The Richard Porter Papers, 1975-1995, undated, includes syllabi, laboratory notes, and correspondence related to materials science reseach and teaching; photographic materials include slides and glass plate negatives. The collection also includes a number of material samples--especially guitar strings. Richard L. Porter (1946-1999) was affiliated with North Carolina State University for 18 years as a teacher, administrator, and researcher. He started as a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. At the time of his unexpected death on July 22, 1999, he was the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs of the College of Engineering. Porter was instrumental in the development of the Engineering Undesignated program. Dr. Porter’s son, Nicolas Richard Porter, established the Richard L. Porter Memorial Scholarship in 2000. Less

This collection contains several photographs of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts 1904 graduating class, as well as collected materials documenting the organization of that class's reunions between 1929 and 1974. Risden Patterson Reece was a member of the Class of 1904 at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (North Carolina State University) and worked for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Throughout his life, Reece was active in the North Carolina State Alumni Association and helped organize reunions for the Class of 1904 through the mid-1970s. Less

This collection is comprised entirely of GEDRT conference notes and records from 1992-2000; the conferences were held throughout the world. GEDRT (Groupe Europeen d'echange d'experiences sur la Direction de la Recherche Textile) is an international textiles organization. The organization describes itself as "an exclusive club or association the membership of which consists of some 40 plus individually elected personal members chosen among European professors and directors of universities and research institutions in textiles....The aim of the association is to exchange views on subjects difficult to deal with within international congresses and which preoccupy primarily university professors and leaders of research organisations in running their internal policies as well as the external cooperation with other institutions especially industry." This collection contains files on Rice's teaching in the Department of Engineering at North Carolina State College (later University), as well as papers relating to his involvement with various branches of the United States Armed Forces. Types of materials include paper files, blueprints, and photographs. Robert Barton Rice was administrator, teacher, and engineering consultant. During World War II, Rice directed the Naval Diesel School, a designated North Carolina State College training facility for national defense. While teaching at North Carolina State College (later University) in 1950, Rice and two partners formed Enginerring Development Associates, a corporation offering services in design, construction, supervision, and consultation in many branches of engineering and architecture. Rice was a member of the faculty at NC State for more than 25 years. Less

The Robert Burns Architectural Drawings include nine architectural drawings by Robert Paschal Burns (1933-2005) that were transfered from the College of Design to Special Collections through the assistance of Dean Marvin Malecha. They include a set of 4 drawings of an international airport from 1957 that Burns had submitted for the 44th Paris Prize in Architecture. He won the competition and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. To support his international travel, Burns had been awarded the Lloyd Warren Fellowship in 1957 while he was a student at North Carolina State College. The collection also includes 3 undated drawings for an apartment hotel development in Raleigh and 2 undated drawings for a Highway Island Development (these last two are likely by Burns, but his name is not on the drawings). This collection also contains slides from Burns' classes, studio and architectural travel. Professor Robert Paschal Burns (1933-2005), a native of Roxboro, North Carolina, was the head of the Architecture Department at NC State University's School of Design from 1967 to 1974 and from 1983 to 1991. He was selected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1979 and was awarded the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence in 1996. The Robert C. Browning Papers contains material from the professional engineering work of Robert C. Browning, and his father, R. Getty Browning. Robert C. Browning's materials contain project files, drawings, project photographs, engineering instruments related to his work as a consulting engineer. The project files are a sampling of Browning's engineering projects from the 1950s until the mid-1990s. His projects are mainly located at hospitals, colleges, and warehouse facilities. The types of documents found most often in Browning's project files are notes, sketches, working drawings, specifications, correspondence, budgeting and costs, engineering standards, and equipment catalogs. The equipment catalogs were put out by the manufacturers of machines and industrial equipment that Browning either installed or considered installing in project locations. Browning's collection also contains a box of personal information. This box includes diplomas, conferences attended, papers given, and Browning's resume at various points in his career. Also included is a profile of the Robert C. Browning Consulting Firm and a projects list. Engineering drawings in the Robert Browning Collection are shop drawings or blue prints. Some are drawn in the original pencil, others are copies. Copies of drawings often contain new revisions and added notes. The drawings illustrate plans for plumbing, electrical, lighting, structural, floor plans, exhaust, air conditioning, and heating. The Robert C. Browning Papers also include are materials from R. Getty Browning's work as Chief Locating Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (previously named Highway Commission). Included in the collection are project files, biographical papers, and artifacts. In the project files are materials relating to Getty Browning's work in the planning and construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. These files contain correspondence, notes, maps, sketches, photographs and publicity materials. Biographical papers include newspaper clippings, photographs and publicity created by or about Getty Browning before and after his death. Also included are papers related to his work in the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The artifacts in the collection are engineering and surveying equipment used by Getty Browning. Robert C. Browning (1919-2007) and his father, R. Getty Browning (1884-1966), worked as engineers in North Carolina. Robert C. Browning earned a degree in consulting engineering from North Carolina State University in 1941. After serving in the Army as an engineer during World War II, Browning came back to the United States and started his own consulting engineering firm. As a consulting engineer, Robert C. Browning worked on the construction and renovations of schools, hospitals, industrial plants, and commercial buildings from 1953 until the mid-1990s. Projects at these locations included air conditioning, plumbing, heating, electrical, communications, storm drainage, water and sewer, grading, site planning, structural, central heating plants, steam distribution systems, highway right-of way acquisition, claims investigations, and highway location. R. Getty Browning worked as the Chief Locating Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation from 1925 to 1958. He is best known for planning the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina starting in 1934. Less

