The Bobby J. Ward Research Collection on J. C. Raulston (1940-2010) is comprised of Ward’s research in preparation for his book, Chlorophyll in his Veins: J. C. Raulston, Horticultural Ambassador. The collection is organized alphabetically, which reflects Ward’s original arrangement. Types of materials include correspondence, articles, drafts, photographs, and personal papers. Some of Raulston’s papers have been arranged chronologically, as that is how Ward organized them for his research. Less

The Brian Shawcroft Papers, 1958-2017, contain drawings and other materials documenting the professional activities of modernist architect Brian Shawcroft and associated architecture firms Holloway-Reeves; MacMillan, MacMillan, Shawcroft & Thames; Environmental Planning Associates; Shawcroft-Taylor; and McKimmon Edwards Shawcroft Associates. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, professional files, photographic materials, project records, and slides. Drawings include original drawings, reproductions, and CAD printouts of process (or design) drawings and construction documents such as site plans, additions, alterations, and remodeling plans. Professional files include a list of completed projects, reproductions of photographs of projects, and supplemental materials to projects, Shawcroft’s curriculum vitae, and awards. Photographic materials include black-and-white and color prints and photographs of projects. Most photographs were taken by Shawcroft. Brian Shawcroft, born in England in 1929, is a modernist architect. Shawcroft studied architecture at the South West Essex Technical College and School of Art in London from 1949 to 1953. In 1960, he received a Masters in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following this, he served as an associate professor and lecturer in architecture at the North Carolina State College's School of Design from 1960 to 1968. Shawcroft began practicing architecture professionally in 1954 and worked with various firms throughout his career. He is recognized for designing much of the modernist home inventory in the Research Triangle region from the 1970s to the late 1990s. In 1991 he was awarded the annual Henry Kamphoefner Prize by the American Institute of Architects-North Carolina Chapter for demonstrated excellence in the Modern Movement of architecture. The Bruce J. Zobel Papers contain diaries, correspondence, speeches, an autobiography, articles, awards, reports, course information, theses proposals, serials, conference and symposia information, research plans, photographs, slides, artifacts, and other materials related to Zobel's career in forestry. Included are materials relating to Zobel's work on the faculty of North Carolina State University as well as work with the Central America and Mexico Resources Cooperative (CAMCORE), the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation for Promoting Scientific Research in the Forest Industry, the N.C. State-Industry Cooperative Forest Tree Improvement Program, the Southern Forest Tree Improvement Committee, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), Zobel Forestry Associates, and other organizations. Major topics include international forest improvement programs, forest genetics, wood properties, forest management, and tropical forestry. Bruce J. Zobel (1920-2011) was an internationally respected lecturer, consultant, professor, and expert on forest genetics and forest improvement. His career at North Carolina State University as a professor, head of the North Carolina Tree Improvement Cooperative, and professor emeritus as spanned nearly fifty years, from 1957 to 2004. Less

The Bruce Schmeiser Papers, circa 1923-2014, document various aspects of Dr. Schmeiser's work in the field of computer simulation, where he has made notable contributions to simulation theory, methodology, and various forms of practical applications. He had been a leader in initiating and sustaining the primary ongoing activities of the INFORMS Simulation Society and the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC). Dr. Bruce Schmeiser received his B.A. in mathematical sciences from the University of Iowa (1969), his MS in industrial and management engineering from the University of Iowa (1971), and his Ph.D. from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech (1975). Upon completing his Ph.D., Schmeiser worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Southern Methodist University (1975-1978), later becoming an associate professor in the same department (1978-1979). Schmeiser took an associate professorship within the School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University (1979-1984), later becoming a full professor in the same department (1984-2012). Dr. Schmeiser is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) and a recipient of the I-Sim Distinguished Service Award (1997) and the David F. Baker Distinguished Service Award from IIE (2004). Less

Bruce Weir (1943- ) is one of the world’s foremost researchers on statistical analysis of DNA for forensic, human health, and agricultural applications. Weir earned his PhD from North Carolina State University in 1968 under C. Clark Cockerham and served as a professor of statistics and genetics at NCSU from 1976-2006. The collection contains Weir's professional correspondence as well as research diagrams and materials related to Weir's tenure at NCSU. Less

