Architectural drawings, 1951-1986, of buildings at Campbell College in Buies Creek, North Carolina, at North Carolina State University, and other buildings. Raymond Cecil Sawyer (1925-2018) was a modernist architect, who practiced mainly in North Carolina. After graduating from N.C. State College's School of Design, Sawyer worked with Alfred Lublin in Norfolk, Virginia, and with Owen Smith and Jim Webb before returning to Raleigh to work with Terry Waugh, becoming an associate and then partner. When Waugh returned to the faculty of the NC State University School of Design, Sawyer formed his own private practice, designing homes and other buildings. Sawyer worked on numerous projects at NC State University, including the University Theater. He also worked on projects around North Carolina, designing the Historic Bath Visitor Center and the gunboat cradle for the CSS Neuse, a Confederate ship in Kinston, North Carolina. He designed projects for Campbell University, Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, and, as a member of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission, designed hospital units throughout the state. The Reginald D. Tillson Landscape Architecture Papers contains drawings, sketches, specifications, correspondence, notes, plant guides, and other materials that document the landscape design work of Tillson from the 1920s to the 1970s. The collection also contains an oral history interview of his son, David Tillson, in 2016. These materials encompass Tillson's work as a landscape architect, creating designs for small-scale residential locations, large-scale private subdivision, public parks, public housing projects, schools, churches, and hospitals. The collection represents Tillson's work throughout the southeastern United States, with the majority of the projects based in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region. The earlier materials from 1906 to 1928 demonstrate Tillson's beginnings in landscape architecture while gaining knowledge and experience in the field. The bulk of the collection covers Tillson's career as a practicing landscape architect between 1928 and 1969. The collection ranges from 1906 to 2016. Reginald D. Tillson was a landscape architect in High Point, North Carolina, who designed significant improvements to the built environment of High Point and other communities of the Piedmont Triad area. His early career focused on residential design work for the wealthy and upper-middle-class residents of High Point, which at the time was a prosperous center of the textile and furniture industries. In the 1950s and following decades, as North Carolina's population grew and planning and development trends evolved, Tillson's work grew in scale and complexity. He designed dozens of subdivisions and grounds for schools, churches, and hospitals. Overall, his career provides a unique view into planning and landscape architecture practice in the Southeast during decades of immense technological and social change. Less

The collection contains a scrapbook, letters, photographs, clippings, and other items documenting the life and military service of Reid Grover Parks of Davidson County, North Carolina. The scrapbook includes certificates and diplomas from Parks' childhood, high school and college years. It also contains military records and numerous letters documenting his service as a pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. In addition to the scrapbook, there are about 25 photographs and a few other items, mostly from the period of Parks' military service. Reid Grover Parks (1923-1945) of Davidson County, North Carolina, served as a pilot in the United States Army Air Forces. Based in Foggia, Italy, from November 1944 to February 1945, he flew 28 missions as pilot of a B-24 Liberator bomber in the 325th Bomb Squadron. Less

The Reinard Harkema papers contain student recommendations, student photos, professional correspondence, and other professional papers associated with Harkema's tenure as professor of zoology at North Carolina State University, 1936 to 1978. Letters make up the bulk of the written collection, with notable correspondence between Harkema and David A. Becker, Alva Harris, Reginald D. Manwell, and Sturgis McKeever. Other material includes handbooks, programs, and proceedings from various North Carolina Academy of Science events and meetings; and a photograph album with pictures of Harkema's comparative anatomy classes between 1966 and 1975. Reinard Harkema (1910-1978) received his A.B. from Calvin College and his Ph.D. in 1935 from Duke University. Harkema taught at North Carolina State University from 1936 to 1978 as professor of zoology with a specialization in parasitology of wild animals. In addition to classroom teaching, he headed the pre-dental and pre-medical program in the Department of Zoology. During World War II he served in the United States Medical Corps as a parasitologist, and was a consultant to the Air Force following the war. In 1956, Dr. Harkema was elected president of the North Carolina Academy of Sciences, and in 1969 he received the NC State University Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor Award. Less

