MoreThe Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill Collection of Papers and Artifacts contains exhibit labels, a drawing, Articles of Agreement, and an iron spindle, all pertaining to the Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill, the first textile mill in North Carolina. Materials range in date from 1813 to 1871, with some documentation dating from 1991. The first textile mill in North Carolina was built before 1813 in Lincoln County, 1.5 miles east of Lincolnton. Michael Schenck built the mill and later partnered with Absolom Warlick to build a second in 1816. Through the 1820s and 1830s the profitable operation of the Schenck mills was a model to many more in North Carolina. The Schenck-Warlick Mill firmly established the Southern Textile industry.

MorePapers and audiovisual materials documenting Scott Chilton’s botanical research, teaching career, and personal life. This includes notebooks, research and laboratory data, articles, news clippings, collected works, Chilton’s own writings and publications, course materials, correspondence, legal documents, slides, photographs, and VHS video recordings. The collection’s contents date from between 1917 and 2004, but the bulk of the collection dates from after the mid-1960s. After completing his education and serving in the United States Navy, William Scott Chilton began teaching at the University of Washington. He moved to Washington University-St. Louis before beginning his employment in North Carolina State University's Botany Department in 1983. A natural products chemist, Chilton distinguished himself in research focused upon the phytochemistry, fungi, and plant-associate microbes, the structure of novel amino acids, and ethnobotanical uses of plants. He was well known for his research on a number of topics, including mushroom toxins, crown-gall metabolites, and the corn toxin DIMBOA. Chilton continued to teach and work in his phytochemistry lab after his retirement from NC State University in 2003. He died suddenly while hiking in August 2004.

There is some information on Poultry Science faculty members and staff. Also included is a book that Curtin wrote about growing up near Weaverville, North Carolina, and photographs and a DVD showing her husband, Terrence M. Curtin, in 2020. Diane Sharon Saunders was born in Weaverville, North Carolina, in 1942. She came to NC State University in the 1960s and worked as a research technician in the Department of Poultry Science labs under Dr. Pat B. Hamilton for many years. From 1981 to 1986, she was in the microbiology lab of the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1987, she married Dean Terry of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, was formed in 1886 at Cornell University as an honor society for science and engineering; the original founders of Sigma Xi were members of the Sibley College of Mechanical Engineering at the university. Moving beyond the Society's early intention of fostering companionship, Sigma Xi has since evolved to offer the sciences a strong, unified voice in support of scientific advancement and achievement.

MoreThe Slater Newman Papers, 1932-2014, contains notes, correspondence, administrative records, and other papers from the career of Slater E. Newman (1924-2015), academic cognitive psychologist and human rights organizer. The bulk of the materials in the collection were created between 1957, when Newman joined the North Carolina State University Department of Psychology, and 2014. Earlier papers relate to Newman's education and early career in research, teaching, and the United States military. Newman founded, led, and participated in many professional and human rights organizations; papers related to these organizational involvements, along with Newman's teaching and research files and his vast correspondence with fellow academics and activists, form the majority of the collection. Physically, most of the materials are typed and handwritten loose pages, notebooks, and computer printouts; there are also some newspaper clippings and bound volumes, and a small number of photographs and artifacts. Academic psychologist and human rights activist Slater E. Newman (1924-2015) was a member of the psychology faculty at North Carolina State University from 1957 to his retirement in 2003. In his research in cognitive psychology Newman investigated learning and memory, focusing in his later work on how people learn Braille and other tactile alphabets. He was an active member and leader in several professional organizations of psychologists. In addition to his academic research, Newman was deeply involved in human rights organizing. His first political projects represented in this collection dealt with academic freedom, but a major theme of his activism was international human rights, in particular promoting United States ratification of United Nations conventions. Newman helped to found and lead a number of human rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union affiliate in North Carolina and the Human Rights Coalition of North Carolina. At NC State University, he advocated for annual campus events teaching about and celebrating human rights.

MoreStanley Backer (1920-2003) attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning degrees in engineering and textile technology. He joined the faculty at M.I.T. in 1951 and eventually became the head of the Fibers and Polymers Laboratory. His research in textiles engineering led to a greater understanding of fiber structure and fabric behavior. Backer also led a program to develop one of the first online information retrieval systems, known as the Textile Information Retrieval Product. He died in 2003. Stanley Backer's papers consist of articles, books, papers, theses and other material reflecting his textile engineering research while attending and teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A Research Files series contains collected information on fabric mechanics, texturing, and other topics. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Special Program series contains material on programs in which Backer had participated. The Supervised Theses series includes those supervised by Backer while a professor at M.I.T. A series of Backer's published works is also included, as well as a list of his collected works.

In 1967 he became the first NC State faculty member elected to the National Academy of Sciences. He retired in 1974 as a professor emeritus after 25 years at the university.

Also contained in this collection are Noblin's personal papers from his involvement in the North Carolina Chess Association. Stuart Noblin was a professor in the Departments of History and Political Science at North Carolina State University from 1947 to 1976. He also served as part-time University Archivist from 1957 to 1964, as well as chairman of the Committee on the History of the College, and was a member of the Faculty Senate from 1957 to 1961. Noblin was also active in the North Carolina Chess Association.

A significant portion of the collection documents Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf’s research and clinical work in the field of zoological health, environmental medicine, and veterinary medicine. Other materials document Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf’s professional activities in organizations such as the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM), the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA), the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), and the International Association of Aquatic Animal Medicine (IAAAM), among others. The remainder of the collection contains papers highlighting her role as faculty member for the NC State University, College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Department of Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology. The collection ranges in date from 1968 to 2017. Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf is well-known for her role as the first female veterinarian at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and the first full time female faculty member specializing in zoological medicine in North America. In 1990, Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf joined the NC State University CVM faculty in the Department of Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology. During her tenure at the CVM, she co-founded and directed the country’s first three-year residency in zoological medicine. As of 2016, she is a research professor with NC State University's Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology program, an intercollegiate degree program administered by the CVM, the College of Natural Resources and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. During this time, she has also conducted extensive clinical and research studies with an emphasis on infectious diseases, immunology, and environmental medicine, specifically relating to aquatic animal, feline, amphibian, and avian populations. Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf has quite an extensive role in several veterinary medicine organizations across the country, including the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Among the drawings and records are plans for geodesic and other domes in North Carolina, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, Florida, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Afghanistan. The architectural drawings showcase dome engineering, such as geodesic domes, octetrusses, and Charter-Sphere Domes. Thomas C. Howard (1931- ) was the designer, architect, and engineer for Synergetics, Inc. from 1955 until 2006. In 1958 Howard graduated from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in nuclear engineering. He became a registered architect in North Carolina in 1958.

Materials range in dates from 1951 to 2012 with the bulk of the materials falling between 1968 and 2004. Dr. Terrence M. Curtin, 1926-2020, came to North Carolina State University in 1973 to start a veterinary science department in the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He was appointed the first dean of the new School (later College) of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University on Feb. 1, 1979.

MoreTextile industry-produced marketing materials, reports, brochures, catalogs, etc., complete, in many cases, with textile samples documenting the effectiveness of particular dyestuffs on the various fabrics. Also included are a small number of government documents. The Institute of Textile Technology transferred its library to North Carolina State University's Burlington Textiles Library when it moved its operations to the NC State University Centennial Campus. The Burlington Textiles Library had maintained for years a vertical file for quick reference. After the merger of the two libraries, the Burlington Textiles Library transferred the historically valuable materials from both collections to the NC State University Libraries Special Collections Research Center.
