This collection contains materials related to Dr. Loomis's elephant conservation project in Korup, Cameroon. It also contains North Carolina Zoological Park Anesthesia Records, zoological reports and publications, correspondence, and documents relating to the American College of Zoological Medicine. Material in halfbox 9 is restricted. Dr. Michael Loomis served 30 years as the Chief Veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoo; he retired in January 2016. As Chief Veterinarian, Loomis oversaw the division that provides all veterinary medical care for the Zoo’s animal collections. Dr. Loomis received his Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis, and received his master's degree in zoology from Indiana University. The Michael Overcash Papers contain materials, 1928-2007, documenting Overcash's career as a North Carolina State University faculty member in chemical, biological and agricultural engineering, who studied industrial pollution prevention, waste minimization, life cycle inventory research, and sustainability. Included are reports, research files, computer data and disks, correspondence, and field studies. Also included are scientific literature, catalogs, journals, laboratory notebooks, and published papers. Michael R. Overcash was assistant professor, 1972-1976, and associate professor, 1976-1981, of chemical engineering and biological and agricultural enginnering, and professor, 1981-2007, of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. Since 2007, Overcash has been a vsiting scholar in industrial and manufaturing engineering at Wichita State University. Overcash has developed an in-depth national research program in two distinctive areas--life cycle inventory research and sustainability research. He has published books on techniques for industrial pollution prevention, organics in municipal sludge land treatment systems, livestock waste management systems, and related subjects. Less

The Mitchell Bush Papers contain research and teaching notes, presentations and materials, journals and publications, correspondence, field studies, field notes, research projects, training materials, anesthesia records, digital media such as floppy disks, CD-ROMS, zip disks, film strips, videotapes and 35mm slides documenting medical studies, surgeries and wildlife in national and international settings. Many of the files relate to Mitchell Bush's work with the National Zoological Park through the Smithsonian Institution. There are also separate series about his work with giraffes and his work with pandas. Almost the entire collection is related to Bush's work as a zoo veterinarian. Although the collection has been divided into series to assist with the research process, some topics may be covered across multiple series. For example, there is a series about the work that Bush did with pandas, but pandas may also appear in other series such as in the Subject Files or the Professional Organizations series. The majority of the materials in the collections date from 1950 to 2012. A few earlier items or reprints of earlier items are also included. Mitchell (Mitch) Bush is a leader in the field of modern zoological medicine. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, in 1965, and his career has been focused on pioneering studies and clinical practice in zoological and comparative medicine. He has worked for the National Zoological Park at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., since 1972, and beginning in 1994 he has served as the Chief of Veterinary Services at the Smithsonian Conservation & Research Center. He holds a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and is a visiting scientist at Kruger National Park in South Africa. Less

