Biographical/historical note

Marguerite Doe Ravenscroft (1890-1972) was a Montecito (CA)-based philanthropist who was engaged in animal welfare efforts throughout her life.

Marguerite Doe Ravenscroft was born in San Francisco to financier John Sanborn Doe and Eleanor H. Doe. After the death of her father, she inherited the bulk of his estate. In the following years, Ravenscroft and her mother divided their time between living in San Francisco and Europe. From 1908 through 1909, Ravenscroft attended Miss Nixon’s School in Florence, Italy. This was a school for American girls aiming to make them familiar with the great sights of Italy teaching them the manners and customs of high society. After returning to the United States, Ravenscroft and her mother hosted many social events. She purchased five acres of land in Montecito Valley and built a house and garage aiming to make Montecito her home. She was welcomed into local social circles, and her social engagement and activities began to include various cultural and charitable events.

During World War I, Ravenscroft was involved in relief work. Specifically, she worked at the Russian bazaar for the War Relief Committee of Montecito. At the end of 1916, Ravenscroft joined the Red Cross ambulance service in France and provided assistance to women and children.

After Ravenscroft returned home from Europe, she was soon elected to the board of the Santa Barbara Humane Society. In May 1922, she even served as a county humane officer for a few months. Throughout her life she continued to work for the benefit of animals. She commissioned George Washington Smith to design animal hospitals in San Francisco (1924), Sacramento, and Long Beach (1927). She established animal shelters all over the world including Egypt, Ethiopia, India, and Indonesia. Ravenscroft continued to serve on the advisory board of the Santa Barbara Humane Society. Not only did she make donations for animal cause, but she also opened a thrift shop to benefit animals.

Marguerite Ravenscroft died in 1970. According to her will, her estate should be used to fund the Marguerite Doe Foundation for the assistance of animals. Her generosity and devotion significantly contributed to the animal welfare movement.