The Richard Mansmann Papers, 1966-2018, contain correspondence, research files, graduate student information, course files, newsletters, brochures, and magazines related to Mansmann's career in veterinary medicine specializing in equine health. Also included in this collection are articles and book chapters from Mansmann's published work, annual reports, employee files, and office files. Richard A. Mansmann, DVM, Ph.D., is the Director of Outreach for, and founding Director of, the Equine Health Program at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He authored several books including Equine Medicine and Surgery (3rd. ed.), and is an expert in equine podiatry, metabolic and respiratory treatment, rehabilitation, lameness prevention, and equine disaster medicine. This collection contains Richard A. Moore’s personal and professional papers from his work as a landscape architect. The collection includes documents from the entire range of his career until 2003, including papers documenting his landscape architectural work, drawings, and personal correspondence. Many of his projects include both residential and commercial landscape architectural work in North Carolina, Hawaii, Iran, and Washington D.C., and this collection also contains administrative paperwork from his firms and universities. Many of the project categories are residential subdivisions, garden designs, and federal buildings; specific projects include the Fayetteville Market Square, Mililani Town, and Lanai city. The Richard B. Schnedl Papers, 1896-2011, document the professional activities of architect Richard Burke Schnedl and his architectural firms. The collection contains drawings and plans for a number of Schnedl’s projects and several historic buildings designed by other architects, which include site plans, floor plans, electrical and plumbing plans, elevations, sections, and details. The remaining records are grouped as project files, office records, and personal papers. North Carolina-based architect Richard Burke Schnedl specialized in residential design, especially at Bald Head Island, North Carolina. Schnedl received a B.Arch. from North Carolina State College and went on to work with Leslie N. Boney, Edwin Schnedl (Schnedl & Schnedl), Hayes, Howell & Associates, and later ran his own firm called Richard B. Schnedl, Architect and Richard B. Schnedl & Partner (later John W. The Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials, 1924-2017, document the professional activities of landscape architect Richard C. Bell. The collection consists of landscape plans and planting details, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and web content, as well as associated architecture plans created by partnering architectural firms. A small number of project files, which document both residential and public spaces, are also found in the collection. Bell’s projects include private residences, subdivision developments, municipal and civic structures, various businesses, and some two dozen college and universities. Richard C. (Richard Chevalier) Bell (1928- ), a native of Manteo, N.C., received a degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University's College of Design (then, the North Carolina State College School of Design) in 1950. Afterwards, he apprenticed under Simonds & Simonds of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frederick B. Stresau of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At the age of 21, he became the youngest designer to receive the Prix de Rome, allowing him to study in Europe for two years. He became a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In 1954, Bell became a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and he was elected to Fellowship in the organization in 1980. In 1955, Bell founded his first firm in Raleigh, N.C., and for many years operated the business from its award-winning office space, Water Garden Office Park. His son-in-law Dennis Glazener worked for the firm, and eventually became a partner. Bell retired in 2007. Less

Most are unpublished papers prepared in the late 1970s and early 1980s for presentation at meetings of the Popular Culture Association, Science Fiction Research Association, Society for Utopian Studies, and other organizations. A few reprints of published articles are included. Among the papers are several about Robert Silverberg, Kurt Vonnegut, the city in science fiction, and utopias and dystopias in science fiction. The Richard E. Nance papers contain correspondence, articles, technical reports and reprints, manuals, periodicals, video, and other materials documenting Nance's teaching, research, and professional service, 1950s-2004, in the field of computer simulation. Richard E. Nance received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1962 from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), followed by a Master of Science in 1964. Nance completed his Ph.D. at Purdue in 1968 and soon established himself as a founding leader in the field of computer simulation research. In addition, he taught at Southern Methodist University and Virginia Tech, served as a researcher for the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and participated in a variety of professional activities. Less

Personal papers, manuscripts, correspondence, publications, Watauga Club minutes, news clippings, and books of Richard Gaither Walser. The collection chiefly reflects Walser's work as an authority on North Carolina literature and a scholar of Thomas Wolfe. Included are personal items, such as passports, articles on and some writing by Zeb Vance Walser (his father), alumni-related items from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and items relating to Walser's retirement from North Carolina State University. There are also publications and reviews by and about Richard Walser. The Thomas Wolfe material contains reviews of Walser's books on Wolfe, correspondence pertaining to the writing of these books, and an issue of The Thomas Wolfe Review honoring Richard Walser (Vol. 6, No. 2, Fall 1982). Correspondence and speeches span the years from 1970 to 1981. Brief biographies of significant North Carolina authors, including Lodwick Hartley and Guy Owen are also included. The Watauga Club material includes a manuscript for the history of the club and some sources for this history, as well as minutes, reports, financial records, a constitution and membership lists. An unprocessed box of Walser's papers and many boxes of his books are also included. Richard Gaither Walser (1908-1988) was an authority on North Carolina literature, Thomas Wolfe scholar, English professor at North Carolina State University, writer, editor, and anthologist, veteran of the Naval Reserve (1942-1945), Guggenheim fellow, and recipient of the North Carolina Award. Richard Hall is a Raleigh architect who worked on a number of older homes (circa 1930) in North Carolina, and especially Raleigh, during his career. In doing so, he collected a number of architectural plans and project files that comprise the Richard Hall Architectural Drawings Collection. Richard Hall is a Raleigh architect who graduated from the NC State University School of Design in 1987. He was born in Middleborough, Kentucky, and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982. Less

The Richard M. Felder Papers contain copies of articles that Felder authored on chemical engineering and on teaching, teaching aids, booklets, correspondence, newspaper and magazine article clippings, research files, projects reports, personal materials, text copies of presentations he gave, other miscellaneous paper files, a video of one of his presentations, and three plaques representing awards Felder received. The collection also include his kindergarten graduation certificate and honorary degrees that he received from various US Universities. The collection includes a few materials in Italian and Portuguese languages. Richard M. Felder joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University in 1969. He is currently (2021) Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus in the department. Less

