The Alexander Isley Papers, 1967-2020, contains materials related to Alexander Isley’s childhood, schooling, and career as a graphic designer at M&Co., Spy magazine, and Alexander Isley, Inc. These materials include design sketches and drafts, final design samples, financial records, correspondence, press clippings, school records and coursework, memorabilia, and a website. Alexander Isley (1961- ) is a graphic designer from Durham, North Carolina, who, as of 2019, is creative director of Alexander Isley, Inc. He holds a degree in Environmental Design from the School of Design at North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union in New York City. From 1984 to 1986 he was the senior designer at the New York City design firm M&Co., then in 1987 became the first full-time art director of Spy, the New York-based satirical monthly magazine. He left Spy in 1988 to start his own design firm, Alexander Isley Inc. Isley has received several design awards, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Medal in 2014. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Library of Congress. Less

The Animal Rights and Animal Welfare Publications records contains magazines, journals, newsletters, newspapers, pamphlets, testimonials from federal hearings, books, annual reports, articles, comic books, leaflets, videotapes, catalogs, a screenplay, and an audio CD. Most publications were collected by the Animal Rights Network for their relevance in the treatment of animals. This includes a broad range of publishers and organizations, from animal rights groups, animal shelters, wildlife sanctuaries, laboratory animal providers, animal liberation groups, hunting enthusiasts, political activists, fur trappers, pet dealers, animal breeders, vegetarians, laboratories that experiment on animals, educators, societies for the protection of animals, and pet lovers. Most of these publications were received from the Animal Rights Network; publications from other organizations and individuals have been added to the collection. In 1979, several Connecticut-based animal rights activists withdrew from Friends of Animals, Inc., to found the Animal Rights Network (ARN). ARN joined forces with the animal rights magazine Agenda, and together they worked to unite local, national, and international animal rights groups to achieve common goals. In 2001, the board of directors determined that the role of ARN as a movement building and networking tool was no longer necessary, and formed a new organization called the Institute for Animals and Society (IAS) "to advance animal advocacy issues in public policy development by conducting scholarly research and analysis, providing education and training, and fostering cooperation with other social justice movements and interests." IAS merged with the Society and Animals Forum to create the Animals and Society Institute in 2005. Less

The records of the Animal Welfare Institute include administrative files of both the AWI and the Society for Animal Protective Legislation (SAPL), subject files on animals the organization works to protect, files on legislation that SAPL has been involved with, files on the work of other animal rights groups, subject files on regional activities, photographs, publications, books, audiovisual materials, and archived web content. Materials of the organization range in date from its founding in the early 1950s to the early 2020's; other materials in the collection date back to the 1930s. The Animal Welfare Institute was created in 1951 as a non-profit, charitable organization focused on reducing the amount of suffering inflicted on animals by humans. The AWI continues to be active in these endeavors today, working to reduce animal cruelty in captive and domestic situations--including farming and laboratories--and also working to protect the rights of animals living in the wild, both on land and in the water. The Azalea Society of America records contain administrative information, chapter information, correspondence to and from the Society, membership information, various publications, and research files. Although items in the collection date back to 1928, the bulk of information falls between 1979 and 2013. This is an ongoing collection with publications added once available. Created in 1979, the Azalea Society of America's goals include the promotion of the knowledge of and interest in azaleas and proper description and registration of azaleas. These goals are met through conducting studies of azaleas and providing a forum for azalea enthusiasts to discuss hybridizing, propagation, and culture of azaleas. Less

The Bernard Unti Book and Ephemera Collection on Animal Studies contains books, pamphlets, ephemera, and material culture objects tied to the history of the kindness-to-animals ethic, organized animal protection, vegetarianism, anti-vivisection and related concerns. The majority of the collection is comprised of books with many dating to the 1800s and early 20th Century. Bernard Unti, Ph.D., is an animal rights and welfare advocate who served as Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) from 2004 to 2021. Unti was then hired as Senior Principal Strategist in Communications for the HSUS. Unti is the author of Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History of The Humane Society of the United States (2004), which covers the history of the HSUS from its creation to the early twentieth century. Unti has also written a number of essays and articles on animal cruelty as a historical and contemporary issue. In addition to working for the HSUS and Humane Society International, he worked at the Animal Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) in various positions from 1985 to 1992, including the position of Executive Director. Bruce Weir (1943- ) is one of the world’s foremost researchers on statistical analysis of DNA for forensic, human health, and agricultural applications. Weir earned his PhD from North Carolina State University in 1968 under C. Clark Cockerham and served as a professor of statistics and genetics at NCSU from 1976-2006. The collection contains Weir's professional correspondence as well as research diagrams and materials related to Weir's tenure at NCSU. Less

