The Mitchell Bush Papers contain research and teaching notes, presentations and materials, journals and publications, correspondence, field studies, field notes, research projects, training materials, anesthesia records, digital media such as floppy disks, CD-ROMS, zip disks, film strips, videotapes and 35mm slides documenting medical studies, surgeries and wildlife in national and international settings. Many of the files relate to Mitchell Bush's work with the National Zoological Park through the Smithsonian Institution. There are also separate series about his work with giraffes and his work with pandas. Almost the entire collection is related to Bush's work as a zoo veterinarian. Although the collection has been divided into series to assist with the research process, some topics may be covered across multiple series. For example, there is a series about the work that Bush did with pandas, but pandas may also appear in other series such as in the Subject Files or the Professional Organizations series. The majority of the materials in the collections date from 1950 to 2012. A few earlier items or reprints of earlier items are also included. Mitchell (Mitch) Bush is a leader in the field of modern zoological medicine. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, in 1965, and his career has been focused on pioneering studies and clinical practice in zoological and comparative medicine. He has worked for the National Zoological Park at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., since 1972, and beginning in 1994 he has served as the Chief of Veterinary Services at the Smithsonian Conservation & Research Center. He holds a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and is a visiting scientist at Kruger National Park in South Africa. Less

The Monticello Architectural Records contain architectural and archaeological data pertaining to the restoration and preservation of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Included are copies of publications; microfilm of field notes and drawings of Milton L. Grigg, restoration architect; photographs, slides and drawings of grounds, buildings, and furnishings. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation was incorporated in 1923. In that year, the Foundation purchased Monticello and strove to restore and preserve the historic home. Now known as the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the group operates the house, the gardens, the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies, a museum shop, the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants, and the Monticello Visitors Center. Monticello is located on 5,000 acres in Charlottesville, Virginia. Construction of Monticello began in 1769 and was completed in 1784. Less

The Murray Whisnant Papers contains correspondence, project files, slides and architectural drawings, as well as other records related to Murray Whisnant’s architectural projects and other designs dating from 1959 to 2017. Many of the projects Whisnant consulted on and designed were located in Charlotte, North Carolina. There are also sketches and plans of projects that were never completed. William Murray Whisnant was born and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated from Central High in 1950. He then attended North Carolina State University and studied within the School of Design for six years, where he was influenced by faculty member Eduardo Fernando Catalano and visiting architect Buckminster Fuller, as well as Dean Henry L. Kamphoefner. Upon graduation in 1956 Whisnant returned to Charlotte and joined the architectural firm of Sloan and Wheatley. In 1960, he became partner to Charles Wheatley. In 1974, Whisnant left to establish his own firm, Murray Whisnant Architects. In 1990 Murray Whisnant was awarded the Kamphoefner Prize by the AIA (American Institute of Architects) North Carolina chapter and the North Carolina Architectural Foundation. Murray Whisnant was active in the Charlotte community and even late in his life advocated for municipal projects, such as “Energy Park”, to enhance the lived spaces in the city where he was raised. The Murry O. Phillips Papers contain photographic slides, overhead transparencies, films strips, papers, scrapbooks, and ephemera related to Phillips lengthy career in agriculture and agricultural education in the state of North Carolina. Additionally there is material documenting M. O. Phillips's involvement with the development of the town of Coats, North Carolina, and material documenting Phillips's participation with the Future Farmers of America. The collection also includes an extensive slide collection created by Phillips that highlights the beauty of rural North Carolina, as well as personal slides, photographs,and papers. Murry O. Phillips (1913-2000) taught vocational agriculture in Harnett County, N.C., and then served as the Chief Curriculum Specialist and Supervisor for curriculum development in vocational education for the North Carolina Department of Public Education. Phillips was a pioneer in the use of audiovisual material in the classroom. The collection consists of mounted photographs and various artifacts brought together for the 2001 North Carolina State University exhibit "The Sodfather: A Friend of Agriculture in North Carolina" highlighting the career of James A. Graham (1921- ), who was North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture from 1964 until 2000. James A. Graham served as the North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture from 1964 until 2000. In this capacity, he emerged as a national figure, holding the presidency at various times of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture, and the Southern United States Trade Association. NC State University Libraries Research and Study Collection of Seed Catalogs contains publications from seed companies and garden stores, including Burpee's Seeds, Henry A. Dreer Seed Store, and D. M. Ferry and Co. These publications are seed catalogs and garden books. The date span is 1905 to 1975. Burpee's Seeds, Henry A. Dreer Company, and D.M. Ferry & Co. began publishing seed catalogs starting in the 19th Century. This collection contains copies of speeches, talks and papers related to Nash Nicks Winstead's work as a professor and administrator at North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1990. There are as well materials pertaining to his work with the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation, his work for the Institute of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, and his service in the United States Citizen-Ambassador Program. Included are printed copies of Winstead's personal writings: histories of both North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1995 and the North Carolina State University Provost's Office from 1955 to 1993; genealogical writings about his ancestors and hometown of Leasburg, North Carolina, which contains information dating from 1800 to 1960; and a volume documenting the Winstead family pets. Also found are Winstead's personal and professional correspondence from 1959 to 1994. Nash Nicks Winstead (1925-) held a number of academic and administrative positions at North Carolina State University between 1953 and 1990. He began his career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as a professor of plant pathology, and moved on to become assistant provost, vice provost, vice chancellor, and interim chancellor. As an administrator he played a large role in facilitating affirmative action measures, and was particularly involved in the integration of African American students into academic and social programs at North Carolina State University. Nathaniel C. Browder Collection of Cryptography Manuals and William Thomas Prestwood Diaries, includes twenty-eight original Prestwood diaries, most of which are encrypted, and enlarged copies of several of the diaries. Also included are a copy of The Enciphered Diary of William Thomas Prestwood 1808-1859, a description and transcription of the diaries produced by Nathaniel Browder, and two of Browder's World War II-era cryptography manuals. Nathaniel C. Browder worked as a cryptographer during and after World War II. After his retirement he worked on a number of genealogical and local history projects. Among these projects was the researching, deciphering, transcribing, and editing of William Thomas Prestwood's diaries. William Thomas Prestwood, a descendant of the influential Coker family, wrote a ciphered diary from 1808 until his death in 1859. Less

