The Cathy Sterling Papers include correspondence, texts of speeches, reports, clippings, photographs, and artifacts relating to Cathy Sterling's tenure, 1970-1971, as Student Body President at North Carolina State University. Many of the materials focus on Sterling's status as North Carolina State University's first female student body president, as well as her involvement in protest movements against the Vietnam War, which included organizing a campus Peace Retreat. The materials range in date from 1966 to 1999, with the bulk of the materials being from 1970 to 1972. Cathy (now known as Kate) Sterling served as the first female student body president at North Carolina State University, 1970-1971. She conducted a successful write-in campaign with a platform that focused on students’ rights and the administration’s use of student fees. In the Spring of 1970, Sterling married Gene Messick, a graduate of the School (now College) of Design at NC State and director of the multimedia program at Stewart Theatre. Soon after, Messick accepted a teaching position at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Sterling moved to Ithaca to join him after the conclusion of her term as Student Body President. However, Sterling remained active in NC State’s Student Government activities throughout the 1971-1972 academic year. The records of the Council Tool Company document the history and operation of the North Carolina-based company from its founding by John Pickett Council in 1886 to the end of the twentieth century. The collection contains the company’s correspondence, financial records, and materials relating to personnel, plant operations, and merchandise. This collection also contains papers of the Council family spanning several generations, beginning in the early 1800s and with a few items from the 18th century. Correspondence, invoices, order letters, bills of lading, and related materials relate to the company’s operations including manufacturing, sales, transportation, information requests, and clientele. Financial records include accounting records, tax records, correspondence with accountants, records from the fire of October 20, 1970, and records relating to stocks. Accounting records include account books (ledgers), day books, trial balances, annual reviews of the company, and payroll ledgers. Office Files contain various information about the Council Tool Company and its operations, including correspondence, personnel files, catalogs and product information, machinery and equipment, inventories, notes and memoranda, and information about labor unions, insurance, and board meetings. Also included with the business records are files on the pulpwood industry, test hacks with accompanying reports, and maps and drawings. The family papers contain correspondence, financial records, and legal documents belonging to family members, including K. K. Council, John Pickett Council, K. Clyde Council, Edward L. Council, and Louise Council and a poem by Kinchin B. Council. Deeds and land grants, as well as correspondence about estates and property, constitute a substantial portion of the family papers. Council Tool Company is a family owned and operated business based in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina. The company was founded in 1886 by John Pickett Council, a turpentine producer and farmer in Bladen County, North Carolina. The company’s earliest product line featured tools used in the naval stores industry. When the naval stores industry began to wane, the company reacted by diversifying its product line. The company grew during the early decades of the twentieth century, surviving the Great Depression, two World Wars, and a devastating fire that destroyed much of the manufacturing plant. As of 2015, the company's full line of professional products included axes, picks, mauls, mattocks, striking tools, shrubbing tools, digging tools, wood-splitting tools, forged bars, C-clamps and a variety of specialty tools. The George Smart Papers, 1959-2004, document the professional activities of George McCollum Smart and his architectural firm. The collection is arranged into five series: drawings, project files, professional papers, electronic files, and photographic materials. Drawings include blueprints, sketches, and working drawings, representing a variety of projects undertaken by Smart and his firm. Project files contain correspondence, financial records, contracts and agreements, building and land surveys, design narratives and specifications, material samples, and notes relating to Smart’s design, construction, and renovation projects. Professional papers primarily include reference material relating to the design of educational and church facilities, construction materials, standards, and codes. Photographic materials include prints, negatives, and slides depicting the design, construction, and completion of various projects, including several churches and schools. George McCollum Smart (1931-2003) was an architect based in Raleigh, North Carolina from the early 1960s to 2002. Smart was born in South Carolina and attended high school in Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Randolph-Macon College in 1952 and a Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State College in 1959. Smart received his certification to practice architecture from the North Carolina Board of Architecture in 1961. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects. Prior to opening his own architectural firm, Smart was employed by Holloway and Reeves, Haskins and Rice, and Walter Burgess. From approximately 1964 on Smart presided over his own firm and had a series of partners including Charles Woodall, Max Isley, Troy Herring, and Mete Gurel. Smart designed and renovated many buildings including churches, schools, and post offices, primarily in North Carolina. His firm was also active in the areas of asbestos removal and fireproofing of public buildings. Smart retired from practice in 2002 and died in 2003. Less

The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. The papers, 1957-1988, of Macon Smith, an architect in Raleigh, North Carolina, contain an autobiography, a timeline of architectural projects, and architectural plans and drawings for various projects. The autobiography contains both personal information relating to Smith's early life, education, and family, as well as professional accomplishments and photographs of his work. Macon Smith (February 24, 1919-October 10, 2008) was an architect with the firm F. Carter Williams in Raleigh, North Carolina. Smith studied architectural engineering at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), graduating in 1941. He also attended Naval Aviation Engineering School in New York and served in World War II. Smith joined the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1949, and during the 1960s, he was elected Treasurer, Vice-president, and President. The Mary R. Boone Papers contain newspaper clippings, photographs, photocopies of newspaper clippings, articles, and cartoons relating to the proposed ratification of the Equal Rights amendment and Mary R. Barnes Boone's participation in a hunger strike in support of ratification. While the material is primarily focused on the hunger strike, documents relating to Boone's experiences as a feminist and supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment are also contained in the collection, including her correspondence with the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints regarding her views. An audioreel of Sonia Johnson's speech at North Carolina State University, and January 1983 edition of Life Magazine: The Year in Pictures are included in this collection, along with various ephemera related to the aforementioned topics. Mary R. Boone was a student at North Carolina State University in 1982, and she belonged to a group that brought Sonia Johnson to campus to speak. Johnson had just authored the book titled From Housewife to Heretic, an account of Johnson's personal journey as a previous member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a supporter of the Equal Rights Ammendment. Johnson's speech inspired Boone (then known as Mary Barnes) to join with six other women in a hunger strike to support the Equal Rights Amendment, then being considered by the states for ratification. Though the Equal Rights Ammendment failed to pass, the hunger strike generated much publicity and interest, even inciting sympathy fasts among supporters of the protest group. Less

Collection contains alumni recollections, photographs, and ephemeral materials documenting the student experience, World War II service, and other aspects of the lives of various alumni of North Carolina State University. The North Carolina State University Alumni/Student Collection was created by the Special Collections Research Center in 1996 to centralize future material relating to activities of University students. It was intended for this collection to have the value of a representative sample of these activities. Nance papers contain correspondence, articles, technical reports and reprints, manuals, periodicals, video, and other materials documenting Nance's teaching, research, and professional service, 1950s-2004, in the field of computer simulation. Richard E. Nance received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1962 from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), followed by a Master of Science in 1964. Nance completed his Ph.D. at Purdue in 1968 and soon established himself as a founding leader in the field of computer simulation research. In addition, he taught at Southern Methodist University and Virginia Tech, served as a researcher for the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and participated in a variety of professional activities. Less
