The M. Edmund Aycock Papers contain programs, membership lists, educational resources, publications, correspondence and other materials related to the history of North Carolina's 4-H program. As a North Carolina youth, M. Edmund Aycock (1912–2009) belonged to 4-H clubs during the 1920s. He later studied at the University of North Carolina (1929-1933) and North Carolina State University (1933-1936). After working as a county Cooperative Extension agent, he worked at Wachovia Bank and also served as a chairman of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. Aycock was actively involved in the 4-H Youth Development program throughout his life and founded the Edmund & Elizabeth Aycock Scholarship. This scholarship awards $1000 to a high school senior who participates in 4-H. For his 80 years of service to North Carolina 4-H, he was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. He was also awarded NC State University's Watauga Medal in 1984. Less

The MacMillan and MacMillan Architectural Papers, 1919, 1950-2010, document the professional activities of Dan and Frank MacMillan and their architectural firm. The collection consists of architectural drawings with various iterations of designs, blueprints, construction documents, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and related materials. MacMillan and MacMillan’s projects include mostly private residences, with a small number of subdivision developments. Also included in the collection are drawings of landscape architecture projects by Richard C. Bell, done in collaboration with MacMillan and MacMillan projects. There is also a series of photographs from the period (1950-1952) in which the Dorton Arena was under construction; Dan MacMillan worked on the Dorton Arena as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction. Dan (1921- ) and Frank (d. 1991) MacMillan were born in Fayetteville, North Carolina and were principals in the MacMillan and MacMillan architectural firm. Dan MacMillan graduated from North Carolina State University in 1948 and worked for several years with the architect Jim Webb and then as a project engineer for Muirhead Construction on Raleigh’s Dorton Arena. In 1952 Dan MacMillan founded his firm, Dan MacMillan Architect and Associates in Fayetteville. After his brother, Frank, received his architecture license in the early 1950s Dan partnered with him and the firm was renamed MacMillan and MacMillan. Frank MacMillan died in 1991. The MacMillans had also partnered with other architects during their career, including Brian Shawcroft. Less

The collection contains three mimeographed textbooks used by Malcolm Eugene Campbell when he was a student at New Bedford Textile School and later as an instructor at Clemson College. The books cover various textiles related topics including jacquard design, knitting, yarn manufacturing, and carding and spinning calculations. Hand drawn and colored sketches and patterns, and fabric samples are included. Also included are several notes and letters found within the textbooks. Malcolm Eugene Campbell (1902-1978) graduated from the New Bedford Textiles School in 1922 and taught textiles engineering at Clemson College (later University) before joining the United States Department of Agriculture as a cotton research technologist. He was appointed Dean of the School of Textiles at North Carolina State College (later University) in 1943 and retired in 1967. Less

The Mann Family Papers contain correspondence, church bulletins, scrapbooks, newsclippings, magazine articles, photographs, brochures, programs, artifacts, and other materials regarding Carroll Mann Sr., Carroll Mann Jr., and Carroll Mann III. There are also documents on Mann Hall and the Memorial Bell Tower on the North Carolina State University campus. The Mann family has had a long association with North Carolina State University. Carroll Lamb Mann, Sr. (1877-1961), graduated from the college in 1899, and was on the civil engineering faculty there from 1901 to 1948. Carroll Lamb Mann, Jr. (1911-1999), graduated from NC State in 1932, and he returned to NC State as a professor of civil engineering in 1953. He later chaired the college's Committee on Buildings and Grounds, directed the Facilities Planning Division, and led the college safety division. Carroll Lamb Mann III (1934-2013) graduated from NC State in 1959 with a BS in zoology. He was a practicing neurosurgeon in Raleigh, NC, for 26 years, and he was an avid fisher and hunter. Less

Marguerite Doe Ravenscroft Scrapbook contains materials documenting the activities of Marguerite Ravenscroft dedicated to the animal welfare cause. Specifically, the scrapbook includes photos, letters, and receipts acknowledging her contribution to animal welfare organizations. There are also materials covering animal shelters in other parts of the world established by Ravenscroft. Marguerite Doe Ravenscroft (1890-1972) was a Montecito (CA)-based philanthropist who was engaged in animal welfare efforts throughout her life. Less

