The Charles Burgess Williams Papers, 1895 - 1953, contain items relating to Williams' time at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. During his tenure as a student, researcher, and professor, the institution was renamed North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). The collection contains personal documents, professional materials documenting his contributions to the study of agriculture, published and unpublished biographical pieces, and materials relating to the history of North Carolina State University. Charles Burgess Williams (1871 - 1947) was a scientist and an educator. He received a B.A. and M.A. in agriculture from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The Gaston Vance Jones Photograph of the North Carolina State College Thalerian German Club includes an original photograph that was reproduced on page 220 of the 1918 Agromeck. Gaston Vance Jones was a student at North Carolina State College (now University) from 1918 until about 1920. He was in Leazar Literary Society, Pi Kappa Alpha, Tompkins Textile Society, and the Thalerian (also spelled Thalarian) German Club pictured in the photograph. Jones was from Newark, New Jersey. The James Fontaine Papers contain documents (mostly correspondence) related to the activity of James Fontaine. Also included is a certificate issued by the Order of Saint Patrick of North Carolina State College, according to which James Fontaine was dubbed "Knight of St. Patrick." The collection also includes a diploma certifying that James Fontaine was a member of the Mu Beta Psi Honorary Musical Fraternity at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University). James Spotswood Fontaine (1888-1943) was Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Assistant Director of the Engineering Experiment Station at North Carolina State College (now University). He was educated at North Carolina State College and earned a Bachelor's of Engineering in Electrical Engineering in 1914. From 1915 through 1925, Fontaine worked for several companies and federal agencies including General Electric and the US Navy. From 1924 through 1925, Fontaine was in the graduate program in Civil and Highway Engineering and one of the first three graduate students to hold a research fellowship at North Carolina State College. In 1925-1930, he was the first and the only Research Assistant in the Engineering Experiment Station where he built and derived valuable results from the North Carolina Tire Tester; deduced valuable results from the operation of the North Carolina Road Test Truck and did much of the work which resulted in such bulletins as Highway Grades and Motor Vehicle Costs, of which he was co-author. From 1930 he advanced to the position of Assistant Professor of Mathematics, followed by Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Assistant Director of the Engineering Experiment Station. Fontaine was a loyal member of the North Carolina Society of Engineers and the Raleigh Engineers Club, and ex-President of the latter. Less

Wimberley, Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology Head. Materials range in date from 1862 to 2010. Sociology courses were first offered at State College (now NC State University) in 1920 with the arrival of Dr. Carl Cleveland Taylor and graduate student Carle Clark Zimmerman. Both would later become important figures in the field of sociology. Rural sociology, which sought to improve the quality of life of rural communities, was a focus of the early program. After several iterations, the Department merged with the Department of Anthropology in 1966 to become the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The records of the State College Woman's Club (later the North Carolina State University Woman's Club) document the club's history and activities from 1919 to 2012 and include the club constitution and by-laws, annual reports, yearbooks, historical scrapbooks, photographs, membership lists, committee reports, newsletters, correspondence, agendas, minutes, expense and accounting information, and newspaper clippings documenting club, member, and university activities. Cookbooks produced by the group, Favorite Foods From Faculty Kitchens (1974) and Foods That Rate at NC State (1983), are also included. Spouses of many notable NC State professors and administrators were involved in shaping and leading the State College Woman's Club, including Mrs. Zeno Metcalf, Mrs. W. C. Riddick, and Mrs. B. W. Wells. The North Carolina State College Woman's Club (later the North Carolina State University Woman's Club) was formed in 1919 to "unite the women connected with the college in a common interest for the promotion of welfare and advancement of State College" (later N.C. State University). The club also sought to provide opportunities for faculty members and their families to become better acquainted with each other, striving to promote a sense of community for those involved in the university. Originally membership was open to all women connected with the university, though, especially in the early years, the membership focus was on faculty wives. Club activities were primarily social, especially in the early years. Less
