MoreThe Polk Family Papers, 1850-1961, contain correspondence, newspaper articles, recipes, printed booklets, typed manuscripts, and a nineteenth-century memory book relating to the personal life and professional activities of Leonidas Lafayette Polk and members and friends of his family. Included are a small number of documents concerning Polk's daughter Juanita Polk Denmark and the Turrentine family of Hillsborough, North Carolina. Polk family of North Carolina includes Leonidas Lafayette Polk (1837-1892), who was a North Carolina government official, Civil War veteran, politician, farmer, businessman, and journalist. Throughout his career, Polk supported and led campaigns on behalf of educational institutions and agricultural development. He organized the state's farmers to lobby for a state agricultural college; joined with the Watauga Club, they successfully established the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1887.

There is some material from 1926 in the folder for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and various materials from 2009 and 2013. There are materials that relate to the administration of the organization itself as well as various campaigns they coordinated with, people they collaborated with, papers or lectures, and various educational endeavors. Much of the material was created by Kenneth Shapiro, the President of the Board of Directors, and included are his papers, lectures, and articles published in various journals and magazines. In 2005 the organization changed its name to Society & Animals Forum as documented in the third series.

As a student, Rabb joined the Department of Entomology as an Assistant Entomologist. After he graduated, the Department hired Rabb as Assistant Professor. These materials were given to North Carolina State University Libraries by the Raleigh Development Company, which holds the original documents. Architectural historians consider the office building at 333 Fayetteville Street, Raleigh, North Carolina to be a classic example of mid-twentieth century modernism in the state. The building was designed in 1963 by the architectural firm Emery Roth and Sons, with assistance by local architect G. Milton Small, Jr. Construction on the building was completed in 1965 and it was originally known as the BB&T Building after its first tenant. The building's original owner was John McCarthy; the Raleigh Development Company acquired it in the years shortly after 2000.

MoreThis collection chiefly documents Ralph Clay Swann's work as Technical Director at the Redstone Arsenal Ordnance Missile Laboratories in Huntsville, Alabama, where he was responsible for the planning and execution of rocket propulsion research and solid propulsion development. Contained in the files are news clippings, photographs, certificates, citations, lectures and speeches given by Swann. A few items relate to Swann's education, to his work in private industry, or to his work at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). Born in West Virginia in 1912, Ralph Swann received a B.S. in chemistry from Morris Harvey College and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Swann was a research chemist and director of research in private industry from 1933 to 1951. He served as Deputy Chief, Assistant Director and Technical Director of the Ordnance Missile Laboratories, Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama, 1953-1961. As Director, he was responsible for the planning and execution of rocket propulsion research and solid propulsion development. In January 1961, Dr. Swann came to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as Head of the Chemistry Department. He worked in that capacity until his death in 1967.

The majority of the collection consists speeches and press releases. It also includes correspondence, research notes, awards, news articles, and photographs relating to Fadum's professional career as well as family and travel photographs from after his retirement. Fadum's consulting work, as well as his involvement in military projects and with the American Society of Civil Engineers. Ralph E. Fadum was born on July 19, 1912, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Niagara Falls, New York. He came to North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1949 as a Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, holding this position until 1962. Dr. Fadum became the Dean of Engineering on July 1, 1962, serving the University until his retirement in 1978. Fadum was an adviser to many government agencies including the United States Department of Defense, United States Department of the Army, United State Air Force, National Science Foundation, and United States Department of Transportation. As a consultant, he was involved in solving many complex geotechnical problems, such as the construction of airfields in Greenland; the Alaska pipeline; launch facilities for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Apollo Project; the development of the road test program of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials; landslide stabilization for the Panama Canal; the construction of underground ICBM missile silos that could withstand nuclear blast effects; and the development of foundation requirements for radar stations in the North American Defense System. Fadum also had a strong interest in athletics. He served twice as president of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and a four-year term as vice president of District 3 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Materials date from 1942 to 1969. Ralph E. Mullendore worked for the United States Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland, where he was a member of the team working on the nation's first computer, UNIVAC I. He worked for the bureau as a computer diagnostician and troubleshooter, retiring in 1984 after 33 years. He served in the United States Marine Corps and then as a Navy officer, attaining the rank of the commander. During World War II, he developed and patented an azimuth finder, a navigational aid used aboard Navy vessels. Mullendore was one of 70 members of the main development team for the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII).

The collection also contains the personal papers and letters of Ralph Cummings and the Cummings family papers which include a number of land deeds and legal documents dating from 1840 until 2001 as well as the personal papers of extended family members. Ralph W. Cummings (1911-2001) was born in Reidsville, North Carolina. He was the head of the Department of Agronomy at North Carolina State University from 1942 until 1947. He held a number of administrative positions for the University over the scope of his career, as well as working in research and leadership positions for a number of national and international organizations concerned with world agriculture and agricultural education and research.

The buildings were located at the university's agricultural research farms in and around Raleigh, North Carolina. Ray M. Ritchie (1922-2004) was an agricultural engineer with twenty years of service to North Carolina Cooperative Extension. Ritchie was born in Charlotte Courthouse, Virginia, and he graduated from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech). He worked for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service from 1949 to 1969. Afterwards he ran a consulting business that designed farm buildings across the United States.