The Carolyn R. Miller papers consist of correspondence, articles, essays, and commentary related to the publication of Miller's "Genre as Social Action." The correspondence demonstrates the struggles and obstructions in publishing her landmark study that was developed from her dissertation in the early 1980s. Today, this article is one of the most-cited articles ever published in the Quarterly Journal of Speech and is considered a monumental interdisciplinary explanatory construct. Also, included in this collection are letters and articles in response to Miller's opinion essay for the Raleigh News & Observer. Documents related to opinion pieces published in the Raleigh News & Observer are about cultural shifts in the teaching of English and writing during the 1980s and their influences on faculty in NC State’s Department of English. The collection also includes Miller's general professional records from across her career, including correspondence, conference materials, and her 2003 portfolio. Carolyn Rae Miller received her B.A. (honors) and M.A. in English from the Pennsylvania State University in 1967 and 1968. After several years of working as an instructor at North Carolina State University, she attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1980 to earn her Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric. Soon after her graduation, she joined the faculty at North Carolina State University and served in different key roles in the Department of English. During her years at NC State, Miller helped with the development of new graduate courses and programs. She is a founding director of NC State’s Ph.D. in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media, established in 2005, and of the M.S. in Technical Communication, started in 1988. In her interview with Master's in Communications, she mentions that NC State's Department of English was a traditional one focusing on the study of literary art. She established the graduate degree programs not only to teach the things she was interested in and trained to investigate, but also to justify courses and attract students with similar interests. Dr. Miller retired as SAS Institute Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric and Technical Communication in June 2015. The Charles M. Ellertson Research and Study Collection on Typography contains books, serials (including a run of The Association of American University Presses Book and Jacket Show), booklets and leaflets on graphic design, typography, fonts, and graphic designers, and some papers related to Ellertson's work in typography. The collection also includes a set of Merganthaler Linotype negatives from Ellertson's early career. Materials range in date from 1956 to 2022. Charles M. Ellertson (1945-2022), a typographer and typesetter, co-founded Tseng Information Systems in Durham, NC in 1980 and was vice-president of the firm until its closure in 2021, setting type for university presses throughout the U.S. Using Fontographer and later FontLab, Charles created special characters and diacritics for non-Romanized languages; his work enabled the publication of Native American research and literature. Cyma Rubin is an award-winning director, producer, writer and curator. She is currently the president of Business of Entertainment Inc., in New York. Rubin formerly founded an interior and industrial design company, Cyma Ackerman, Inc., and a theatrical production company, Pyxidium, Ltd. She has actively supported numerous cultural programs and the arts. Rubin graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) with a degree in textile management. The Cyma Rubin Papers, 1942-2016, document many of the projects Rubin has produced during her career, including interior design work; hosting events for the United Nations and for the American Symphony Orchestra; producing Broadway shows, movies, multimedia productions, television shows, and cultural productions for Nippon TV; and curating photographic exhibits and books. Included are correspondence, legal documents, photographs, programs, press releases, press clippings, scripts, promotional merchandise, research material, audiovisual material, and costumes related to theatrical and film productions and other projects. The Derby Lane Greyhound Track Records contain photographs, scrapbooks, clippings, programs, operational records, audiovisual materials, artifacts, and various publications. These materials encompass the full range of the organization's racing operations, promotions, and live events. Additionally, the records reflect the organization's particular focus on promotion through various media outlets such as news reports, radio promos, print advertisements, and branded materials. Derby Lane, also known as St. Petersburg Kennel Club, was one of the oldest greyhound tracks in the United States. To establish the racetrack, a group of local business owners purchased a portion of land from T. L. Weaver, a lumber entrepreneur, near St. Petersburg, FL. After constructing the racetrack, financial hardship fell on the original owners, and the ownership reverted to Weaver's lumber company. The inaugural race was held on January 3, 1925. Since then, almost a century, Derby Lane entertained people, welcomed celebrities, and cheered champion greyhounds. Over time, Debry Lane went through technological innovations and modernized the industry. It included the Derby Lane Poker Room offering various gaming options. In addition to greyhound racing, Derby lane hosted a variety of entertainment including concerts, beer tastings, and on-location shoots for major motion pictures. In 2018, Florida Amendment 13 banned wagering on greyhound racing, putting an end to greyhound racing in the state. Derby Lane held its last races in December 2020. Less