This collection contains material relating to the scholastic life of Martha Bailey Hawkins Andrews at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1925 to 1933. It also includes material that documents the history of North Carolina State University. Materials are in the format of class notes, course syllabi, course notebooks, newspaper clippings, and correspondence as well as photographs. The Martha Scotford Research and Study Collection on Graphic Design contains materials from 1896 through 2010 including design works and ephemera, publications, files documenting Scotford’s projects, and design-related reference materials relating to graphic design, book design and typography. Martha Scotford was a professor of graphic design in the College of Design at North Carolina State University until 2013; she began as a visiting lecturer in Visual Design in 1981. She was raised in New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont, and received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Oberlin College in 1966 and both her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Graphic Design from Yale University in 1970. She has published numerous books related to design. In 2001, she spent five months in India as a Fulbright lecturer. In 2007 she received NC State University's Distance Education and Learning Technologies Gertrude Cox Special Merit Award. Martha Scotford donated this collection to the University to be used as a research and study collection for design and the history of design. Her research interests emphasize women in design and feminist theory. Less

The Mary Yarbrough Papers (1825-2012) contains a variety of materials including correspondence, photographs, publications, music books, news clippings, photocopies, and artifacts, most of which document Yarbrough's life and career, as well as her family history. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough (1904-1984) was one of the first women to receive a graduate degree (M.S. in chemistry, 1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Mary Yarbrough served on the faculty of Meredith College for many years (1929-1972). In 1941 she received a Ph.D. and Phi Beta Kappa key at Duke University. At Meredith College she headed the chemistry and physics department, and she became an assistant director of the cooperative education program. Less

This collection contains annual reports from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA). These annual reports are from the years 1994-2005. The collection also contains publications published from 1822-2018. This collection was created by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA or MSPCA-Angell). The MSPCA is a non-profit organization that protects animals, relieves their suffering, advances their health and welfare, and prevents cruelty. The MSPCA was founded in 1868. The Maurice Hugh Farrier Papers includes personal and professional correspondence, entomology research materials, and a reprint collection of articles and works by internationally acclaimed scientists writing on mites and other insects. The collection chiefly documents Farrier's research and professional activities during his tenure as a professor of Entomology and Forestry in the departments of Entomology and Forestry at North Carolina State University. One of Farrier's main subjects of research was the Veigaiidae (Acarina). In March 1957 he published A Revision of the Veigaiidae (Acarina), which is included in this collection, as is Mites of the Superfamily Parasitoidea (Acarina: Mesostigmata) Associated with Dendroctonus and Ips (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) (December, 1969). Farrier also wrote numerous articles for scholarly journals, news columns in various North Carolina newspapers, and other works. The bulk of the collection consists of a comprehensive compilation of original publications, reprints, and annotated photocopies of articles on mites written by scientists from all over the world. Farrier and his student Michael K. Hennessey used these articles to compile and publish Soil-Inhabiting and Free-Living Mesostigmata (Acari-Parasitiformes) from North America: an Annotated Checklist and Bibliography and Index (1993), a taxonomic index on mites. Farrier and Hennessey also co-authored Systematic Revision of Thirty Species of Free-Living, Soil-Inhabiting Gamasine Mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) of North America (1988) and Mites of the Family Parasitidae (Acari: Mesostigmata) Inhabiting Forest Soils of North and South Carolina (1989). Maurice Hugh Farrier received a B.S. in Zoology and Entomology in 1948 and a Masters degree in Entomology in 1950, both from Iowa State College. Farrier subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Entomology from North Carolina State College (University) in 1955. That same year, he was appointed Assistant Professor at North Carolina State in the Department of Entomology. In 1960, Farrier was promoted to Associate Professor of Entomology, and in 1961, he became Associate Professor of Entomology and Forestry. In 1971, Farrier was promoted to full professor. The Max Desfor Photographs and Papers contain photographs taken by Max Desfor while he was employed with the Associated Press from 1940 to 1968. There are also newspaper clippings, personal correspondence, business correspondence and other files dating from 1942 to 2008 as well as numerous photographs and negatives dating from 1936 to 2008. Also included in the collection are many photographs and negatives dated from 1936 to 2008 documenting Desfor's experiences in Korea, Japan, India and many other places, foreign and domestic. Some are photographs Desfor took for AP jobs while others are personal. The collection also contains Desfor's Pulitzer Prize-winning war photo, "Flight of Refugees Across Wrecked Bridge in Korea," taken in 1950, of Korean refugees fleeing along the twisted girders of a bombed bridge. The collection also contains videocassettes and CDs ranging in dates from 1985 to 2008, although most of them are undated, as well as slides from 1969 and 1972. Max Desfor was born in New York City on November 8, 1913. He studied at Brooklyn College in New York. He started his career at the Associated Press in 1933 as a darkroom assistant. In 1938, Desfor became staff photographer at the Associated Press bureau in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1939 he joined the Associated Press staff in Washington, D.C. In 1942 he was promoted to photo editor and in 1944 he was promoted to war correspondent and assigned to photograph Admiral Nimitz's command in the Pacific Ocean area. Less