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail Records contain materials relating to the activities and functions of the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. These materials include meeting minutes for the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee with budgetary information, planning materials, organization correspondence, public surveys, and operational procedure. Also included are materials relating to partnership with the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. Materials date from 2008 to 2017. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) became a State Trail and part of the state parks system by vote of the General Assembly in 2000. The MST is an off-road trail that extends from the coast of North Carolina to the mountains in Western North Carolina. The Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (FMST) is a nonprofit group that helps to maintain and promote the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) in conjunction with the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation (NCDPR). The Murray Whisnant Papers contains correspondence, project files, slides and architectural drawings, as well as other records related to Murray Whisnant’s architectural projects and other designs dating from 1959 to 2017. Many of the projects Whisnant consulted on and designed were located in Charlotte, North Carolina. There are also sketches and plans of projects that were never completed. William Murray Whisnant was born and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated from Central High in 1950. He then attended North Carolina State University and studied within the School of Design for six years, where he was influenced by faculty member Eduardo Fernando Catalano and visiting architect Buckminster Fuller, as well as Dean Henry L. Kamphoefner. Upon graduation in 1956 Whisnant returned to Charlotte and joined the architectural firm of Sloan and Wheatley. In 1960, he became partner to Charles Wheatley. In 1974, Whisnant left to establish his own firm, Murray Whisnant Architects. In 1990 Murray Whisnant was awarded the Kamphoefner Prize by the AIA (American Institute of Architects) North Carolina chapter and the North Carolina Architectural Foundation. Murray Whisnant was active in the Charlotte community and even late in his life advocated for municipal projects, such as “Energy Park”, to enhance the lived spaces in the city where he was raised. The Murry O. Phillips Papers contain photographic slides, overhead transparencies, films strips, papers, scrapbooks, and ephemera related to Phillips lengthy career in agriculture and agricultural education in the state of North Carolina. Additionally there is material documenting M. O. Phillips's involvement with the development of the town of Coats, North Carolina, and material documenting Phillips's participation with the Future Farmers of America. The collection also includes an extensive slide collection created by Phillips that highlights the beauty of rural North Carolina, as well as personal slides, photographs,and papers. Murry O. Phillips (1913-2000) taught vocational agriculture in Harnett County, N.C., and then served as the Chief Curriculum Specialist and Supervisor for curriculum development in vocational education for the North Carolina Department of Public Education. Phillips was a pioneer in the use of audiovisual material in the classroom. The collection consists of mounted photographs and various artifacts brought together for the 2001 North Carolina State University exhibit "The Sodfather: A Friend of Agriculture in North Carolina" highlighting the career of James A. Graham (1921- ), who was North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture from 1964 until 2000. James A. Graham served as the North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture from 1964 until 2000. In this capacity, he emerged as a national figure, holding the presidency at various times of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture, and the Southern United States Trade Association. The NC State University Libraries Oral Histories about the James B. Hunt Jr. Library (2008-2015) contains oral history interviews on the design and construction of the Hunt Library. The people interviewed were staff from the NC State University Libraries, the University Architect from NC State University, and designers from the architectural firms. NC State University Libraries Special Collections Research Center staff conducted the interviews. Interviews conducted in 2008 and 2009 exist only in audio format (WAV); those from 2015 in video and audio formats (MOV and WAV). Written transcripts (PDF format) also exist for these interviews. The NC State University Libraries Research and Study Collection of Pop-Up Books contains pop-up books, catalogs, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera related to pop-up books. These materials were selected from a larger collection of pop-up books donated by Sara Frooman and others. The books cover a wide range of subjects, from non-fiction works about wildlife to fictional works such as Little Red Riding Hood and Alice in Wonderland. Paper Engineers or designers are listed if known. Materials range in date from 1960 to 2009. This collections contains documentation on her Nancy Monteiro-Rivivere's research. Included are research files, lab notebooks, photographs, publications, and specimen slides. Nancy Ann Monteiro-Riviere is a Professor of Investigative Dermatology and Toxicology in the Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University. She holds an M.A. from Stonehill College and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University. She also did postdoctoral work at the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology (CIIT) Centers for Health Research in Research Triangle Park.Her research has focused on the toxicity of environmental and novel pharmaceutical compounds, including toxicity of nanomaterials and cell uptake pathways and biodistribution studies. She has edited Skin Toxicology- Target Organ Series for Toxicology and Nanotoxicology: Characterization, Dosing and Health Effects (2007). Less