The Richard Montali Papers document Montali's 29-year career as the chief veterinary pathologist at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., as well as his work at the Taronga Zoo in Australia, at Johns Hopkins Medical School, with the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Also documented are many conferences Montali attended or presented at. The collection includes slides, photographs, reports, conference proceedings, and other research materials. While the majority of the collection has documents ranging from the 1970s through to the 2010s, there are a few items that date back as far as 1908. Richard Montali worked for 29 years as Chief Pathologist for the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., where he performed diagnostic pathology, investigated zoo animal and wildlife diseases, and provided residency training for veterinarians working in zoo and wildlife pathology. Montali has written (or co-authored) more than 240 scientific articles about zoo and wild animal diseases. His research interests have included infectious diseases of carnivores (especially red and giant pandas), New World primates (especially tamarins and marmosets), and ungulates (especially elephants and black rhinoceros) with an emphasis on mycobacterial and viral infections. This collection contains several photographs of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts 1904 graduating class, as well as collected materials documenting the organization of that class's reunions between 1929 and 1974. Risden Patterson Reece was a member of the Class of 1904 at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (North Carolina State University) and worked for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Throughout his life, Reece was active in the North Carolina State Alumni Association and helped organize reunions for the Class of 1904 through the mid-1970s. Less

This collection contains files on Rice's teaching in the Department of Engineering at North Carolina State College (later University), as well as papers relating to his involvement with various branches of the United States Armed Forces. Types of materials include paper files, blueprints, and photographs. Robert Barton Rice was administrator, teacher, and engineering consultant. During World War II, Rice directed the Naval Diesel School, a designated North Carolina State College training facility for national defense. While teaching at North Carolina State College (later University) in 1950, Rice and two partners formed Enginerring Development Associates, a corporation offering services in design, construction, supervision, and consultation in many branches of engineering and architecture. The Robert Burns Architectural Drawings include nine architectural drawings by Robert Paschal Burns (1933-2005) that were transfered from the College of Design to Special Collections through the assistance of Dean Marvin Malecha. They include a set of 4 drawings of an international airport from 1957 that Burns had submitted for the 44th Paris Prize in Architecture. He won the competition and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. To support his international travel, Burns had been awarded the Lloyd Warren Fellowship in 1957 while he was a student at North Carolina State College. The collection also includes 3 undated drawings for an apartment hotel development in Raleigh and 2 undated drawings for a Highway Island Development (these last two are likely by Burns, but his name is not on the drawings). This collection also contains slides from Burns' classes, studio and architectural travel. Professor Robert Paschal Burns (1933-2005), a native of Roxboro, North Carolina, was the head of the Architecture Department at NC State University's School of Design from 1967 to 1974 and from 1983 to 1991. He was selected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1979 and was awarded the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence in 1996. The Robert C. Browning Papers contains material from the professional engineering work of Robert C. Browning, and his father, R. Getty Browning. Robert C. Browning's materials contain project files, drawings, project photographs, engineering instruments related to his work as a consulting engineer. The project files are a sampling of Browning's engineering projects from the 1950s until the mid-1990s. His projects are mainly located at hospitals, colleges, and warehouse facilities. The types of documents found most often in Browning's project files are notes, sketches, working drawings, specifications, correspondence, budgeting and costs, engineering standards, and equipment catalogs. The equipment catalogs were put out by the manufacturers of machines and industrial equipment that Browning either installed or considered installing in project locations. Browning's collection also contains a box of personal information. This box includes diplomas, conferences attended, papers given, and Browning's resume at various points in his career. Also included is a profile of the Robert C. Browning Consulting Firm and a projects list. Engineering drawings in the Robert Browning Collection are shop drawings or blue prints. Some are drawn in the original pencil, others are copies. Copies of drawings often contain new revisions and added notes. The drawings illustrate plans for plumbing, electrical, lighting, structural, floor plans, exhaust, air conditioning, and heating. The Robert C. Browning Papers also include are materials from R. Getty Browning's work as Chief Locating Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (previously named Highway Commission). Included in the collection are project files, biographical papers, and artifacts. In the project files are materials relating to Getty Browning's work in the planning and construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. These files contain correspondence, notes, maps, sketches, photographs and publicity materials. Biographical papers include newspaper clippings, photographs and publicity created by or about Getty Browning before and after his death. Also included are papers related to his work in the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The artifacts in the collection are engineering and surveying equipment used by Getty Browning. Robert C. Browning (1919-2007) and his father, R. Getty Browning (1884-1966), worked as engineers in North Carolina. Robert C. Browning earned a degree in consulting engineering from North Carolina State University in 1941. After serving in the Army as an engineer during World War II, Browning came back to the United States and started his own consulting engineering firm. As a consulting engineer, Robert C. Browning worked on the construction and renovations of schools, hospitals, industrial plants, and commercial buildings from 1953 until the mid-1990s. Projects at these locations included air conditioning, plumbing, heating, electrical, communications, storm drainage, water and sewer, grading, site planning, structural, central heating plants, steam distribution systems, highway right-of way acquisition, claims investigations, and highway location. R. Getty Browning worked as the Chief Locating Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation from 1925 to 1958. He is best known for planning the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina starting in 1934. Less
