The North Carolina State University, Division of Student Affairs, Reserve Officers' Training Corps Records, 1904-2002, contains scrapbooks, memoranda, pamphlets, correspondences, newsletters, instruction books, newsclippings, and other administrative files relating to the activities and events of the campus ROTC program’s Air Force, Army, and Navy branches. They also include records of N. C. State’s Air Science and Tactics Department and the Military Science and Tactics Department. The North Carolina State University’s Reserve Officer’s Training Corp (ROTC) is a group of four campus programs, the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps which train officers of the United State armed forces in basic military and officer training. The North Carolina State University, Division of Student Affairs, Student Media Authority Records contain budget and financial statements, contracts, correspondence, minutes, staff applications, layout and design information, and publications. There is also a large amount of photographic materials, including CDs, DVDs, photographic prints, negatives, contact sheets, and slides, most of which are from student photographers. The collection includes records of the Student Media Board, 1928-2008, the Agromeck office from 1909 to 2011, the Technician office from 1939 to 2011, the WKNC Radio Station from 1922 to 2006, the Windhover from 1928 to 2013, the Nubian Message from 2007 to 2009, and a small number of records, 1926-2022, from other publications. The Student Media Authority at North Carolina State University oversees creation of campus student publications at North Carolina State University, which include a yearbook, a daily newspaper, literary magazine, and African American student newspaper. It also oversees the student radio station, WKNC, and student television station, Wolf TV. The Publications Board was formed at North Carolina State College in or before 1933 to oversee creation of student publications. By 1937, it included representatives from student publications such as the Agromeck, Technician, Wataugan, Southern Engineer, and Agriculturist. By the late 1940s, it also included representatives from the student radio station WVWP. In the following decades, the organization continued to oversee the finances and leadership of student publications at North Carolina State University. It underwent various name changes, becoming known as the Student Media Board by the mid-2000s. As of 2010, Student Media is part of the Division of Student Affairs and is based in Witherspoon Student Center. It includes 220 paid and volunteer student positions. Less

Records include files from the Associate Vice Chancellor's office, Alumni Association, Athletics, Financial Aid, and Student Government. The Division of Student Affairs at North Carolina State University provided programs and services for students and the larger community to enhance quality of life, facilitate intellectual, ethical and personal growth, and create a culture which engenders respect for human diversity. Through these activities the Division of Student Affairs support student learning with the principle of “Students First.” In 2011, the Division of Student Affairs merged with the Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs to become the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA). The Faculty Senate General Records contain files of all administrative aspects of the Faculty Senate. The bulk of the records come from different committees and include materials on honorary degrees, the search for a new chancellor, Board of Trustees, Chancellor's Liasion, elections, budget, and student affairs. Also included are materials on the selection of outstanding teachers and Watauga Medal recepients, retention of African American students, Founders Day events, and other administrative functions of the Faculty Senate. The first Faculty Council meetings were held in 1923, and the Council remained in place as an ad hoc advisory board to the then College President. Formerly known as the Faculty Council and the Advisory Committee of the General Faculty, the Faculty Senate provides advice to the Chancellor and, through the Chancellor, to the Board of Trustees. In this role, the Faculty Senate discusses with or provides information to any administrator with authority and responsibility for a decision, recommends policies to any administrator who is authorized to make a decision, and makes policy recommendations to the Chancellor, Provost and Vice Chancellors. The Foundations Accounting & Investments department reports to the Treasurer's Office and is responsible for investment management, accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, board communications, benchmarking, University associated-entity reporting, audits, tax returns, and other help and guidance to campus units to assist them in managing their foundation and endowment resources. The General Faculty Meeting Records are primarily comprised of the minutes from meetings held by the President, later Chancellor, and faculty at North Carolina State University. The minutes cover all aspects of running the university, and include discussions of the curriculum, organization of the academic calendar, finances, requirements for admittance and withdrawal, scheduling for the school year, and issues between students and professors, among many other topics. Also included in the collection are general faculty bylaws and a small amount of correspondence and resolutions. Materials date from 1889 to 1980. Alexander Holladay, J.R. Chamberlain, W.F. Massey, W.A. Withers, D.H. Hill Jr., and J.H. Kinealy comprised the entire administration of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts when the faculty met for the first time on Oct. 13, 1889. Alexander Quarles Holladay was the first chief executive of the (then) college. In 1889, Holladay applied to the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts for the position of professor of English, but the Board of Trustees appointed him as the first college president instead. President Holladay and the faculty met regularly to discuss all matters of running the college, including any issues with the student body, which was only 50 students at the time. Holladay served the institution until failing health forced his retirement in 1899. He died in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1909. Less

