psychology Newman investigated learning and memory, focusing in his later work on how people learn Braille and other tactile alphabets. He was an active member and leader in several professional organizations of psychologists. In addition to his academic research, Newman was deeply involved in human rights organizing. His first political projects represented in this collection dealt with academic freedom, but a major theme of his activism was international human rights, in particular promoting United States ratification of United Nations conventions. Newman helped to found and lead a number of human rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union affiliate in North Carolina and the Human Rights Coalition of North Carolina. At NC State University, he advocated for annual campus events teaching about and celebrating human rights.
