The records of the North Carolina State University Committee on Undergraduate Program Review (CUPR), primarily include materials that relate to academic program reviews on curriculum or degree programs, within the University's Department of Agricultural and Extension Education as well as other departments. Examples of materials contained in this collection include agendas, minutes, annual reports, portfolio examples and materials that specifically relate to accounting and poultry science. Materials range in dates from 2003 to 2005. The North Carolina State University Committee on Undergraduate Program Review (CUPR) was created by the Vice Provost in 2000 and charged with focusing on a myriad of activities and processes related to undergraduate academic program development, review, evaluation and improvement. With primary faculty oversight, the mission of the CUPR was to schedule and manage the submission of portfolios submitted as part of the undergraduate program review process; identify needed forms of support for the process including administrative, educational, technological, and financial support; and advise the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs on all issues related to the program review process. The records of the Council on Athletics at North Carolina State University contain meeting minutes, announcements, notes, agendas, and other information from meetings of the Council and affiliated groups, including the Faculty Athletics Committee and the Athletics Department, as well as general correspondence, annual reports, and administrative, financial, and regulatory information regarding athletics practices at North Carolina State University, as overseen by the Council. Also included in this collection are meeting minutes, announcements, notes, agendas, and other information from meetings of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), of which NC State has been a member since the founding of the conference in 1953; and from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), of which NC State is also a member. General correspondence, annual reports, and administrative, financial, and regulatory information regarding athletics practices of the ACC and the NCAA are included in this collection. Materials range in date from 1923 to 2009. The Athletic Council was established at North Carolina State College (later, University) in or before 1923 to oversee all athletic activities at the college, including activities in the college's Physical Education Department as well as intercollegiate activities with other colleges. The Athletic Council held administrative control over all athletic activities at NC State until the first Athletics Director was hired in 1948. Since then, the Athletic Council has worked in consultation with the Athletics Director to oversee athletic activities at NC State. The Council on Athletics continues to maintain responsibility for representing NC State at meetings of both the Atlantic Coast Conference (of which NC State has been a member since the conference's founding in 1953) and the NCAA. The records of the North Carolina State University Council on Undergraduate Education, formerly the Commission on Undergraduate Education, include correspondence, meeting minutes, a member list and a memorandum. Materials range in dates from 1987 to 2001. The North Carolina State University Commission on Undergraduate Education was established on November 20, 1985 under the leadership of Provost Nash Winstead. The Commission members were faculty and staff members of North Carolina State University. The Commission on Undergraduate Education was later renamed the Council on Undergraduate Education. The committee's responsibilities were to identify competencies and common understanding and knowledge that were required in all undergraduate degree programs. They were also required to inventory various means of satisfying outcomes and to recommend procedures for the University Courses and Curricula Committee to evaluate. The records of the North Carolina State University Faculty Orientation and Hospitality Committee span from 1955 to 1992. The collection contains information pertaining to new faculty orientation at North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina State College), including packets of information sent out to new faculty previous to orientation, evaluations of the orientaton event, intra-university correspondence regarding the orientation event, and other related documents. The faculty orientation packets contain a wide variety of information, including: information pertaining to the North Carolina State Woman's Club, the University Club (previously, the Faculty Family Recreation Center), tourist information regarding Raleigh and North Carolina, and items of faculty interest, ranging from retirement information to athletic events schedules. The records contain only one document after 1981, which is dated 1992. The North Carolina State University Faculty Orientation and Hospitality Committee existed in or before 1955. (North Carolina State University was previously referred to as North Carolina State College.) The purpose of the Faculty Orientation and Hospitality Committee was to organize and host an annual orientation event for new faculty and to provide the new faculty and their families with information that would make their transition to the Raleigh area as welcoming as possible. New Faculty Orientation is still an event at North Carolina State University and packets are still provided to faculty prior to this event. New Faculty Orientation is currently (2012) sponsored by the Office of the Provost and administered through the North Carolina State Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, which, apparently, handles new faculty affairs. The records of the North Carolina State University Group Insurance & Benefits Committee contain correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, reports and annual reports, brochures and manuals about benefits programs, and other general information about the process of selecting and administering employee benefits at the university. Materials range in date from 1951 to 1990. The Group Insurance Committee was convened at North Carolina State College in or before 1951 to address insurance and retirement topics for faculty and staff employees of the college. The committee has changed names