The North Carolina State University Libraries Annual Reports contain annual reports from the main library, its departments, and the university's branch libraries. There are some gaps in the files, and these records are unprocessed. The first library at North Carolina State University was established in 1889 in a room in Holladay Hall. In 1925 a new purpose-built library building was constructed (now Brooks Hall). In 1954 the current D.H. Hill Library building was opened (originally just the east wing of the current structure). The library space was expanded in 1971 by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second (or "south") bookstack tower. In 2013 the award-winning James B. Hunt Library opened on the university’s Centennial Campus. In 2016, NC State University Libraries won the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, bestowed by the Institute for Museum and Library Service. The medal was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to Director Susan Nutter during a ceremony. Susan Nutter retired from the Libraries in 2017, after an esteemed 30 year tenure. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University, Libraries, Harrye B. Lyons Design Library, 1945-1998, include clippings, publications, memorandum, and various files retained by the library documenting activities of the Harrye B. Lyons Design Library and the School of Design, and design research. Clippings from various newspapers and professional publications relate to lives and works of deans, faculty, and alumni of the School of Design. The majority of newspapers are local, including the News and Observer and the Raleigh Times, but national papers, such as the New York Times, are also included. Other clippings relate broadly to the Harrye B. Lyons Library, School of Design, and North Carolina State University including associated students and staff. Acquisition information, annual reports, project reports, policies, meetings notes, and reference files of the Harrye B. Lyons Library are included. Brochures, fliers, and memoranda relating to the students, staff, faculty, and events of the School of Design are also included. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University, College of Design, orginally School of Design, and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. The Design Library is located in Brooks Hall, now part of the College of Design. Brooks Hall was originally built to be the library on campus, D. H. Hill Jr. Library. The Design Library inhabits the space that was the original reading room of D. H. Hill Jr. Library. It was named for Mrs. Harrye B. Lyons, who headed the Design Library from 1947 to 1968. Less

The North Carolina State University, Memorabilia Collection contains primarily three-dimensional objects related to the history of North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina State College and North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts). Prominent topics represented by these objects include alumni, professors, and chancellors, student military service, campus socieities and clubs, the Athletics program (in particular the 1983 NCAA Mens Basketball Championship), and the 1987 N.C. The annual reports of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service include annual and biennial reports from the Agricultural Research Service (many under its former designation of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station), and reports documenting "Accomplishments in Tobacco Research in North Carolina." Materials range in date from 1879 to 2006. The North Carolina Agricultural Research Service began as the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station in 1877. The Experiment Station, the second of its kind in the United States, was established to conduct tests on commercial fertilizers and other agricultural products, as well as to perform experimental research on agricultural nutrition and growth. The records of the North Carolina State University, Construction Services Records contain correspondence, plans, drawings, and other documentation related to the construction, renovation, and repair of buildings and other structures on the North Carolina State University campus. In 1960 North Carolina State University established what was formerly known as the Campus Planning Office, which updated the 1958 plan. The Campus Planning Office was renamed the Design and Construction Services Department, located under the authority of the Facilities Division in the Office of Finance and Administration. As of 2020, the name of the unit is Construction Services (https://facilities.ofa.ncsu.edu/about-us/all-facilities-departments/fs/construction-services/, accessed 4/29/2020). This collection contains blueprints, drawings, notes, sketches, memoranda, surveys, master plans, and photographic slides, prints, and negatives relating to projects and initiatives undertaken by the Office of Campus Planning and Strategic Investment (formerly the Office of the University Architect). The majority of materials correspond to Edwin F. Harris’s tenure as Campus Planning Consultant, beginning in 1966, and later as director of Facilities Planning Division, a title which eventually became University Architect. However, the collection includes materials that pre-date Harris, as well as more recent additions to the collection. The University Archives contains architectural plans, drawings, and other materials for university buildings; however, federal and state law restricts access to certain types of documents in these categories. The Special Collections Research Center of the NC State University Libraries will handle access requests for those materials on a case-by-case basis, with the intention of providing as much access as possible to researchers. To support the university’s mission and goals, the Office of Campus Planning and Strategic Investment leads campus master planning, capital planning, space planning, campus design, and facilities data management efforts, which include the building floor plans, campus maps, GIS, and plan library.
