About This Workshop

Do people still “get jiggy with it?” If not, we can at least get jiggy with git. While git is ostensibly a software versioning tool, its use extends to any non-binary format, e.g., LaTex, markdown documents, etc. This makes it a powerful tool outside of software or web development. This introductory workshop will explain what git is good for, how it works, what GitHub is, how to set up repositories and keep them synced, and how and when to use git branches. If you aren’t familiar with some of the terms in the previous sentence, never fear: we’ll cover that too! We will also see how GitHub is integrated with tools like MATLAB® and R, as well as how to use it with non-traditional formats like LaTex.

Biography: Selene Schmittling is a PhD student in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at NCSU. She researches computational techniques, including machine learning, to identify molecular regulatory relationships that exist in plants under stress. She has used GitHub in R, MATLAB®, Python (through PyCharm) and with LaTex documents to collaborate on homework. She is also Curriculum Director for Engineering Opportunity, a non-profit group whose mission is to promote equity in education and provide accessible educational enrichment experiences.