several times: in 1955, it became the Committee on Group Insurance and Faculty Welfare; in 1977, the Group Insurance and Welfare Committee; and in 1989 adopted the current name of Group Insurance & Benefits Committee. A member of the committee has also reported to the University of North Carolina (UNC) System-wide insurance and benefits group since at least the mid-1970s, incorporating the recommendations of that group into decisions made locally for NC State employees. As of 2010, the purpose of the Group Insurance & Benefits Committee remains to act in an advisory role to the North Carolina State University Benefits Office on all matters of insurance, retirement, and benefits for university employees. The Harrelson Fund Committee Records contains minutes, correspondence, financial information, and annual reports documenting the activities of the Harrelson Fund Committee. There are also a large amount of documents related to the Harrelson Lectures, many of which document the planning and scheduling of lectures. Also included are texts of many of the lectures and faculty nominations for lecturers as well as promotional material such as flyers, posters, and brochures. The Harrelson Fund Committee was established at North Carolina State College in 1961 to manage the funds of former Chancellor John W. Harrelson's endowment. Since the Committee's founding, they have aspired to use the funds in accordance with the priorities established in Harrelson's will: "lectures (first claim); books; works of art; appropriate markers for buildings named for persons." Accordingly, one of the most important functions of the Harrelson Committee has been to organize the annual Harrelson Lectures, where a well-known public or academic figure gives a series of talks at NC State University. Materials range in date from 1951 to 2010. The Committee on the History of the College was established in or before 1951 at North Carolina State College to coordinate the naming and dedication of campus buildings and roads, and to collect documentation on the history of the college. In 1972, the committee's name was changed to the Committtee on Commemoration, Institutional History, and Naming of Buildings; was changed again in 1977 to the Committee on Institutional History and Commemoration; and was changed sometime in the 1980s to the Institutional History and Commemoration Committee. Materials range in date from 1994 to 2011. The North Carolina State University Marine Sciences Council was established in 1995 to advise the Provost and Chancellor on affairs affecting marine science research, outreach, and teaching. The Council consisted of faculty from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Because faculty were split between colleges, the Council provided a central focal point for marine sciences concerns. The Council played a prominent role in assessing and evaluating the Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST) based in Carteret County. Less

Materials range in dates from 1990 to 1991. The North Carolina State University Mission Review Committee was established in 1990 under the leadership of Chancellor Larry K. Monteith. The University of North Carolina Board of Governors, which has the statutory authority to establish the mission of the University of North Carolina constituent institutions, asked each campus to review its mission and to propose revisions as necessary. The Mission Review Committee consisted of faculty, staff, students, faculty senate members and North Carolina State University Board of Trustees. Max Gardner Award was conferred. Materials range in date from 1949 to 2008. The O. Max Gardner Award was established in 1949 to recognize the faculty member from among all University of North Carolina (UNC) system schools who has "...made the greatest contribution to the human race." Nominations for faculty representatives are collected at each university during the fall of the academic year, and one to three candidates are selected from among those nominees to represent each university. From this pool, one or two faculty members are chosen in the spring of the academic year by the UNC Board of Governors' Committee as the recipient(s) of the O. The North Carolina State University Phi Beta Kappa Committee was created in 1977 at North Carolina State University to apply for a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and best known society for recognition of academic excellence and scholarly achievement. The North Carolina State University Phi Beta Kappa committee chairman was Robert S. Bryan and the committee members were heads of selected departments. The committee was active through at least 1994, but may have dissolved shortly thereafter. Less

The records of the Physical Environment Committee at North Carolina State University contain meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, annual reports and other reports, committee membership rosters, and other information regarding the activities of the committee in their duties to monitor the physical environment of the campus. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2010. The Buildings and Grounds Committee was established at North Carolina State College in or before 1932 to consider matters related to the aesthetic appearance of the campus. In the committee's early years, this meant primarily considering issues of landscaping and other campus beautification, as well as adornment (and other decorative considerations) for the buildings on campus. In 1970, the Buildings and Grounds Committee was accused of becoming lax in these responsibilities, and was reorganized as the Campus Planning and Environment Committee, with duties to include a more wholistic responsibility for directing all matters related to the physical environment of the campus at North Carolina State University. In 1986, the committee was renamed the Physical Environment Committee. This committee existed until the 2016-2017 academic year, when it was dissolved. Less