The Michael K. Stoskopf Papers, 1934-2020, primarily contain files related to Stoskopf's research and teaching and his involvement in professional organizations, particularly the American College of Zoological Medicine and North Carolina State University Center For Marine Sciences and Technology. There are also blueprints from his work with the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. Digital photographs as well as publications related to veterinary and zoological medicine, aquaculture, wildlife and the enrivonment are also included. While the materials span the time period 1934-2014, most documents date from the 1980s and the 1990s. Michael K. Stoskopf has worked at North Carolina State University since 1989. As of 2020, he directs the Environmental Medicine Consortium at N.C. State and participates actively in the inter-college Fisheries and Wildlife and Marine Sciences programs. He is professor of wildlife and aquatic health in the Department of Clinical Sciences with appointments in Forestry, Biomedical Engineering, and Toxicology. He is the Zoological Focus Leader and teaches extensively in core, selective and elective courses in the DVM curriculum and graduate courses in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. Less

The Michael Overcash Papers contain materials, 1928-2007, documenting Overcash's career as a North Carolina State University faculty member in chemical, biological and agricultural engineering, who studied industrial pollution prevention, waste minimization, life cycle inventory research, and sustainability. Included are reports, research files, computer data and disks, correspondence, and field studies. Also included are scientific literature, catalogs, journals, laboratory notebooks, and published papers. Michael R. Overcash was assistant professor, 1972-1976, and associate professor, 1976-1981, of chemical engineering and biological and agricultural enginnering, and professor, 1981-2007, of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. Since 2007, Overcash has been a vsiting scholar in industrial and manufaturing engineering at Wichita State University. Overcash has developed an in-depth national research program in two distinctive areas--life cycle inventory research and sustainability research. He has published books on techniques for industrial pollution prevention, organics in municipal sludge land treatment systems, livestock waste management systems, and related subjects. Less

The Milton M. Leonard papers, 1934-1990, contains Dr. Milton Moot Leonard's research files and research papers written by him documenting the contributions he made during his years as a veterinarian in Asheville, North Carolina. Also included are medical pamplets, catalogs, animal x-rays, business correspondences, animal vendor catalogs, NC State University vet school catalogs, and black and white photos. Dr. Milton Moot Leonard (1893-1984) opened a veterinary practice in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1914. Active in veterinary circles, Leonard became the president of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA) in 1917 and served in every office of the association. In 1957 Dr. Leonard was named Veterinarian of the Year by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA). In 1978, he was awarded the Distinguished Veterinarian Award by the NCVMA. Leonard practiced for more than twenty-six years and attended twenty-six national conventions of veterinarians. He died in October 1984 at the age of ninety-one in Asheville, North Carolina. Less
