These workshops are offered throughout the year but are also available by request for your lab group, course, department meeting, extension office, or seminar series! We have provided the length of each workshop as a guideline, but can also mix & match these topics for a customized session.

AI Tools for Research
Covers multiple AI tools, highlights their strengths & weaknesses for different aspects of the research process, and discusses the ethical considerations of using AI tools. Hands-on: Mix of demonstration & practice.
Time: 45 minutes
Citation Management with Zotero: Bibliographies Made Easy!
In this hands-on workshop, participants learn how to manage their citation with Zotero. They will create Zotero accounts, download the software & plugins, practice importing documents, and learn how to create in-text citations and bibliographies. (Instruction on alternative citation management softwares may be available upon request.)

Designing and Presenting Research Posters
Offers strategies for planning, designing, and presenting a research poster. Covers how to design a visually appealing, accessible, and impactful poster, and how to use the poster as a tool to share research.
Time: 45 minutes
Getting Started with Patent Research
In this workshop, participants learn what a patent is and how to find them through prior art searching. Topics covered will include best practices for searching patent databases as well as an overview of NC State resources.

Getting Started with Scholarly Research
Covers the process of finding information for a research paper, including selecting a research topic, searching the literature to find appropriate sources, reading a journal article, and managing your sources.

Introduction to Open Access Publishing
Outlines the current OA publishing models in the academic journal world, reasons for publishing OA, and highlights our various OA agreements. Also has a short section on OA book publishing, including OERs.

Misinformation & Source Evaluation
Explains the mechanisms that lead to the creation and dissemination of mis- and dis-information. Covers the current state of the “infodemic,” how to identify misinformation and bias, and how to evaluate unfamiliar sources for credibility.
Time: 30 - 45 minutes
Research Fraud and Ethics
Discusses research fraud, research retractions, and questionable citation patterns. Covers how participants can evaluate these problems, read for credibility, and strategies for changing the system.

Systematic Methods for Literature Reviews
Covers the different types of review articles, including systematic reviews. Participants will learn how to determine what type of review is right for them, how to use systematic methods, and where to go for more help.

What You Need To Know About Deceptive Publishers
Explains the landscape of predatory publishers and conferences. Gives participants tools to evaluate venues for sharing their research.