The Robert Eugene Messick Papers, 1966-1970, contains documents written by Robert Eugene Messick. Included is his undergraduate thesis on a unified graphic system for the various campus documents and bulletins at North Carolina State College. The collection also contains two reports published by Messick. The first is entitled "The Gray Area Report" and describes his account of the events and issues surrounding his early release as Theater Assistant Technician with Thompson Theater. The second, entitled "Death of a Union," contends that students had lost all voice in the operation of the College Union at North Carolina State University by 1969. The final item is a text regarding the state of the College Union that Messick prepared for a meeting before the Executive Committee on the Board of Trustees of North Carolina State University. Robert Eugene Messick, born in 1941, attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1959 to 1966. In May 1966 he received a bachelor's degree in product design, and then worked as a product design instructor and as a technician and designer in campus theatre productions at North Carolina State University. Davis Papers includes correspondence, high school summer workshop and North Carolina State University course materials, and a large series of article reprints that relate to the processing of glass and ceramics. The Robert F. Stoops Papers, 1946-1950, 1963, contain class notes, assignments, tests, and textbooks from Stoops's time as an undergraduate ceramic engineering major at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), as well a lab report written by one of Stoops's students at N.C. State. Robert F. Stoops (1921-2005) received his B.A. in ceramic engineering from N.C. State and his M.A. and Ph.D. in ceramic engineering from Ohio State University. He joined the faculty at N.C. State in 1958 and was appointed director of engineering research in 1968. He also served as the director of the N.C. State Minerals Research Laboratory. Less

The papers of Robert M. Fearn, professor emeritus of economics at North Carolina State University, include correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings, and reports relating to his roles as chair of Faculty Senate, Athletics Council member, and economics professor. Information related to athletic affairs, faculty senate, Nelson Hall, U.S. Department of Labor project, and the Barney Huang legal case are included in the collection. Robert M. This collection contains photographic negatives of Holladay Hall, the Court of North Carolina and the 1911 Building on the North Carolina State University campus, as well as Pullen Park in Raleigh. These images are dated 1936. There are also more recent prints made from the negatives, and a CD with digital scans of the images. The CD also contains images of Hamlet, North Carolina, and an unidentified group of people, but original negatives and prints were not included with the donation of this collection. This collection contains one black-and-white photograph (5 inches x 3.5 inches) depicting the house lived in by Bob and Bettie Buhler in the Vetville community on the NC State College campus. The reverse of the photograph has a hand-drawn floorplan of the house. An additional email printout from the Buhler's daughter (Deborah B. Lincoln) provides further description about the house. Robert McCollum "Bob" Buhler was a student at NC State College (later named NC State University) in the early 1950s. Beginning in 1950, he and his wife Bettie lived in a small single-unit house (18 foot x 18 foot) in the Vetville community on the college campus. The house was disassembled and moved to Alamance County, NC, after Bob Buhler graduated in 1952. He was later a land surveyor in North Carolina and Georgia. Less

This collection includes documents and hosiery samples from the Kellwood Company of Siler City, North Carolina. Robert McKinley, who worked at the Kellwood Company for ten years, was in possession of the documents found in this collection. However, many documents, patents, agreements, and financial records originally belonged to Robert M. Matthews. The collection contains both business-related documents as well as documents, photos, slides, and samples pertaining specifically to the garments themselves. There are many articles within the collection. The bulk of the material comes from the 1980s about twenty years after the company was established. Robert McKinley began by working for Sears as a buyer in New York and Chicago. McKinley worked at Kellwood Company in Siler City, North Carolina for ten years. Robert M. Matthews worked for Robert McKinley. During his career at Kellwood Company, he was able to acquire two patents regarding hosiery and panty-hose creation and material during early 1970s.Kellwood Company was formed in 1961 due to the merger of Sears and other companies. Kellwood company still exists today and is acquired by a Hong Kong-based investor group. Less