These records also document Dr. Robert A. Barnhart's involvement in the organization. The National Council for Textile Education (NCTE) was formed in 1931. The Nina Strömgren Allen Papers contain research and teaching documents, publications, photographs and slides, film, and extensive audiovisual materials pertaining to Allen's career and research in cellular biology. Dr. Allen was a professor at NC State beginning in 1995 and established the Molecular and Cellular Imaging Facility. She served as Director of the Plant Biology Graduate Program and also served as Chair of the Faculty Senate beginning in 2005 before retiring from NC State in 2008. In the 1970s she co-founded the Light Microscopy course at the Marine Biologicical Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachussetts and served as a Trustee on the Executive Committee. During this time she also co-developed the patent for Video Microscopy, greatly supporting cellular research. The Norman D. Anderson Collection on Ferris Wheels and Related Materials contains manuscript materials, newsletters, research files, photographs, postcards, and publications on Ferris wheels, amusement parks, and related subjects. The primary subject of the collection is the Ferris wheel. While the focus of the material is the Ferris wheel, there is also information relating to the history of amusement parks, amusement park preservation (or lack thereof), the amusement manufacturing industry and workers in the industry, as well as other material. Included are photographs and material about the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, as well as other World's Fairs. Dr. Norman D. Anderson is a Professor Emeritus of Science Education at North Carolina State University. In 1994 he retired after 31 years of teaching at North Carolina State University. He is a collector of materials on Ferris wheels and an ardent researcher of the Ferris wheel. Anderson authored the book Ferris Wheels: An Illustrated History, published in 1992, and he is coauthor of the 1983 children's book, Ferris Wheels as well as several science books for children. The Norman Robert Bell papers consist of materials for electrical engineering courses at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University), speeches, presentations, and reprints of journal articles. Article titles include System Design of a Small General Purpose Digital Computer (1966), Symmetric Circuits and the Concept of Logical Potential (1967), A Map Method for the Teaching of the Fundamental Concepts of Compound-Input Logic Circuits (1968), and Fluidic Realization of Threshold Logic (1968). Syracuse, N.Y., native Norman Robert Bell (1918 - 1994) received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University in 1939 and a master's degree in engineering from Cornell University in 1945. North Carolina 4-H Development Fund Records contain annual reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial statements, and budget memos related to the North Carolina 4-H development Fund. It also includes an electronic file of Larry and Joyce Bass 4-H Horticultural Awards Endowment Brochure. The NC 4-H Development Fund was created to acquire funds that support 4-H Youth Development Programs in North Carolina and increase its effectiveness and efficiency. It acquires funds and gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. 4-H, in turn, is a community of some 261,000 young people across America. In these programs, kids and teens are engaged in hands-on projects related to agriculture, health, science, and civic education while receiving guidance from adult mentors. Participants learn public speaking, decision-making, teamwork, communication, and other important skills. Not only do they develop new skills, they also learn how to become proactive leaders.
