The J. Robert Cooke Papers contain a 1959 campaign button from Bob Cooke's campaign for student government vice president at NC State College, a 2013 video recording of an oral history interview in which Cooke recalls his life and career, and a 2017 listing of Cooke's publications and unpublished manuscripts and papers, and the Preface to the Directory of The Internet-First University Press, with cover letter, 2019. There are also historical materials compiled in 2022 on the occasion of Student Governments' Centennial. James Robert "Bob" Cooke served as vice president (1959-1960) and president (1960-1961) of Student Government at NC State College. He was active in numerous campus organizations such as Alpha Zeta, the College Union, and the Rules Committee. He graduated from NC State in 1961. In 1966 he began teaching at Cornell University. Correspondence includes letters about general cryptography, articles written by Levine and others, Levine's cryptographic patents book, and cryptographic computer tests. Research contains notes, computer printouts, article reprints, and note cards related to Levine's research interests in cryptography. Writings includes Levine's published and unpublished essays and pamphlets. Teaching Career includes class notes and other student-related material. Collected Works includes articles, books, and bibliographic information of other authors in the fields of mathematics and cryptography. Unprocessed Material contains copies of articles and publications on cryptography. Most of the materials are from Levine's lifetime, but some of the items in the Collected Works series are from as early as 1716. The Jack Levine Papers documents Levine's career as a crytographic researcher and mathematics professor at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1936 to 1995. The collection contains information on Levine's research, writings, university career, and correspondence. His main interests were tensor analysis, geometrics of generalized spaces, differential geometry, combinatorial analysis, theory of symmetric functions, algebraic cryptography and mathematical physics. The Jackson A. Rigney Papers, 1935-1981, include Rigney’s curriculum vitae, master’s thesis from Iowa State University, photographs, and programs from various North Carolina State University events. The majority of the collection contains reports, papers, and publications on agriculture, international programs, and institutional building. Also included are numerous certificates, plaques, and awards he received throughout his professional career, such as an honorary doctorate and outstanding alumni award from New Mexico State University. Jackson A. Rigney (1913-1998), a graduate of New Mexico A and M College and Iowa State University, joined the faculty of North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1938 as assistant professor in agronomy. He was appointed head of the Department of Experimental Statistics in 1949, and Dean of International Programs in 1968. He Served as interim chancellor during 1975. Rigney retired from North Carolina State University in 1981. He was the author of numerous publications and reports on agriculture and international development. In addition, he also received many awards and recognitions for his contributions to the university and to the fields of agriculture and statistics. Less

This collection contains sample books of fabrics, yarns, weaving patterns, and other textiles and textile-related material. The majority of these materials are in German. The collection also includes manuals and correspondence related to Qiana nylon, a polyamide fabric developed by DuPont in the 1960s. The James B. Hunt Papers, 1945, 1953-2018 include videotapes, films, compact discs, audiotapes, photographs, correspondence, speeches, news clippings, ad slicks, position papers, advertisement scripts, cue sheets, stickers, buttons, artifacts, and brochures relating to the personal life and political campaigns of James Baxter Hunt Jr., who was a Democratic lieutenant governor, 1973-1976, and four-term governor of North Carolina, 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. The largest portion of the collection is manuscripts, which feature debates, speeches, correspondences, advertisements and personal notes. The bulk of the materials include Hunt’s 1976 and 1980 gubernatorial campaigns, his unsuccessful 1984 bid to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United State Senator from North Carolina, and his 1992 and 1996 gubernatorial campaigns. Also included are materials documenting Hunt’s acts post-governorship, including the establishment of the Smart Start program, the Institute for Emerging Issues, and The Hunt Institute. Not included are any materials specifically documenting Hunt’s official acts as governor. James Baxter Hunt, Jr. (1937- ) was the Democratic governor of North Carolina from 1977 to 1985 and 1993 to 2001. After serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1973 to 1977, he served two terms as Governor, from 1977 to 1981 and 1981 to 1985. In 1984 he waged an unsuccessful campaign to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United States Senator from North Carolina. The closely contested race, which Helms eventually won with 52% of the vote, garnered national attention as both sides engaged in negative campaigning. The campaign ultimately cost a combined $22 million, making it the most expensive Senate race in American history to that point. Hunt returned to elected office in 1993, winning a third term as Governor by defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor James C. Gardner. In 1996, he was elected to a fourth term over Republican state Representative Robin Hayes. Hunt left the office of the governor in 2001. Less

