Instructor Ahmet Erbas discusses bicycle maintenance with attendees at his last workshop, held in November

About This Workshop

This Peer Scholars workshop and maintenance clinic is open to anyone who would like to learn more about their bicycle, is interested in trying advanced riding, or simply needs some help with maintenance and repairs. Attendees are welcome to bring their bike in for the session; this will be held in the small study area just inside and to the left of the Hillsborough Street entrance to D. H. Hill Jr. Library. Don't worry about staying the entire time, if you just need to stop by and get some quick tips, that's totally fine!

The workshop will start by covering basics of bicycle maintenance including chain maintenance/removal and installation, flat tires and more advanced topics such as brake maintenance and operation. The instructor will bring in one of his bicycles and basic tools for demonstration purposes. Next we will go over different disciplines of bicycling, and how bicycles have evolved over the years and the reasoning behind these changes. We will cover weight distribution and techniques, body positioning as it relates to going over obstacles and cornering (off and on-road, over different surfaces). We will talk about easy ways to adjust bikes for better ergonomics and fit. Finally we will talk about hydration and miscellaneous tools and gear. Wrap up will include cycling safety and culture, how to find help and groups online, how to find trails and biking paths including local avenues and when travelling. This workshop is intended to be interactive and participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout.