This collection contains copies of speeches, talks and papers related to Nash Nicks Winstead's work as a professor and administrator at North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1990. There are as well materials pertaining to his work with the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation, his work for the Institute of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, and his service in the United States Citizen-Ambassador Program. Included are printed copies of Winstead's personal writings: histories of both North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1995 and the North Carolina State University Provost's Office from 1955 to 1993; genealogical writings about his ancestors and hometown of Leasburg, North Carolina, which contains information dating from 1800 to 1960; and a volume documenting the Winstead family pets. Also found are Winstead's personal and professional correspondence from 1959 to 1994. Nash Nicks Winstead (1925-) held a number of academic and administrative positions at North Carolina State University between 1953 and 1990. He began his career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as a professor of plant pathology, and moved on to become assistant provost, vice provost, vice chancellor, and interim chancellor. As an administrator he played a large role in facilitating affirmative action measures, and was particularly involved in the integration of African American students into academic and social programs at North Carolina State University. This collection is comprised of notes and records of the National Textile Center from 1992-2000. These records include correspondence, meeting and committee notes, budget proposals, and funding information. The National Textile Center (NTC) is a clustered research consortium of four universities--North Carolina State University, Auburn University, Clemson University, and Georgia Institute of Technology--located in the heart of the U.S. textile industries manufacturing base. The institutions share human resources, equipment and facilities to serve the Fiber/Textile/Fabricated Products/Retail complex. The Center provides the knowledge base for the continuing viability of the U. S. industry through innovative research and collaborative partnerships. The Nina Strömgren Allen Papers contain research and teaching documents, publications, photographs and slides, film, and extensive audiovisual materials pertaining to Allen's career and research in cellular biology. Dr. Allen was a professor at NC State beginning in 1995 and established the Molecular and Cellular Imaging Facility. She served as Director of the Plant Biology Graduate Program and also served as Chair of the Faculty Senate beginning in 2005 before retiring from NC State in 2008. In the 1970s she co-founded the Light Microscopy course at the Marine Biologicical Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachussetts and served as a Trustee on the Executive Committee. During this time she also co-developed the patent for Video Microscopy, greatly supporting cellular research. Additionally she has written several publications for the Cell Motility and the Cytoskeleton Journal. Less

The Norma DeCamp Burns Architectural Drawings and Papers contain drawings of completed and prospective projects, presentation boards, project files, and other professional materials. Some projects represented include the Chatham County Governmental Complex, the Ziegler House, and the Research Triangle Park (RTP) master plan, among many others. Materials range in date from 1975 to 2005. Norma DeCamp Burns received a masters in Architecture from the NC State School (now College) of Design in 1976. She became president and partner of Burnstudio with her husband and fellow architect Robert Paschal Burns in 1977. She served on the Raleigh City Council from 1987-1989. In 1998, DeCamp Burns became the first woman to become president of the North Carolina Board of Architecture, a role she served in until 2001. She received many accolades and awards over the years including the Adaptive Reuse Award, the Spectator Architect award, and being chosen as TIME Magazine Loeb fellow at Harvard University. She also was a visiting professor at the NC State College of Design. After retiring, DeCamp Burns founded Bluebird Hill, an organic farm offering tours and classes. This collection includes clippings, honors, and other materials related to Norman Camp's career between the 1970s and 2010s as an educator, environmentalist, and community activist, as well as speeches by Dr. Camp delivered to organizations in Raleigh, North Carolina. A significant part of the collection relates to the preservation of Walnut Creek Wetlands by Partners for Environmental Justice, of which Dr. Camp is founder and chair. Some of the items are photocopies. Norman C. Camp (1933- ) is a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, who founded Partners for Environmental Justice, a grassroots organization in southeast Raleigh that preserved Walnut Creek Wetlands for the benefit of the historically black neighborhood surrounding it. Dr. Camp received his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in 1979. He worked as an educator and administrator and was employed by the State of North Carolina in the Department of Human Resources and of Public Instruction. He has served on boards and commissions related to education, community development, and environmental conservation. Less

The Norman D. Anderson Collection on Ferris Wheels and Related Materials contains manuscript materials, newsletters, research files, photographs, postcards, and publications on Ferris wheels, amusement parks, and related subjects. The primary subject of the collection is the Ferris wheel. While the focus of the material is the Ferris wheel, there is also information relating to the history of amusement parks, amusement park preservation (or lack thereof), the amusement manufacturing industry and workers in the industry, as well as other material. Included are photographs and material about the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, as well as other World's Fairs. Dr. Norman D. Anderson is a Professor Emeritus of Science Education at North Carolina State University. In 1994 he retired after 31 years of teaching at North Carolina State University. He is a collector of materials on Ferris wheels and an ardent researcher of the Ferris wheel. Anderson authored the book Ferris Wheels: An Illustrated History, published in 1992, and he is coauthor of the 1983 children's book, Ferris Wheels as well as several science books for children.