The Burton F. Beers Papers contains personal correspondence, records of Burton F. Beers' tenure as a Fulbright Scholar, material relating to Beers's books, articles on Chinese-American relations, correspondence related to Beers's travels to various Asian countries, information on the North Carolina-China Council of the Asia Society, records of the Asian Curriculum Projects, notes and clippings on the Triangle East Asia Center, and North Carolina State University-related materials. Burton F. Beers (1927-2016) was an expert on United States Far Eastern policy, and served as professor of Asian Studies in the Department of History at North Carolina State University, 1955-1995. Beers received an undergraduate degree from Hobart College and received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Duke University in 1952 and 1956 respectively. He was a Fellow in East Asian Studies at the Ford Foundation, Harvard University, in 1959-1960, and a Fulbright Lecturer at the National Taiwan University in 1966-1967. At North Carolina State University, Beers was named Alumni Distinguished Professor in 1970; received the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, the highest honor given by the university to its faculty members, in 1992; and was awarded the Watauga Medal for significant contributions to the advancement of the university in 1998. Beers served as editor-in-chief for two school textbooks—-World History: Patterns of Civilization and Living in Our World. He revised a well-known textbook, The Far East, originally written by his major professor, Paul Clyde. He was a member of the education advisory board of the Asia Society. Less

The Catherine W. Bishir Papers chiefly contain research documentation compiled during the creation of North Carolina Architects and Builders, both for the book and also for the web-based platform, and for other articles and books written by Bishir, including her work on monuments in the American South. Among the files are many photographs of buildings and sites, mostly in North Carolina, organized by county. Launched in 2009, North Carolina Architects and Builders is a reference work that contains brief biographical accounts, building lists, and bibliographical information about architects, builders, and other artisans who planned and built North Carolina's architecture. Bishir is author or co-author of several prize-winning publications, including North Carolina Architecture; Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building; the three-volume Guides to the Historic Architecture of Eastern, Western, and Piedmont North Carolina; Southern Built: American Architecture, Regional Practice; and, most recently, Crafting Lives: African American Artisans in New Bern, North Carolina, 1770-1900s. From 1971 through 2001 she served as staff member and supervisor for the architectural survey and National Register of Historic Places programs in the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office. She then served as senior architectural historian with the non-profit organization, Preservation North Carolina. As adjunct professor at North Carolina State University Department of Architecture she taught classes in vernacular architecture and North Carolina architecture. She was Curator of Architecture for Special Collections at North Carolina State University Libraries, where she was instrumental in the web-based North Carolina Architects and Builders: A Biographical Dictionary (ncarchitects.lib.ncsu.edu) and in collecting architectural drawings and other records. Contained in this collection are an NC State decal and football ticket from Charles "Les" Britt's years as a student at North Carolina State College (1950). Also included is a 2017 memoir Britt wrote for his children. In it he recounts his life and career, including his student years at NC State College (later NC State University) and his membership in Kappa Sigma fraternity. Charles Leslie "Les" Britt, Jr. (1930-2017), had a long career in aviation and aeronautical electronics. Working for General Electric, he oversaw the payload of the first successful Atlas missile launch at Cape Canaveral. In 1962, he joined Research Triangle Institute (RTI), where he researched and designed radar techniques, electronic systems, and large computer applications. In 1979, he founded the RTI Virginia Office, and worked with NASA, the FAA, and manufacturers to develop, test, and certify the lifesaving airborne wind shear radar detection system that became required for all U.S. commercial aircraft. He retired from RTI in 2006. Less

The Charles M. Ellertson Research and Study Collection on Typography contains books, serials (including a run of The Association of American University Presses Book and Jacket Show), booklets and leaflets on graphic design, typography, fonts, and graphic designers, and some papers related to Ellertson's work in typography. The collection also includes a set of Merganthaler Linotype negatives from Ellertson's early career. Materials range in date from 1956 to 2022. Charles M. Ellertson (1945-2022), a typographer and typesetter, co-founded Tseng Information Systems in Durham, NC in 1980 and was vice-president of the firm until its closure in 2021, setting type for university presses throughout the U.S. Using Fontographer and later FontLab, Charles created special characters and diacritics for non-Romanized languages; his work enabled the publication of Native American research and literature. Charles was married to Barbara Williams, founder of BW&A Books, Inc., a local book design and production studio. Less

The Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition Records primarily document two events sponsored by the Charlotte Research Institute: the Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and the Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition. The collection is divided into two series, one for each event. The records include programs, sponsorship packages, speaker invitations, talking points, agendas, press releases, surveys, speaker biographies, logos, photographs, presentations, executive summaries, applications, and judging packets. This collection consists of both physical and digital materials. The materials are dated from 2005 to 2010. UNC Charlotte established the Charlotte Institute for Technology Innovation (now the Charlotte Research Institute) in 2000. The insitute's mission is to foster research partnerships between the university and businesses, including in the areas of bioinformatics, nanotechnology, and biotechnology. To that end, the Institute established and co-sponsored the Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and the Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition, which have been held annually beginning in 2002. The Biotechnology Conference brings together biotechnology, business, and research professionals to highlight regional biotechnology initiatives and investment trends in the Charlotte area. The Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition offers start-up and early stage entrepreneurs an opportunity to improve their strategy and compete against other innovative companies. Less

Also included is information (including keyboard instructions) on the carillon in the Memorial Bell tower on the North Carolina State University campus. Chris Gould has been a professor of physics at North Carolina State University, beginning in 1971. His reserach specialized in nuclear physics, especially neutrino physics, parity and time reversal symmetries, and other areas. Gould holds a B. S. degree in physics from Imperial College, London (1965); and M. S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Pennsylvania (1966, 1969). He is a fellow of the American Physical Society. This collection contains reports and periodicals regarding the city of Kannapolis and the North Carolina Research Campus. The reports, primarily issued by or for the city of Kannapolis, date from 2006-2007. The magazines, issued by the city of Kannapolis, date from 2007-2011. Kannapolis, North Carolina, originated as a textile mill town in 1906 when J.W. Cannon purhcased farmland between Salisbury and Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1908 the first mill at Kannapolis opened. Kannapolis officially incorporated in 1984. The mills went through several owners including the Cannon family, the Pacific Holding Company, Fieldcrest Mills, and its final owner the Pillowtex corporation. After the mills closed their doors for the final time in 2003, government officials and city planners in Kannapolis initiated a process to redefine the mill town as a biotechnology hub through the development of the North Carolina Research Campus. The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive, 2003-2018, includes video and audio interviews of computer simulation pioneers. The video oral histories of computer simulation pioneers were funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and were conducted from 2013-2016. The purpose of this grant initiative was to capture and preserve accounts of seminal projects, related pivotal events, and distinguished project contributors from the perspectives of, and the words of, individuals who witnessed the relevant history of computer simulation firsthand. The importance of collecting these accounts is also based on the remarkable degree to which computer simulation has heavily influenced the design of computing software. The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive is a part of the Computer Simulation Archive, which was established in 1998 with substantial initial donations of papers and research materials by three pioneers in the field of computer simulation—Robert G. Sargent, Alan Pritsker, and Julian Reitman. The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive includes interviews conducted from 2003-2016, almost all of which were funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Computer simulation was established as a separate discipline of research and practice during the mid-1950s, with many seminal works in the field published from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. Reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the field’s pioneers, simulation encompasses theory, methodology, and practice arising at the interface of applied probability, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering, management, manufacturing engineering, operations research, and statistics. The roots of the computer simulation field are revealed in the broad diversity of current application domains in which the development and use of large-scale computer simulation models are critical to the design, improvement, and operational control of computer and telecommunications networks, financial systems, healthcare delivery systems, transportation systems, and governmental and military systems. The field comprises discrete-event simulation, Monte Carlo methods, combined discrete-continuous simulation as well as hybrid analytic/simulation computer models. It is noteworthy that as the field has matured, it has contributed significantly to the evolution of allied disciplines—for example, object-oriented programming in computer science and innovative resampling schemes in statistics.
