The Cathy Sterling Papers include correspondence, texts of speeches, reports, clippings, photographs, and artifacts relating to Cathy Sterling's tenure, 1970-1971, as Student Body President at North Carolina State University. Many of the materials focus on Sterling's status as North Carolina State University's first female student body president, as well as her involvement in protest movements against the Vietnam War, which included organizing a campus Peace Retreat. The materials range in date from 1966 to 1999, with the bulk of the materials being from 1970 to 1972. Cathy (now known as Kate) Sterling served as the first female student body president at North Carolina State University, 1970-1971. She conducted a successful write-in campaign with a platform that focused on students’ rights and the administration’s use of student fees. In the Spring of 1970, Sterling married Gene Messick, a graduate of the School (now College) of Design at NC State and director of the multimedia program at Stewart Theatre. Soon after, Messick accepted a teaching position at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Sterling moved to Ithaca to join him after the conclusion of her term as Student Body President. However, Sterling remained active in NC State’s Student Government activities throughout the 1971-1972 academic year. Sterling later returned to NC State, where she graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education. Less

The records of the Council Tool Company document the history and operation of the North Carolina-based company from its founding by John Pickett Council in 1886 to the end of the twentieth century. The collection contains the company’s correspondence, financial records, and materials relating to personnel, plant operations, and merchandise. This collection also contains papers of the Council family spanning several generations, beginning in the early 1800s and with a few items from the 18th century. Correspondence, invoices, order letters, bills of lading, and related materials relate to the company’s operations including manufacturing, sales, transportation, information requests, and clientele. Financial records include accounting records, tax records, correspondence with accountants, records from the fire of October 20, 1970, and records relating to stocks. Accounting records include account books (ledgers), day books, trial balances, annual reviews of the company, and payroll ledgers. Office Files contain various information about the Council Tool Company and its operations, including correspondence, personnel files, catalogs and product information, machinery and equipment, inventories, notes and memoranda, and information about labor unions, insurance, and board meetings. Also included with the business records are files on the pulpwood industry, test hacks with accompanying reports, and maps and drawings. The family papers contain correspondence, financial records, and legal documents belonging to family members, including K. K. Council, John Pickett Council, K. Clyde Council, Edward L. Council, and Louise Council and a poem by Kinchin B. Council. Deeds and land grants, as well as correspondence about estates and property, constitute a substantial portion of the family papers. Council Tool Company is a family owned and operated business based in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina. The company was founded in 1886 by John Pickett Council, a turpentine producer and farmer in Bladen County, North Carolina. The company’s earliest product line featured tools used in the naval stores industry. When the naval stores industry began to wane, the company reacted by diversifying its product line. The company grew during the early decades of the twentieth century, surviving the Great Depression, two World Wars, and a devastating fire that destroyed much of the manufacturing plant. As of 2015, the company's full line of professional products included axes, picks, mauls, mattocks, striking tools, shrubbing tools, digging tools, wood-splitting tools, forged bars, C-clamps and a variety of specialty tools. The company has always been headed by a Council, and as of 2015, the president is John M. Council III. Less

The George Smart Papers, 1959-2004, document the professional activities of George McCollum Smart and his architectural firm. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, project files, professional papers, electronic files, and photographic materials. Drawings include blueprints, sketches, and working drawings, representing a variety of projects undertaken by Smart and his firm. Project files contain correspondence, financial records, contracts and agreements, building and land surveys, design narratives and specifications, material samples, and notes relating to Smart’s design, construction, and renovation projects. Professional papers primarily include reference material relating to the design of educational and church facilities, construction materials, standards, and codes. Photographic materials include prints, negatives, and slides depicting the design, construction, and completion of various projects, including several churches and schools. George McCollum Smart (1931-2003) was an architect based in Raleigh, North Carolina from the early 1960s to 2002. Smart was born in South Carolina and attended high school in Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Randolph-Macon College in 1952 and a Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State College in 1959. Smart received his certification to practice architecture from the North Carolina Board of Architecture in 1961. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects. Prior to opening his own architectural firm, Smart was employed by Holloway and Reeves, Haskins and Rice, and Walter Burgess. From approximately 1964 on Smart presided over his own firm and had a series of partners including Charles Woodall, Max Isley, Troy Herring, and Mete Gurel. Smart designed and renovated many buildings including churches, schools, and post offices, primarily in North Carolina. His firm was also active in the areas of asbestos removal and fireproofing of public buildings. Smart retired from practice in 2002 and died in 2003. Less