This collection contains photographs taken by Dr. Robert N. Elliott, Jr. A professional photographer by training, Dr. Elliott took the majority of these photographs during his tenure as a history professor at North Carolina State University. The photographs span from 1965 through 1985 and the bulk of the photographs were taken in the 1970s. The photographs are primarily outdoor shots in North Carolina, but images from Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina are included. Some themes of the photographic collection include the historic sections of Raleigh and Old Salem, North Carolina; South Carolina cemeteries; beaches and waterscapes; rural landscapes; outdoor winter landscapes; North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina campuses; plants and flowers; and trees. While the collection is primarily made up of photographs, it also contains some of Elliott's drawings of rural landscapes. Dr. Robert Neal Elliott, Jr., was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1915. He was trained as a professional photographer by M. F. Dunbar. During World War II, he utilized his photography skills as a camera operator for the United States Army Air Force’s First Motion Picture Division, based in Hollywood, California. After the war, Elliott earned a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and a doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he specialized in North Carolina history. He taught at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, from 1953 to 1956, then at North Carolina State University from 1956 until his retirement in 1981. He is the author of The Raleigh Register, 1799-1863. He maintained an active interest in photography throughout his life and on at least one occasion exhibited his photographs at North Carolina State University. Elliott died in 2003. Less

Tilman document his career as assistant and associate professor at Yale University, professor of political science and dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and other professional activities related to Southeast Asian studies. A small part of the collection, mostly slides and photographs, deals with Tilman’s personal life. The collection includes correspondence; course material, such as syllabi and lecture notes; administrative files; files relating to various professional activities; manuscripts; publications; material from a research project about Filipino identity; reference files; personal files including those related to his wife Jo Tilman; audiovisual material such as video cassettes, tape reels, slides and photographs; artifacts; and computer-related material. Robert O. Tilman (1929-1987) was professor of political science, 1971-1987; dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 1971-1984; and founder of the North Carolina Japan Center at North Carolina State University. The Robert Phillip Upchurch Collection contains personal and professional papers of plant scientist Robert Phillip Upchurch. This collection contains annual reports, 1953-1965, written by Upchurch for a project at the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, The Development of Principles and Practices for the Control of Weeds in Cotton, Peanuts, Soybeans, Forage Crops, Turf and for the Control of Nutsedge, Johnson Grass and Woody Plants, as well as class notes, 1941-1949, from Upchurch's years as a student in crop science and plant physiology. Robert P. Upchurch's personal military records, 1948-1967, are included in the collection, as are the Upchurch Bulletin, 1980-2006, and Englandia, 1996-1999, family history quarterlies edited and published by Robert Phillip Upchurch. Also included are publications and other materials of the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST), and the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH). Robert Phillip Upchurch, 1928-2020, was born in Wake County, North Carolina, on February 9, 1928. He graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) with a B.S. in Crop Science in 1948. He received a master's degree in 1949 and in 1953 was awarded a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of California, Davis. Upchurch was a member of the faculty at North Carolina State College from 1949 to 1965. From 1955 to 1957 Upchurch served in the United States Air Force with the rank of second lieutenant. From 1965 through 1975 he worked for the Monsanto Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri. From 1975 to 1990 Upchurch was a professor and head of the Plant Sciences Department at the University of Arizona. Less

The Robert S. Curtis Papers contain manuscript and research materials with related correspondence for Curtis's eleven volume History of Livestock in North Carolina (1956). Robert Seth Curtis (1881-1962) graduated from Iowa State College in 1905 and worked on the Animal Industry staff at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1906 to 1928. He served as a livestock specialist with the State Department of Agriculture from 1942 until his retirement in 1951. Less

The Robert Sargent Papers, 1961-2002, include teaching materials, publications, research files, presentations, and data tapes documenting his work as a Professor at Syracuse University and on behalf of the United States Air Force. There are also materials, including conference programs, documenting Sargent’s involvement with the Winter Simulation Conference and other professional organizations and meetings. A list of books related to simulation donated to NC State University Libraries by Robert Sargent and individually cataloged may be found here. Robert G. Sargent studied simulation methodology and modeling at the University of Michigan. After completing his Ph.D. in 1966, he joined the faculty at Syracuse University, where he taught simulation until retiring in the late 1990s.
