About This Workshop

School psychology is a field dedicated to supporting children and families through their educational process. Yet we are finding a significant deficit in supporting immigrant families in special education in our public schools. What are some barriers and solutions to resolve these inequities? Come to this workshop to learn what psychology looks like in other parts of the world and how the cogeneration of knowledge can help us better support children and families. Guidelines for home-school collaboration from a culturally humble perspective will be presented.

 

Biography: Helen Oluokun is a doctoral candidate in the School psychology program. Originally from Nigeria, her upbringing in another country drives her passion for equity in education. Her research centers on home-school collaboration, primarily supporting immigrant families in acclimating to the Special Education process in Wake County Public Schools. Helen is also a graduate researcher at the Center for Family and Community Engagement (CFACE) on campus. Her current project focuses on supporting the state’s system in supporting their Community Child Protection Teams (CCPT).