The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. Mattox was a talented amateur musician and director of the North Carolina State University R.O.T.C. Glee Club. Less

The Mary R. Boone Papers contain newspaper clippings, photographs, photocopies of newspaper clippings, articles, and cartoons relating to the proposed ratification of the Equal Rights amendment and Mary R. Barnes Boone's participation in a hunger strike in support of ratification. While the material is primarily focused on the hunger strike, documents relating to Boone's experiences as a feminist and supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment are also contained in the collection, including her correspondence with the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints regarding her views. An audioreel of Sonia Johnson's speech at North Carolina State University, and January 1983 edition of Life Magazine: The Year in Pictures are included in this collection, along with various ephemera related to the aforementioned topics. Mary R. Boone was a student at North Carolina State University in 1982, and she belonged to a group that brought Sonia Johnson to campus to speak. Johnson had just authored the book titled From Housewife to Heretic, an account of Johnson's personal journey as a previous member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a supporter of the Equal Rights Ammendment. Johnson's speech inspired Boone (then known as Mary Barnes) to join with six other women in a hunger strike to support the Equal Rights Amendment, then being considered by the states for ratification. Though the Equal Rights Ammendment failed to pass, the hunger strike generated much publicity and interest, even inciting sympathy fasts among supporters of the protest group. Less

Collection contains alumni recollections, photographs, and ephemeral materials documenting the student experience, World War II service, and other aspects of the lives of various alumni of North Carolina State University. The North Carolina State University Alumni/Student Collection was created by the Special Collections Research Center in 1996 to centralize future material relating to activities of University students. It was intended for this collection to have the value of a representative sample of these activities. The Park Scholarship records contains annual reports, clippings, correspondence, proposals, publications, some historical/biographical material on Roy H. Park, brochures, and a few artifacts. The material dates from 1938 to 2016.There are also some student records in box 3, which are closed to researchers. The Park Scholarships were established at North Carolina State University in 1996 with a grant from the Park Foundation of Ithaca, N.Y., to fund an inaugural class of 25 scholars. The Park Scholarships program was named for Roy H. Park, NC State University class of 1931. The Program was established to provide a superb educational opportunity for exceptionally talented and well-prepared young men and women who merit the intellectual challenge of a distinguished faculty and a superior university. The University Archives Reference Collection, Biographical Files contain clippings, University publications, copies of photographs, and other materials documenting faculty, staff, and alumni of North Carolina State University. This is an artificial collection, and is updated and maintained by Special Collections staff. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931 the College greatly reworked its curricula as it underwent consolidation. Along with North Carolina College for Women and the University of North Carolina, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina,. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system, having received university status, and, after some controversy, assumed its current name in 1965. As of 2007, N.C. State had a student body of nearly 30,000, nearly two thousand faculty, and research and program expenditures of over $440 million. Less

The Richard E. Nance papers contain correspondence, articles, technical reports and reprints, manuals, periodicals, video, and other materials documenting Nance's teaching, research, and professional service, 1950s-2004, in the field of computer simulation. Richard E. Nance received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1962 from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), followed by a Master of Science in 1964. Nance completed his Ph.D. at Purdue in 1968 and soon established himself as a founding leader in the field of computer simulation research. In addition, he taught at Southern Methodist University and Virginia Tech, served as a researcher for the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and participated in a variety of professional activities. Less

The photographs in the Alumni Association subgroup of the University Archives Photograph Collection document the organization's various activities and programs, including awards, scholarships, fundraising, alumni weekends, and homecoming. Homecoming photographs include tailgates, parades and floats, pep rallies, and homecoming queens and contestants. Photographs in this subgroup range in date from the 1930s to the late 1990s, the majority are from the 1950s through the 1970s and 1990s. The majority of photographs in the subgroup are in black-and-white. The Alumni Association of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanics Arts (North Carolina State University) was organized in June 1895, two years after the graduation of the first class. The association has worked from those earliest days to anticipate and fulfill the needs of the university. In 1987, as the university celebrated its centennial anniversary, the Alumni Association sponsored construction of the Alumni Centennial Gateway on Western Boulevard. The Alumni Association hosts various events including Homecoming, Legacy Luncheons, and Class Reunions.