The Preprofessional Health Sciences Review Committee Records include memos, correspondence, flyers, and other records produced by the North Carolina State University Preprofessional Health Sciences Review Committee from 1979 to 1992, with a gap from 1981 to 1989. While the purpose of the committee was to review and recommend students from NC State University to preprofessional health sciences programs, the information contained within the collection primarily concerns committee duties such as establishing contacts the admissions departments of these programs, maintaining members of the committee, and electing chairs of the committee. Later records contain averaged data about students who were accepted to preprofessional health sciences programs and information about program requirements that the committee would need in order to better assist future applicants. The North Carolina State University Preprofessional Health Sciences Review Committee is a group that reviews students' professional school application packages. The committee has been renamed the North Carolina State University Health Professions Review Committee. This committee is comprised of faculty from different areas that review all medical, dental, optometry, physician assistant and pharmacy applicants who choose to have their files reviewed by the committee and a composite submitted on their behalf. The committee makes a "university committee recommendation" for each applicant reviewed and submits this along with the student's "composite" review committee recommendation to each school to which they ask to have their file sent. The committee began in 1975 according to a piece of correspondence in the collection and exists in the present as of 2012, but there is no clear mention of specific people associated with beginning this committee. During the time of the collection that dates from 1979 to 1992, Dr. John Roberts and former Chancellor Dr. James L. Oblinger. At that time, Oblinger was Associate Dean of Academic Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Less

The records of the Radiation Safety Committee at North Carolina State University include correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, reports and annual reports, and handbooks and other procedural information concerning the operation of the nuclear reactor and the use of radioisotopes on campus. Also inclued are some meeting minutes from the Reactor Safeguards Advisory Group, an associated component organization of the Radiation Safety Committee. The Radioisotope Committee was established in or before 1950 to oversee the use of radioisotopes on the campus of North Carolina State College, largely in conjunction with operations of the nuclear reactor. In 1953, the Radioisotope Committee recommended the establishment of a permanent, more official committee to take on these responsibilities (as well as to oversee the actual running of the nuclear reactor), and the Radioisotope Committee was thus replaced by Chancellor Harrelson with the Committee on Safety and Health for the Nuclear Reactor and Radioisotopes in September of that year. In 1969, the Committee on Safety and Health for the Nuclear Reactor and Radioisotopes was renamed the Radiation Protection Council, and has since been renamed the Radiation Safety Committee. Materials within the collection reflect the changing research concerns of the university. Issues confronted by the Research Committee range from policy creation and funding problems to the creation of web pages, depending on the various time periods. The University Research Committee's records range in date from 1943 to 2004. The North Carolina State University (previously College) Research Committee provides oversight in the administration of research proposals and funding resources for members of the faculty. While committee responsibilities have changed and evolved throughout the years, the management of proposal development (including budget development and agency guidelines) have maintained. The Research Committee has been concerned with the review and development of institutional policy for research, with assistance in obtaining financial support for research and research facilities. Its principal activities include the following: (1)Obtaining information on sources of funds, (2) Assisting individual faculty members in structuring proposals for grants and contracts, (3) Administering special research funds. The records of the North Carolina State University Safety Committee span from 1961 to 2003, though the years between 1998 and 2003 are not represented in the collection. It contains the records of the North Carolina State University Safety Committee (also known as the Committee on Safety and Health), including: meeting minutes, monthly reports, records of calls to the Safety Hotline, and information on radiation and laboratory safety. The North Carolina State University Safety Committee (also referred to as the Committee on Health and Safety) appears to have existed as early as 1961. The purpose of the committee was to ensure that adequate safety measures were utilized at North Carolina State University, particularly fire safety, radiation safety, and lab safety. Though all safety concerns were relevant to the committee, these receive particular attention in the files. Safety measures and education at North Carolina State University are now handled by the North Carolina State University Environmental Health and Safety Center. Currently, the center manages the Safety Hotline, publishes the AWARE newsletter, and manages health and safety concerns from general health concerns, to information regarding radiation safety and environmental affairs. The work of the United Fund Committee was taken over by the State Employees Combined Campaign (SECC), which was established in 1984 by Governor James B. Hunt. The principal aim of the committee was to strengthen and sustain North Carolina and its citizens. The campaign assures employees and retirees continuous opportunity to support charitable organizations that are accountable, fiscally sound, and committed to improving the quality of life in our state, nation and world. The North Carolina State University Teaching Effectiveness and Evaluation Committee was established in June 1984 by the Chancellor of North Carolina State University. The committee reported to the Provost and had a broad range of responsibilities that included examining the effectiveness of current techniques of faculty evaluation, identifying and making recommendations on all factors affecting teaching effectiveness, collecting and disseminating information regarding experimental programs and the successes and failures of different methods of instruction, and evaluating the effectiveness of utilizing graduate students as teachers.
