The NC State University Libraries now provides access to several collections of newspapers, primary accounts, government documents, and more, highlighting American history from the 1600s to the present.
Included in the new databases is Everyday Life & Women in America, a collection on social, cultural, and popular US women’s history from 1800 to 1920. Themes include medicine, popular fiction, work, and racism. The collection also includes interactive teaching aids and essays from subject specialists to situate the collections in historical context.
An additional unique addition to the collection is Popular Medicine in America, 1800-1900. From advertising ephemera to anatomy guides, these materials document the history of ‘popular’ remedies and trends such as phrenology, herbal medicine and hydrotherapy.
The library also offers a free subscription to the digital version of the New York Times, as well as its archives, for all NC State affiliates. Instructions on sign-up are detailed here.