The Edward T. Funkhouser Photographs consists of color photographs, taken by Funkhouser, depicting the campus of North Carolina State University and nearby parts of Raleigh, North Carolina, 2001-2015. Also included are a few images of Fayetteville, NC, sites (Gen. Shelton statue, Veterans Park, Bragg Boulevard), 2014. Most of the photographs are digital images in JPG format. Edward Truman Funkhouser (1946- ) has been a professor of speech and communication at NC State University since 1977. He has also served as an administrator in the university’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a B.S. from Madison College, an M.A. from Memphis State University, and a Ph.D. from Ohio University. He has been the public address announcer for NC State football and women's basketball games. His interest in photography has resulted in the creation of thousands of images of the NC State campus; Raleigh, North Carolina; and other locales. Less

The Eric Hinesley Research Collection on Atlantic White Cedar contains digital files related to Dr. Hinesley's research interests in Atlantic White Cedar. Included are photograph files in tiff and jpeg format with related captions attached as a word document. Materials range in date from 2002 to 2022. Eric Hinesley was a horticulture professor at NC State University from 1978 to 2010. During his time as a faculty member, he conducted full-time research related to Christmas tree production in North Carolina. He also conducted studies on wetland restoration with an emphasis on Atlantic White Cedar and Bald Cypress. Dr. Hinesley received a bachelor's and master's degree in Forestry at NC State University in 1971 and 1973, respectively, and he received a Ph.D. in Forestry and Forest Soils at Mississippi State University in 1978. This collection contains large-format photocopies of architectural drawings of the S. P. Alexander residence in Forest Hills, a residential district in Durham, North Carolina; and architectural blueprints of a residence in Hope Valley, a suburb of Durham, North Carolina. George Watts Carr, Sr. (1893-1975) was a Durham, N.C., architect. After heading the Durham office of architects Northup and O'Brien from 1926 to 1927, he had his own practice in the same city. He was primarily responsible for projects that his firm produced in the Durham area, especially in the Forest Hills neighborhood. Carr received honor awards from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, for which he served as vice president 1936-1937. Less

The Graduate Student Oral Histories on North Carolina Hog Farming include audio files of interviews with farmers, neighbors nearby the farms, and environmentalists about hog farming in Eastern North Carolina. These oral histories were produced for HI 533 Theory and Practice of Oral History, taught by Dr. Gwynn Thayer. The class was held in spring of 2023 and the interviews date to April and May 2023. The purpose of the Graduate Student Oral Histories on North Carolina Hog Farming was to analyze and consider different perspectives regarding hog farming in Eastern North Carolina. These oral histories capture the debate over whether different techniques for treating hog waste are acceptable to the environment and to public health. Farmers of hog farms, neighbors of these farms, and members of the Waterkeeper Alliance were interviewed. Less

Greenways Incorporated is a North Carolina based landscape architectural firm that provides specialized planning and design services to clients in the public and private sector. Greenways Incorporated was established in August 1986, by founder and president Charles A. Flink. The firm has designed greenways, open spaces, and pedestrian trails. Projects from this firm have been implemented in more than 135 communities, in 35 states, and internationally in Argentina, Canada, Japan, and the U. S. Virgin Islands. The company has received an American Society of Landscape Architecture Chapter Award for Excellence for five separate projects in five different states. Less

The Harrie T. Lindeberg Drawings of the Ellsleigh Estate contain plans, elevations, sections, and details of elements such as staircases, windows, and fireplaces. The collection also includes specifications and some correspondence between Lindeberg and the original owner Robert Lee Ellis and with interior designer Ernesta Beaux. The bulk of the materials range in date from 1925 to 1929. A small amount of materials date from 2002 and 2020. Harrie (H.T.) Lindeberg (1879-1959) was a New York architect who designed country estates for clients from New York to Illinois to Texas to North Carolina. He worked with McKim, Mead and White early in his career and later opened his own firm with his associate Lewis Colt Albro. He designed houses mostly in Beaux Arts or Georgian revival styles. Less

The Herb Schaal Landscape Architecture Papers contain sketches, drawings, reports, photographs, digital media, and correspondence from Schaal's career as a landscape architect and principal at EDAW, now AECOM. The collection particularly highlights Schaal's work on large-scale children's gardens, public botanical gardens, planning and design for university campuses, and analysis and design for key infrastructure projects such as highways and energy sites and corridors. Herb Schaal, a native of the San Francisco Bay area in California, is founding principal of the Fort Collins office of Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and Williams (EDAW, now AECOM), a landscape architecture firm. Schaal received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona and his Master of Landscape Architecture from State University of New York at Syracuse. He worked in the North Carolina State University Department of Landscape Architecture under Richard Moore, then chair of the department and previously Schaal's professor at Cal Poly Pomona. Schaal's work has included urban design studies; site planning and design for corporate facilities and campuses; highway and corridor work; and re-vegetation of difficult sites and disturbed areas. His specialty is public gardens, including educational gardens for children and contemplative gardens for healthcare facilities.