Included are conference papers, class lecture notes, talking points, reports, publication drafts, schedules, research and reference files, and article reprints. The collection contains materials on the following topics: low level radioactive waste management, buckling, radon, criticality, reactor analysis, kinetics, and migration. In various series are papers that Dr. Murray prepared in conjuction with North Carolina State University, various government agencies, and contract work he did with such companies as Bechtel. Raymond Leroy Murray was born on February 14, 1920, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and died on June 22, 2011, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He received a B.S. in education, 1940, and M.S. in physics and mathematics, 1941, from the University of Nebraska, and a Ph.D in physics from the University of Tennessee, 1950. That same year he joined the new nuclear engineering program at North Carolina State College (later University) as a physics professor. He was a key figure in establishing and operating the University's nuclear reactor, which was the first operated on a college campus. From 1963 to 1974 he headed NC State University's Department of Nuclear Engineering. He had many research interests and edited six editions of textbooks about nuclear energy. He worked as a consultant for companies interested in the history of nuclear energy, disasters of nuclear power plants, the development of the atomic bomb and how to safely deal with radioactive waste.

Raymond Cecil Sawyer (1925-2018) was a modernist architect, who practiced mainly in North Carolina. After graduating from N.C. State College's School of Design, Sawyer worked with Alfred Lublin in Norfolk, Virginia, and with Owen Smith and Jim Webb before returning to Raleigh to work with Terry Waugh, becoming an associate and then partner. When Waugh returned to the faculty of the NC State University School of Design, Sawyer formed his own private practice, designing homes and other buildings. Sawyer worked on numerous projects at NC State University, including the University Theater. He also worked on projects around North Carolina, designing the Historic Bath Visitor Center and the gunboat cradle for the CSS Neuse, a Confederate ship in Kinston, North Carolina. He designed projects for Campbell University, Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, and, as a member of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission, designed hospital units throughout the state. Sawyer retired from the Medical Care Commission in 1992.

The collection also contains an oral history interview of his son, David Tillson, in 2016. These materials encompass Tillson's work as a landscape architect, creating designs for small-scale residential locations, large-scale private subdivision, public parks, public housing projects, schools, churches, and hospitals. The collection represents Tillson's work throughout the southeastern United States, with the majority of the projects based in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region. The earlier materials from 1906 to 1928 demonstrate Tillson's beginnings in landscape architecture while gaining knowledge and experience in the field. The bulk of the collection covers Tillson's career as a practicing landscape architect between 1928 and 1969. The collection ranges from 1906 to 2016. Reginald D. Tillson was a landscape architect in High Point, North Carolina, who designed significant improvements to the built environment of High Point and other communities of the Piedmont Triad area. His early career focused on residential design work for the wealthy and upper-middle-class residents of High Point, which at the time was a prosperous center of the textile and furniture industries. In the 1950s and following decades, as North Carolina's population grew and planning and development trends evolved, Tillson's work grew in scale and complexity. He designed dozens of subdivisions and grounds for schools, churches, and hospitals. Overall, his career provides a unique view into planning and landscape architecture practice in the Southeast during decades of immense technological and social change.

The scrapbook includes certificates and diplomas from Parks' childhood, high school and college years. It also contains military records and numerous letters documenting his service as a pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. In addition to the scrapbook, there are about 25 photographs and a few other items, mostly from the period of Parks' military service. Reid Grover Parks (1923-1945) of Davidson County, North Carolina, served as a pilot in the United States Army Air Forces. Based in Foggia, Italy, from November 1944 to February 1945, he flew 28 missions as pilot of a B-24 Liberator bomber in the 325th Bomb Squadron.

MoreThe Reinard Harkema papers contain student recommendations, student photos, professional correspondence, and other professional papers associated with Harkema's tenure as professor of zoology at North Carolina State University, 1936 to 1978. Letters make up the bulk of the written collection, with notable correspondence between Harkema and David A. Becker, Alva Harris, Reginald D. Manwell, and Sturgis McKeever. Other material includes handbooks, programs, and proceedings from various North Carolina Academy of Science events and meetings; and a photograph album with pictures of Harkema's comparative anatomy classes between 1966 and 1975. Reinard Harkema (1910-1978) received his A.B. from Calvin College and his Ph.D. in 1935 from Duke University. Harkema taught at North Carolina State University from 1936 to 1978 as professor of zoology with a specialization in parasitology of wild animals. In addition to classroom teaching, he headed the pre-dental and pre-medical program in the Department of Zoology. During World War II he served in the United States Medical Corps as a parasitologist, and was a consultant to the Air Force following the war. In 1956, Dr. Harkema was elected president of the North Carolina Academy of Sciences, and in 1969 he received the NC State University Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor Award.

Mansmann, DVM, Ph.D., is the Director of Outreach for, and founding Director of, the Equine Health Program at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He authored several books including Equine Medicine and Surgery (3rd. ed.), and is an expert in equine podiatry, metabolic and respiratory treatment, rehabilitation, lameness prevention, and equine disaster medicine. Mansmann retired from NC State University in 2010 and reopened his private practice, working with chronic equine lameness and foot problems.