The James Craig Edsall Papers contain examinations, quizzes, laboratory exercises, problem sets, syllabi, course handouts, and class notes, 1969-1974, when Edsall was an undergraduate student in industrial engineering at North Carolina State University. The James Cullen Williams Orchid Collection contains books and journals about orchids. Journal titles include runs of American Orchid Society Awards Quarterly, American Orchid Society Bulletin, and The Orchid Advocate: Official Journal of The Cymbidium Society of America, Inc., to name a few. Materials range in date from 1868 to 2004. James Cullen Williams was a graduate of the Mercer University’s School of Pharmacy Class of 1962. He lived in Lake Wales, Florida and was a practicing pharmacist there for 50 years. He was also an orchid grower and an accredited judge for the American Orchid Society. Less

The James Edgar Smallwood Papers primarily consist of teaching materials (articles, drawings and diagrams, handwritten notes, and syllabi) and related items, such as slides, X-rays, and audiovisual materials, that Dr. Smallwood used during his long tenure as a faculty member at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University. Also included are materials related to Smallwood's participation in professional organizations, including the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. James Edgar (Ed) Smallwood was a Professor of Gross Anatomy in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University. He earned a M.S. in Veterinary Anatomy at Texas A & M University in 1972 and his D.V.M. at Texas A & M University in 1969. Dr. Smallwood also served as the Senior Executive Director of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Society. He was also a member of the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists (1972 - present, President, 1988-1989); the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists (1977 - present; President, 1995-1999); the American Veterinary Medical Association (1969 - present); and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (1981 - present). The James F. Wright Papers contains membership lists, meeting minutes, and correspondence of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), as well as case reports presented to the Association. Other materials include professional correspondence, reports, notes, articles, and five 16 mm films relating to early use of dart guns and tranquilizing agents. The collection also contains professional certificates, yearbooks from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and pages from a scrapbook. Most materials date from the late 1950s to early 1970s, with a few earlier and later items. James F. Wright was an honorary diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and a researcher in the field of zoological health. He served on the faculty of N.C. State University from 1984 to 2004, and he was a pathologist and consulting clinical veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoological Park. He was the first clinical veterinarian at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and helped establish a national zoo in Senegal, Africa. He is notable for his contribution to refining early dart guns and tranquilizing agents. In addition to the American College of Zoological Medicine, he was a member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Wildlife Disease Association, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Society of Toxicologic Pathologists, American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums, and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. The James Fitzgibbon Papers includes architect and North Carolina State University School of Design professor James Fitzgibbon’s architectural drawings for the Ralph Fadum House of Raleigh, North Carolina, the George W. Paschal House, also of Raleigh, the Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Daniel House of Knoxville, Tennessee, and photographs and study models from his time working at Synergetics Inc. The collection includes color spot sketches of the exterior; site plans; working drawings; floor plans; shop drawings and blueprints and two undated drawings (1 sketch of interior elevation and 1 floor plan of 617 Kirby Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.); photographs by Joseph Molitor of the Fadum House; two models of the Globe Playhouse; photographs of study models and articles. James Walter Fitzgibbon (1915-1985) helped found the School of Design at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1948. Fitzgibbon was hired as the associate architect for campus planning during the School of Design’s inception. He also served as a professor of architecture at North Carolina State College from 1948 to 1953. Fitzgibbon later served as president of Synergetics Inc., an association of Raleigh architects and engineers, before taking a position with Washington University in St. Louis. Fitzgibbon returned to the School of Design in 1967, serving for one year. Less

The James K. Ferrell Papers, 1940-2000, include publications, reports, memoranda, a scrapbook, and other items demonstrating the history of the North Carolina State University Dept. of Chemical Engineering and the North Carolina State University College of Engineering (formerly the School of Engineering); annual reports, memoranda, correspondence, proposals, reviews, and other items related to the administration of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering, the College of Engineering, and the Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC); and research papers, proceedings, reports, publications, and slides produced through or related to Ferrell's research projects in chemical engineering, the bulk of which pertains to his work on two-phase flow and coal gasification. James K. Ferrell (1923-2001) received the first doctoral degree awarded in chemical engineering by North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1954. After working in industry, Ferrell returned to NC State in 1956. He became a full professor in 1961 and served as head of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering from 1966 to 1980. In 1965, Ferrell was instrumental in bringing the Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC) to fruition, a mainframe system that served NC State along with Duke University, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and Research Triangle Park. The James L. Brandt Papers (1948-2012) contains files on Frank Lloyd Wright's visit to NC State in May 1950, on School of Design Dean Henry Kamphoefner, and on the Student Publication of the School of Design. It also contains biographical information about Brandt. Additional items include photographs, slides, correspondence, drawings, and other papers belonging to James Brandt. James L. (Lewis) Brandt was born in Brooksville, Mississippi, on 20 September 1926. He grew up in Washington, Durham, and Greenville, all in North Carolina, and he graduated from Greenville High School. In 1944 he enlisted in the Navy, and he was discharged in 1946. In 1948 he enrolled in the North Carolina State College School of Design, and he graduated with a B. A. in Architecture in 1951. Beginning in 1952 he worked for architect G. Milton Small. He retired professionally in 1991, and he passed away on 6 February 2012. Less

The James N. Sherrill Architectural Drawings contain the architectural drawings of James N. Sherrill from 1956 to 1968 with most buildings located in Hickory, North Carolina but a few in other locations such as Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Most of the drawings are for homes and residences of local families. However, one set shows the drawings for the Addition to Gardner Hall at North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1964. James N. Sherrill was an American Institute of Architects (AIA) architect who was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1925. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1943 and spent three years in the Navy before beginning the Architectural Engineering program at North Carolina State University in 1946. He graduated from what became the School of Design in 1951. After interning for several Raleigh architects, he worked for Clemmer and Horton in Hickory, North Carolina, from 1953 to 1958. Four of his buildings designed while there won American Institute of Architects North Carolina (AIANC) awards. Sherrill started his own firm in 1958. He won another AIANC design award in 1962 for a Northwestern Bank branch in Hickory. He designed an addition to Gardner Hall (now Thomas Hall) on the North Carolina State University campus in 1965 that was completed in 1967. Sherrill passed away on 2012 May 9. Less

The James O. Henriksen Papers contain letters and correspondence, software-related lectures, articles, books, and other materials related to James O. Henriksen's career in computer simulation and computer science from the early 1960s into the 2000s. The collection provides information on the program that Henriksen created called GPSS/H, his other endeavors related to computer simulation, and some information about his company, Wolverine Software. The materials in this collection also show Henriksen's involvement with other indivuduals in the field of computer simulation, his time as a teacher, and correspondence from users of his GPSS/H software. Materials range from 1963 to 2016. James "Jim" O. Henriksen (1945-2019) was the founder and CEO of Wolverine Software Corporation, which he established in 1976. During his career, he developed GPSS/H for IBM mainframes in 1977, enabling the continuing support of a major simulation programming language. The first commercial installation of GPSS/H was made at General Motors Manufacturing Department, and in the following years the application was expanded and improved. Wolverine also developed other software innovations, including Proof Animation, which was introduced in 1989, and SLX, the extensible simulation language, a later product. Less

The James William Clark Papers consist of correspondence and publications by Clark. The papers also contain brochures and pamphlets relating to the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame, including the inductions of Guy Owen and Richard Walser. Materials range in date from 1985 to 2020. James W. Clark, Jr. (1943- ), was the director of Humanities Extension at North Carolina State University beginning in 1993 and taught in the English Department beginning in 1967. Clark received his bachelor's degree in English from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (1965), and his master's degree (1967) and Ph. D. (1970) in English from Duke University. He has authored numerous publications, including Clover All Over. He has been involved in various professional associations, including the Thomas Wolfe Society. He was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2017 and won the 2020 John Tyler Caldwell Award for the Humanities — the North Carolina Humanities Council’s most prestigious honor. Less

The collection contains the business and design records from James M. Webb's architectural firm, as well as his personal papers and some papers of his brother, John B. Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

This collection consists of personal writings, correspondence, biographical accounts, news clippings, and scripts from radio show broadcasts. They cover topics of food preparation and home demonstration marketing and development. Papers on McKimmon's awards, retirement, and death are also included. Jane Simpson McKimmon was born November 13, 1867 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated from the Peace Institute at 16 years old, and spent her time leading home demonstrations and serving as the State Director of the women's divsion of the Farmers Institute. Her outstanding work in educating women in home demonstration techniques eventually lead to her appointment as the State Home Demonstration Agent in 1911. In conjunction with her work, she strongly believed in continuing her education and soon earned B.S. (1926) and M.S. (1929) degrees from North Carolina State University. After her retirement in 1937, McKimmon continued to serve as the Assistant Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. Her great contributions to home demonstration programs garnered her many awards and also an honorary doctor of law degree from the University of North Carolina. Less
